What is modest dressing?

Way deep down in Dixie, in the extreme southern part of the United States you will find me living in Louisiana. I live not just in Louisiana, but in Southern Louisiana, about 2 driving hours from the Gulf of Mexico. If it doesn’t rain, heat indexes will be 105 degrees today. If you ask me whether or not I wear capris and shirts with sleeves or if I wear shorts and sleeveless shirts in the ballpark or while cutting my lawn, I will pick shorts and sleeveless shirts every time. Not short shorts or raunchy sleevless shirts, but descent shorts and sleeveless shirts. Our climate is very humid and it is extremely hot here. As for my daughter, she does wear flip flops while serving at mass, not those “loud” types though, conservative, as we do live in Southern Louisiana and I must be persistent about the heat down here. As for wording on clothing, I don’t allow my daughter to wear anything like “hotty”, “sexy”, etc., but if it says “Angel”, which she truly is, I allow it. As for the baggy clothes that boys wear, I think it is an abomination of nature and should be banned. Not too long ago, a legistator from Metairie, Louisiana tried to get a law passed on “baggy pants”, but he was the laughing stock of the state. I personally was in support of it.

Stay cool:thumbsup:

You have to admit, though, guys’ clothing is not nearly as big of a problem as girls’ clothing. I’ll have to agree with the parents that what the girls at my school is absolutely ridiculous, and sometimes downright slutty.

Modesty is determined by culture and what will cause others to sin…

In some cultures public nudity is not considered inmodest in some it is…

I remember at the Vatican anyone wearing shorts or sleveless tops could not get in St. Peter’s. I kind of adopted that code for my public dress. I cover my shoulders and knees and everything in between. As for tightness, I remember years ago reading what someone had said: Clothes should be “tight enough to show you are a woman, loose enough to show you are a lady.” That stuck with me.

I love a capri pants! Best for summer. ~Marci

Way too few choices in your poll. Any dress which leaves nothing to the imagination is immodest. For example a skin tight “slinky” blouse with no bra which shows “all” is immodest. Wearing your pants so low you risk being arrested for indecent exposure is immodest.

Of course! I agree 100%. My outing with the Catholic women included a women who wore a form fitting skirt. I’d think that my capris were more modest.

I basically wanted to know if people thought women could wear tasteful shorts. Three people voted for dresses, but they have not given reasons. I’d love to hear an argument for wearing dresses, because I have seen women do it with much grace. I’ve also seen a more sloppy look that I don’t think is better than neat capris or tasteful shorts. St. Gianna wore pants and loved a nice looking outfit. I can’t find a quote, but there are pictures of her in pants on the website www.gianna.org

I can’t imagine that those boys in pants practically hanging off can be comfortable. If my clothes fit like that I’d be constantly tugging at them to keep them up! It would drive me nuts.

What is the funniest is seeing them as they walk down the sidewalk in my neighborhood. Half of the young boys are constantly pulling and tugging at their pants, to keep them up. The other half don’t even seem to realize their “boxers” are showing. You can’t help but notice the patterns, quite often you can’t help but laugh. If one stops to ask for water, I ask when they got out of prison. LOL They have no earthly idea that prison clothes are the background for their styling. (as they call it) I do gently explain it. (I am thankful they do wear undies!)

Puppylove, I supported that ban on the baggy boys clothing too. 🙂 I wear shorts, short sleeve shirts, and running shoes, normally at this time of year. Sometimes, I like wearing a loose dress, one of those that touch you on the shoulders only, loose and baggy but with sleeves and down to almost the ankles. You must be where it wasn’t raining most of the day today. LOL

God bless you and yours

Capa828, when I posted it wasn’t raining yet, but it started just after 2 p.m. yesterday. This morning, it was raining with sunshine. I hope to get down to the coast to do some fishing by September or October. I love it there. Its so tranquil and peaceful. God’s country.

God bless you all!😉

Tom: We got three inches here in the River Parishes so I know you guys gotta be under water and you must be wearing shorts and a t-shirt for sure. 😃

My son likes his shorts longer but fortunately not baggy. We were at the doctor’s office the other day and a young man about 14 was walking out and literally, his pants fell down. I probably shouldn’t have laughed as hard as I did but… He pulled them up so fast my son missed it. Wish he’d have seen it to be reminded of how silly the look is just in case he had ideas it was cool.
I’ve seen the same thing, and I have laughed out loud as well. I figure if they want to look so ridiculous, I might as well let them know they are succeeding! 🙂

Now that you compare the baggy clothes to prison outfits, I can see the same “prison shuffle” that boys do when trying to walk in pants with the crotch down to the knees.
I saw one boy trying to run to catch a bus that was about to pull off. It was the most hilarious thing I’ve ever seen. He was hoppping/skipping/shuffling trying to hold his pants up while carrying some packages (this was just outside a mall), all the while trying to keep his shoes on, too, because they were the over-sized sneakers with no laces (also a carry-over from the prisons)!! :rotfl:

Now I did just buy my first pair of pants with a lower waist (by no means immodest) and I finally do understand my daughter’s arguement that high waisted pants are uncomfortable. (but I would never tell her that!!)
Pants with a low waist are fine; I don’t see anything wrong with them as long as the waistband is not at the level just above the crotch. If they are comfortable and modest, go for it! I personally cannot wear low waisted clothing (I don’t have the body for it), but I can see where they would be pretty comfortable.
Have a great day,
Judy

I know what you mean; I see it all the time, too. As for them not realizing their boxers are showing, though— they most certainly do! It is part of the “style”! That is exactly why they choose boxers with patterns-- because everyone can see them. In fact, if you notice, often they will wear regular underwear, the boxers, AND the baggy pants. Frankly, it looks as though they are wearing diapers, what with so many layers.

Have a great day,
Judy

Finally the fashion industry has heard our cries! The styles for this fall are longer skirts, less skin showing and a more “woman” look. The Britney want to bes will be out of style this year. No more navals hanging out. 👍

I did NOT VOTE simply because none of those answers are me nor are they sufficent to get an honest and faithful answer to this important question. If you want a good answer to this question, go to the EWTN Website, and give a listen to yesterday’s homily. It will burn your ears up!

God bless you for asking. 👍

Peace and all good,

I keep coming back to the same time honored answer… if you were called from church and told that Christ was sitting in a tent inside your church and that he would like to meet you… come in one hour and you will have one hour to spend with him personally one on one…

I think if truthfully answered, very few would be in less than their Sunday best…

Well, the tabernacle is the word for tent in the time of Christ, and he is there inside your church waiting for you to visit him… if you believe as a Catholic is “supposed” to believe… nuff said… 👍

Spaceghost - I think you might have missed that this thread isn’t about what to wear to church but grocery shopping, banking, playing in the park etc.

While I agree Sunday best for church, in the St. Louis humidity you will find me in modest shorts and t-shirts in the grocery store.

As a teen, I can say that it is next to impossible to find clothes that would be considered “modest”, especially when it comes to shorts (I have only one pair of jean shorts, because my mom refuses to buy any unless the inseam is longer than 10 inches (okay I’m exaggerating a little)). But it gets me mad when I see all these booty shorts and there are no reasonable ones, unless I want to look in the mom section (no offense, moms). Sooo I’m stuck wearing jeans and capris in 102 weather. except for the occasional skirt.
Also, yeah, its pretty easy for the men in this forum to critique what is or isn’t modest, but I’d like to see them try and find an outfit for a teenage girl at any department store. Which is not to say that I don’t try to dress modestly, I’m just saying its a lot harder than it looks.

i agree, it is very hard. Especially when one wants to express thier unique individuality. Basically, a mall is a conformists dream. If you want to look like someone else, and in most cases, someon else dresses like a $2 hooker, than the mall is where you go. I usually find it easier to shop at the back of stores, in the sales racks. Because modest clothes don’t really sell these days, they are usually reduced in price, but you have to be patient if you are looking for something in specific.

I recently read something written by a woman Ob/Gyn saying that health wise loose swingy skirts are best for women. Thought that was interesting. So maybe God did intend us to wear skirts and dresses most. . .

I have little girls and they do wear dresses at the park–shorts underneath and off they go. I don’t have problems with tree climbing and stream wading in their dresses. Learning to sew, and even make your own patterns, for clothes helps a lot with modesty. There are even some available “plain” (amish etc) patterns that can be easily altered, are comfortable and modest.
