What is penance?

So, then, your saying that someone in the Church, one day, declared that Mary and Jesus want us to carry out acts of penance…and seeing as the Church is infallible in faith and morals…I guess there’s no arguing with them as to how they came to that conclusion.
Where did the bible come from? Which church gave it to the world? Ponder that.

Who taught you that everything is made up? It is more likely that what you believe is made up, isn’t it? Making something up includes subtracting as well as adding. Your bible has less books. Your church has less Sacraments, less history, less of everything. That has to be made up, right? I mean, God didn’t take all of those things out. Who then? Man.

Reign it in a bit, don’t get so upset.

First of all, I don’t subscribe to sola scriptura and if no one around here knows who decided that Mary and Jesus want people to carry out acts of penance…then just say you don’t know who decided that they know what Jesus and Mary want, but your happy to believe it.

Isn’t the Gospel message to repent and believe in the Gospel?
The Blessed Mother has been appearing in different places all over the world and her message is always the same also. Repent and believe. Listen to Jesus, do His will, not your own.

I told you before, Liberation. There were the apparitions which have been totally accepted as true by the Roman Catholic Church. They were in Fatima, Portugal. And the Blessed Ever Virgin Mary appeared to three children. Her message definitely included penance. There have been numerous other apparitions…Akita, Japan…Lourdes, France…Medjugoria, Croatia, inner locutions to Father Gobbi in Italy. There is no lack of the Blessed Ever Virgin Mary, Mother of Jesus Christ Who is God, and Who gave us to Her and She to us as He hung dying on the Cross telling us to repent…and calling us to acts of penance. The Roman Catholic Church fully supports this. Now, can we get back to the subject I, the OP, asked? Thank you very much for paying attention to this thread.

And where on this forum does it say that every thread is up for debate by anti-Catholics anyway?
I asked a simple question. If you didn’t have the answer, why did you join the thread? It was rude to try to bring dissension onto this thread!

I’m not upset at all! See the fallacy of sola scriptura? You easily misinterpreted my tone!

Seriously, do you think a faith that can trace its roots directly to Christ just made things up over the centuries and no one challenged it? Luther challenged individuals within the church, and their practices. The teachings he left mostly alone. And that is all the good that came from the rebellion.

Does the power to bind and loose strike a chord? The Apostles had the power to bind and loose, combined with God’s revelation to them through their lives. It’s in the power to bind and loose. which Christ gave to the church knowing what would be done with it. Must you read everything to believe? Where does faith enter in? Really?

***********Mary’s assumption is made up…what’s to challenge, it’s an infallible teaching of the Church.

*************Another good thing is that people discovered that they could receive the promises of Christ outside the institution and requirements of the Church.

Faith is always present. Skepticism and cynicism enter into the equation when one looks at the uncensored history of the Church in relation to culture, politics and religion.

This is the closest I’ve gotten to an answer.
You have actually received a couple of very good answers, a very nice one from po18guy for openers but you simply don’t seem to be able process the concept that every part of Christianity is not ordered specifically in the Bible in modern English. That is the approach of the entire schismatic movement called “protestants”.
Note that muslims on this site say similar things in order to try to relegate Christianity to non sense. How about this one? Where does Jesus say " worship me "? They cannot make the logical step of understanding that since we believe that Jesus is God we should worship Him. The Bible does not say that your church…or anybody’s, should “have a youth choir or, any choir” The issue is not explicit but rather implicit…isn’t it?
Our Church was not formed in the 1800’s…it was formed 2000 years ago when the witnesses and many principals were still alive. Try to grasp the significance of that fact and you will get a better picture of how our Christianity differs from yours which certainly must be and for a reason. 🤷

Thanks for the link, but it does not address the question…where is it found, or who decided, that Mary and Jesus want us to carry out acts of penance.
I didn’t give YOU that link smarty pants. I gave it to Jesus N Cherie on Post # 23.

Here is the answer I gave YOU, on post 25.

The church is led by the Holy Spirit and Jesus Himself. Who has authority over the Holy Trinity? And you didn’t answer my questions. Are you going to?

When I think of penance, it reminds me of what all my Catholic friends say: “OFFER IT UP!” 🙂

Visions? That’s where it comes from???

Ok, thanks for the answer, now I know.
The three Magi had a vision which told them to return home by another route. Joseph had a vision before he took the Holy Family to Egypt. You discount visions? Really now…

Just so everyone knows, the red statements were added into my quote, and are not mine.

Since the Protestant church is 1/4 as old as Christ’s Church, all criticism here is equivalent to a 15 year old telling grandfather all about life. Chutzpah! Oy Weh!

Amen! 👍 The single best piece of advice in all of scripture was spoken by Mary at the the wedding feast at Cana: **“Do whatever he tells you” **(John 2:5). Is it coincidence that Mary not only introduced Christ to the world, but she also introduced His public ministry? Too bad so many Christians fail to see it.

I was priveledged to be guided to the link in Post #23 which led me to this: (Luke, xiii, 5): “except you do penance, you shall all likewise perish.” For any who might not get the verse number, it is: the Gospel of Luke, chapter 8, verse 5.

I cannot thank the sender of this link enough. There were quite a number of questions I had been dwelling on that were answered in this link. You have truly been a blessing, as Jesus sent me to read this link. Thank you for your openess to the promptings of the Holy Spirit, and for your knowledge of where to find things. I will hopefully learn enough someday to guide another soul to these answers. Thanks be to God, Who leads us in His Triumph! Thanks be to God, Who’s got the VICTORY !!!
