As a painter (artist) people always say to me, ā€œI wish I was that talented.ā€
And that just might be my reaction to the writers. I’ve never really tried, but I doubt I could write well enough for publication.

Quirks? Well, I’m not one of those people who has to adopt every new technology, but what I have I quickly become addicted to.

Yesterday just before work my mp3 player gave up the ghost, so straight after work I pretty much HAD to get to the store to buy a new one, because I’d go slightly crazy without it.

And I HAVE to take my laptop up to my folks’ farm (even though they only have dialup internet - I need my CAF fix! 😃 )

This thread is fascinating!!! LOL! I love it! 😃 I had *no *idea people were able to stop their watches or pick up radio frequencies! Awesome! Or Annie - if you pull into a parking lot and have to make a left - what do you do? Does it bother you - or do you just deal with it?

it seldom happens, I pull in so I can pull out and go straight to the driveway–the one with the light, not the one that makes you wait for hours for one guy to make a left turn

As for me, I wish I had a steady, boring job where they give you a lot of money at the end of every month. There is always a trade-off - nobody hires artists - I think they are afraid that we might cut our ears off in the middle of a board meeting, or something.

Bye, have fun. I’m gonna go and be really talented in my studio. 😃
It would be nice to say that being a writer is how I make a living. Not there yet… still have to be in to work at Walmart bakery at 2 a.m. five days a week. I make good money and I like what I do (I’m a baker and cake decorator) and the crazy hours give me time to work on writing. Still, people treat my writing like a ā€œnice little hobbyā€ and probably wonder why I’m wasting my time when I could be furthering my education or climbing the corporate ladder and getting a better job (some wonder it out loud and to my face… that’s why I have kept my writing ā€œin the closetā€ until the day I can send them an invite to a book signing! :D)

And as for painting… I get a lot of compliments on my cakes and am told ā€œYou’re so artistic/talented!ā€ many times… but I have nothing but the utmost admiration and envy for painters… At least I hope no one would look at your latest efforts and say, ā€œBeautiful!ā€ then proceed to attack it with a serving knife!

SEE???!?!!?

I have found that if I say to a new acquaintance ā€œI’m a writer,ā€ I get, ā€œOh!ā€ followed by a deafening silence. As if they’re not sure whether to say ā€œHow nice!ā€ or ā€œI’m so sorry.ā€

I’m going back into the closet now with my notebook and pen…
Reading all this discussion about writers… as a one of those in the next generation of oddball authors, I can definitely say AMEN!! XD

Heck there are instances where even we weird each other out. You see I attended this writer’s workshop last summer and all our panelists were prominent figures on the Philippine literature scene. Two of them though were quite the old veterans when it came to nationalistic fiction. The stuff they wrote were pretty much either very political or themed around pre-colonial culture.

The thing was a grand majority of submissions were more rife with references to either American Pop Culture or Japanese Animation/Comics. (Guess which category mine was? XD) I mean, it was really funny at how they kept making comments such as ā€œWhat’s with these giant swords and magic stuff?ā€ or ā€œThe author here sounds more American than Filipino.ā€

So, far, so good - but considering the sort of people who like to come and look at art, the day is bound to come when something like that might happen. šŸ™‚

You should get yourself some really thick acrylic paints and make cake decorations on canvas - I bet someone would buy them. šŸ™‚

I am really enjoying this thread, it’s so much fun! I figured I’d chime in and share now.

I hear my friends call me when they’re thinking of me, even if they’re not anywhere near me. For instance, when I was off at college, about 1000 miles away from my mom, I very clearly heard her call my name. I gave her a phone call later that day, and she’d been cleaning out my room and thinking of me about the time I heard her. Another time I heard my husband call my name when he was babysitting our DS. Turns out he was wondering how to change a messy diaper. (First time babysitting, lol)

I’m in my mid twenties and about 95% of the music I like was made in the 1960s.

All of my food has to be in separate places on my dinner plate. It can’t be touching. And I eat one type of food completely before starting another. So if I have meat, rice, and green beans, they’re in three completely separate piles on the plate. And I eat all the green beans before touching the rice or the meat. Then I eat all the rice.

My bathroom looks like this jumbled mess of cosmetics thrown about the counter, but I know where every item is. If something gets moved, I can’t find it. If I try to make it look organized, I have no idea where anything is.

As a side note, I’ll post something fun about my husband, since he doesn’t post here on his own account. He loves the smell of books. The first thing he does when he picks up any book is to hold it by his nose and fan through the pages. He didn’t even know he did it until we started dating and I pointed it out.

Haha! Before I totally focused on music, I was a professional writer as well. Nothing great, as I did mostly journalism and a couple short bios for newspapers.

I sometimes get the same reaction when I tell people that I’m a professional classical musician. Sometimes it’s followed by a snide remark about not having a real job since I obviously don’t have to work hard (excuse me?!?), but sometimes people are sincerely interested as they’ve never met classical musician before. Now, when they find out that I’m a classical singer, some will actually be frank and won’t believe that I can actually make some sort of a living as a singer. It was a long time coming, but I can now.
  • So I guess being a musician makes me odd in general.
Other odd things about me…
  • I can control what happens in my dreams if I don’t like the direction they are taking.
  • I grew up enjoying hanging out with my parents and other older people more so than people my own age. (I don’t know if that’s really odd, but other people thought I was an odd-ball for that.)
  • I sometimes see colors or see sparkles (I don’t know how else to describe it) when I hear music particularly certain phrases and frequencies. It’s more in my head rather than outside of me.
  • When I am watching a concert and looking at the soloist (whether singer or instrumentalist) I sometimes see a glow emanating from them. Sometimes when I’m performing and look out at the audience, I see the same whitish glow surrounding certain people. I’d like to think that I’m seeing the spiritual love from God flowing from the musician to the hearer or from the hearer to the musician, but I really have no idea what it is. At first I thought maybe my eyes were playing tricks with lights, but it happens even in parlor concerts where there are no artificial lights or things which could produce it. It’s definitely odd for me. I know one other person who experiences the same thing, so at least I’m not the only odd-ball with that.
  • I color-code and style-code my clothing and shoes.
  • I’m an introvert and a dork to boot. How much more odd can I get? haha!

I’ll take a quote from a movie to state the obvious:

Burning building. Everybody runs out; we run in. Basically it’s a lunatic’s job.

I like this thread. Does that make me odd?

I’m 53, happily married to my husband for over 30 years, and I cover my locker at work and my fridge at home with pictures of my favorite actor, the hottest man on this earth, Robert Patrick (sigh, drool). (For those of you who are unfortunate enough that you’ve never heard of him, he played the melting man Terminator, and also John Doggett on X-Files, and Lt. Col. Tom Ryan on The Unit, and a whole lot of other good and not-so-good and really just awful movies.)

I cannot bear to wear anything around my neck, so my shirts, sweaters, etc. are all low-necked. Anything around my neck leaves red blotches. A turtleneck is my idea of torture–the thought of putting one on makes me cringe.

Finally, I will park a mile away if it means I can have a pull-through space. Drives my husband and kids crazy.

hmm lets see
ive 70% hearing in my right ear
I love historical novels and programs( i’m 23)
I find cooking relaxin( its the cleaning up i hate)

I get migraines rather regularly… and when they start I burp and burp and burp… it is so bad that if I even burp once my family will ask if I have a headache starting!

We (family) have pet snakes and pet rats… and the live rats are not food for the snakes! LOL!! OTOH, we have frozen rats in the freezer for the snakes. Not only do I have to thaw them out, I have used the blow dryer to make them warm and fluffy to convince a couple of picky pythons to eat.

I’m one of the very few women around with red/green color-blindness. Back in nursing school when I was doing my rotation in a school, and the nurse told me to give color-blindness tests to the boys. She barely believed me when I swore I couldn’t see the patterns either, she was sure I was trying to get out doing the task. But honestly, I fail those tests bigtime! 🤷

As a laugh… when I joined the Catholic Church 3 1/2 years ago (šŸ‘ happy day!), we tried to find a balloon in the shape of a flying pig. Why? Because long ago I swore I’d become Catholic when pigs fly. God has a sense a humor! šŸ‘

I feed our dog raw meat only. I know many vegetarians who do this too. They really love their dogs.

:rotfl: I get the same reaction. But who can blame them? There’s nothing exciting in being a writer unless you’re a famous one, is there? šŸ˜›
There’s also the fear that you’ll want to talk about or read your writings. . .what if you have a ream of poetry in your back pocket?! Terrifying.šŸ˜›

Yep - and what if it’s terrible - what do you say, then?

hmm lets see

Woo-Hoo!!! Another one. My husband and I both love these as well. My friends growing up always said I was born in the wrong century. haha! We also read lots of historical biographies and go as far as doing Revolutionary War Reenacting. So, we dress up in authentic period clothing and all that.

When I was 14, I used to roam my family’s forest in 19th century period dress with a basket filled with a piece of fruit, a pen and a copybook to write my stories and a journal to write my thoughts. I climbed to the top of the mountain, sit in the farmer’s neighboring field and write for most of the morning or the afternoon.

I’m also odd because I love fantasy and sci-fi. You’d think they’d be too different from each other, but really they’re not. When Star Wars came out with the heroes dressed in medievel style costumes flying around in space ships I was totally hooked!

I too love historical period pieces and books. Also love WWII era styles (those broaches the gals wore were just exquisite). Why don’t women wear them, or hats, anymore when they’re so beautiful? I wear broaches as often as I can, especially to Mass. There’s one gal who attends the same Mass who I swear waits to see what one I’ll wear next. LOL!

On top of all that, I’m very diminutive in height. Not classical dwarfism, but small at 4’ 8". I could join the ā€œLittle People of Americaā€, but feel it’s more for people with real shortness issues. Still, I can’t see out of most cars unless propped up on a thick cushion and even then my feet can’t reach the pedals. They simply don’t make cars for little people. We have a small truck, which is better than a car, but I still can’t see the nose of the truck. I don’t drive because of that and eye problems. Gee, I’m a mess, aren’t I? LOL!

I have written some poetry and inflict in on no one. As for my other writing, it seems to have a limited appeal, so I’ll never get rich writing, it seems. There, that’s plenty enough that’s odd about me without boring everyone to death.

Ok - more about me (us)…

We love to dress up in very fancy and elaborate Renaissance Costumes and go to festivals.

We could sit and watch what we call ā€œfood pornā€ cooking shows for HOURS, but we don’t have much time to do most of what we see in our own kitchen. We just like to watch. šŸ˜‰

While many Catholics here would not find this odd, we do not put on a single stick of Christmas decoration until Christmas Eve - then we go all out before Midnight Mass.

In the shower I absolutely must do everything in the same order every time - wash self, shave legs, wash hair, etc. - if I am on vacation and somehow I get out of order I get very frustrated.

If I’m super exhausted I can only fall asleep on my back with my arms up and crossed over my eyes. It makes my husband crazy because he will always get an elbow in the face if he rolls over to give me a kiss. šŸ˜›

If I’m eating on plastic or paper I can only use plastic utensils. If I’m eating on real dishes, I can only use metal utensils. Mixing them up is like fingernails on a blackboard to me.

I have to put on my right shoe first. Taking them off doesn’t matter, but putting them on it must be right foot first.

I’m just all around odd actually. I could keep going but it would just be embarrassing. :o

I speak Cat.

And it’s a good thing they don’t have to worry about sin, because the things they say… oh my!
