I Here is the link again: “THE SEDUCTION OF THE AMERICAN PUBLIC LIBRARY” by Helen Chaffee Biehle here: eagleforum.org/educate/1996/feb96/focus.html
I read your article. Clearly any library that has money to spend on 2live crew, has too much money. I would start a drive to slash it to enough for about 10 new books a year and see if they might be a little more selective. If I was in a town that could not operate a library without the ACLU interfering, I would rather see it closed than given over to those fools. Then all the pontificating librarians could go to work at McDonalds.

If you don’t like the book…put it down and get another. There are lots out there. It’s that simple.

God, Are You There? by overrated teen author Judy Bloom;
You obviously lead a very sheltered life. :tsktsk: I loved Judy Blume. And no, censorship shouldn’t exist in the USA. But it does. Go figure. Now lighten up, you troll!

No no no no no!!!

I registered here for the sole purpose of posting this, so read on.

I did a web search for “forced oral sex running with scissors” not b/c I’m a pervert, but because someone I love dearly had this happen to her–and said THIS BOOK ACCURATELY ACCOUNTS HER EXPERIENCE.

We could hide it; make it unavailable; etc–and the perpetrator would love it because it keeps it a secret, as it will likely remain forever for this person. OR we could allow others to read of the horrifying experience and maybe it would spur them to do something about it.

Why hide from the truth? It’s ugly, yes–but so are war, drugs, and a host of other societal ills that won’t go away. DO NOT censor or hide from this book, or the perpetrators of this heinous act win.

Didymus writes: Mr. Chomsky has a perfect right to hate the US and Israel (I don’t agree with him, of course).

Why “of course?” I am astonished that Mr. Chomsky and any others who may disagree with U.S. Policy, or who oppose Israel, should be lumped together in the minds of particular forum members with a justified aversion to published filth and violence. This would suggest to me, first blush, that the propagandists have done their job pretty well.

I haven’t posted in a while.

The problem with public libraries is that I can’t excersize my right not to buy the book. If the book exists, even if it lacks moral or artistic merit the public library can’t engage in censorship. We as private citizens can. So seeing public tax dollars being spent on something we personally disagree with can be frustrating.

As we have seen in the film industry, we have become more picky with out movies and the film makers eventually listen. But with literature, there are not just public libraries but public schools. No longer are children learning the classics that held over time, but more “relevant” topics for teens and tweens are allowed. A lot of it is just soft porn, to shock and stimulate and has little value in regards to thought and mastery of the art of storytelling.

If I were an author and the press picked up on a book burning featuring me, I can double thank the book burners.

Once for buying my book.

Again for the free publicity.

If they stole the book, thus depriving me of a profit, then they are thieves and should be arrested.

They can read it or burn it or use it as bird cage liner for all I care as long as I get the royalty.

Would it be ok to burn a book if you where doing so as your right to free speech?

Probably so, as long as it doesn’t contain a photo of a U.S. flag, and if the “books” were not records of your taxes. 😃

Well, if nothing else, this thread has reinforced my satisfaction at the decision we made to homeschool our son, and to keep him away from the public schools at all costs.

We homeschooled three children in grades K, 2, and 6, and it was a wonderful experience.

It was also a lot of effort and time commitment.

We ended up putting them back into the Catholic school the next year, as we found out the school really wanted them there and things got better. We still think the year at home was good for them. We used the very conservative “St. Elizabeth Ann Seton” Home study course. I’d heard of the Baltimore Catechism but never seen one until Emily got one and had to memorize answer. The program was a lot of work, and the grading was fairly strict, and I think overall it worked well.

They sent papers back graded in detail with helpful notes from actual human beings, and had good support when Julie called in with issues. They send out the report cards, accredation and everything.

ABSOLUTELY NOT! This is a grey area and is censorship reminscent of what the Nazis did. Yep, they did it too.

I always thought book burning/banning was terrible but now I have a dilemma. A few years back, when my husband and I were away from the church, we boutht and read a lot on the occult. Now I don’t know what to do with the books. I also have a book on a perfectly harmless subject that contains quite of bit on incorrect info - I don’t want the book and don’t want to spread the misinformation.

What do you guys think???

Koda,

Burn the books! Fast! If I buy a book and start reading it finding it morally offensive or anti Catholic I burn it or throw it out. Iam sick of the tolerance age. I have no tolerance for the secular society and their views. Look what has happened to the Movie industry since the Catholic Church stopped sensoring. There has to be a line drawn. We have allowed way to much of this " We have our rights to do what we want" attitude.

Dosent the CAtholic Church have a list of banned books or maybe they used to? You would think I would know! I own a Catholic Book store!

Someone mentioned if we raise a stink about a book it makes us curious and we read it.

Wasnt it St. Pio who said the greatest sin of our time is “curiousity”.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, burning them is the only way to make sure no one else gets them. I heard somewhere that the Church doesn’t have an “official” list nowadays but I’m sure there is an “unofficial” one. You have a book store! That must be great - if you knew how much I spend on books (mostly Catholic spritual books) but I’ll start teaching social studies next year so have a lot of history as well.

Who would get to decide what books are burned…? Might want to be careful here because one of the books on the ash pile might be the Bible. IMO Censorship of books until the goverment changes the Bill of Rights it will never (it happens in certain places I am sure) happen or should not happen…booksatoz.com/censorship/graphics/1amend.gif
The Supreme Court has ruled, in several cases, that Pornography does not always fit under level of protection of freedom of speech/ press. Hate material also fits into the category of not enjoying the same level of protection.

As consumers we have the ultimate say with our wallets. Unfortunately far too many people don’t see the harm in Playboy because the photos are so “artistic” and it starts with that and trickles down the line. As an art major I fit into this category when I was a young adult. Now I realize how destructive this garbage is. We have every right, as consumers to let the bookstores know how we feel about the product they keep at children’s level.

I have to agree with the original poster’s opinion on these books. As much as some of us would like to burn them, I think the thread was advocating making our consumer voices heard. The Bible is banned in many schools, where the library is stocked with books like “Are you there God, it’s Me Margaret” (that was a popular book with my fellow giggling Jr High classmates in the 80’s I am sure it is mild compared to today’s standards) , and “Cosmo Girl” in the magazine section.

Little girls reading Cosmo and even Cosmo Girl is extremely influential. Parents should also beware of all the similar teen zines out there. I know, I was a little girl once.

I wish someone had been able to get ahold of NAZI propaganda and burn it before it was allowed to infect a culture with Hate for the Jews, among other etnical/religious groups.

We are in our third year of homeschool with Seton. We have a 3rd grader, kindergartener and preschooler. It *is *alot of hard work and a *huge *commitment, but every time I consider enrolling them in a mainstream school, I receive the grace to know I am doing the right thing for our family, thank God! We are in a Catholic homeschool group and there are two new families who quit our Catholic elem. I’m not advocating this, we would probably send our kids there if we could afford the tuition. We spend $600 on our Seton curriculum this year, but it is well worth it. The courses are demanding. I am thankful we took our daughter out of public school when we did. It just wasn’t the place for us.

Yes. If flag burners are protected under free speech, you would be protected too, as long as you own the books or have permission from the owner. I don’t know how effective it would be though, it would make a powerful statement, though appear negative on your part, rather than the book material.

Peace,

I think its wonderful you home school. Its the best way to educate your children, and you are the one who will be influencing them not some teacher who dosent have the morals you do.

I home schooled with Seaton and loved the time I spent with my daughter. Seaton is demanding but well worth the effort. God will reward you greatly! She is now in a Catholic Middle School and I run our Catholic Book Store. Guess what , her grades in Religion are As, but struggles in math. Does the math concern me? Nope. It would if it was religion.

I will share this with you, the struggle I have as a parent with a catholic school not being fully catholic and parents who dont care is very hard. Already I had to meet with the principle about a teacher.

Oh yea the topic was burning books. They have some in the library I would like to burn!!!
