Is there Salvation outside the Roman Catholic Church?
I pray to God there is, especially for all of us who espouse the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic faith that is not Roman in character. :o

Such questions reveal a pride in one’s Rite, which is not a problem, except to the extent that it is exclusive and disrespectful to other Rites who are also in Communion with the successor of Peter. 😦

The proper understanding of Extra ecclessiam nullam salus must include the context. When it was proclaimed, the idea was held that anyone who was not Catholic knew the truth and they CHOSE to deny Christ, as it was the only form of Christianity. We know now that this is not the case, nor was it ever the case. It still holds that you cannot be saved if you know Jesus is God and deny him or if you know that the Catholic Church is the true church founded by Christ and deny it. If, through no fault of your own, you do not know one or both of these points, you are not doomed. Any person can be saved if they act upon the grace given to them by God. Even a pagan may enter heaven.
Question, do the main stream Protestant’s not have the necessary truths for salvation through Sacred Scripture?

Define necessary.

What do you need to survive? Food and water. Air. Sleep. You could survive on bread and water and live in a cave. That is necessary. Would it be an easy life? Would it be a good life? Would it be living or just survival?

The reality, even if some do not see it, is that Jesus left us no writings. He did not leave Scriptures. He never even TOLD anyone to write it down. He left a living, teaching Church armed with Sacraments and authority. These Sacraments assist us in our journy to salvation. The Church represents the best way to go.

Back to my question. What do you need to survive? What is necessary? You can try to make it on bread and water, but it would not be much of a life. Or, you can have a full life with food and drink and a comfortable home.

Having lived a lifetime in Protestantland before crossing the Tiber in 2006, I can safely say the main difference is OSAS versus a logical “process”.
Shalom~

Through Sacred Scripture, the Protestants have learned of Christ as Lord and Savior, the Trinity, the need for Baptism, and so on. I am sure there is more, so for these reasons do they not have salvation.

Protestants have no moral guide. Many pastors teach that artificial birth controls is acceptable, that remarriage is not adultery. WIthout an infallible teaching authority their salvation is in peril.
One is not saved by invincible ignorance. They must live a moral life just like a Catholic. The natural moral law is engraved in their heart.
It is possible but difficult for someone outside the Church to be saved.

Hello to all,

I read all the posts and am more confused than ever. Thanks! (just kidding)

When my brother died as a Jehovah’s Witness, many Catholics condemned him to hell.

Believe me it was a huge turn off to the Catholic faith.

I must say too, that I have been condemned to hell by a Baptist (once saved, always saved). Sorry, but I just cannot swallow that one.

3 years ago, I have been praying to God for his Truth and that I may be humble enough to accept it and follow his path. This my friends, has been a whirlwind of a journey. Beautiful, but full of trials!

After reading this thread, I have a clearer understanding of what sanctifying grace is compared to plain old grace, and what really sin can do to our soul.

Truthfully, I know, by God’s Grace, I am led to the Catholic church. I prayed for the humility to accept his truth, as I am defiant by nature. I cannot with a good conscience go any other way. I would be rejecting his Truth as it is revealed to me.

I believe my brother has a shot at receiving Salvation, despite the fact they that JW believe that Jesus is not God. He was in a misguided religion to no fault of his own. God is merciful to his mis-guided children.

After all, did not Jesus save the guy hanging on the cross next to him, because Truth was revealed to him? I think God reveals his truth at some point in our lives. What we do with that Truth is our choice.

Pray for the God’s Truth, pray for the humility to accept it. It is not easy as sometimes the truth can be.

Thanks for the posting

And yet there are Protestant denominaitons that deny the Trinity, the need for Baptism, and so on. Further, if you limit discussion to mainline Protestant denominations, everything that they have resembling Catholic practice or teachings came from the Church, not scriptures.

Jesus gave us the Church, the Church gave us the Bible.

Again, no salvation outside of the Church does not mean that they are damned.

The Catholic Church teaches that your brother does have a "shot at salvation’ because he was innocently ignorant of the Catholic Church. If he lived a moral life then he can attain salvation. Also rememeber that the Catholic Church has infallibilly declared that purgatory exist. Purgatory shows us God’s mercy. Unless your brother was living in unrepented mortal sin then he will, one day, be in heaven with God.

It is God’s will that all belong to the Church that He established. Yes you should accept this truth. God has led you to the truth.

Yes, I am on my way to embracing the faith. I was initiated in the Catholic church 10 years ago, but for all the wrong reasons. I became Catholic because my husband is one. It wasn’t in my heart and meant nothing to me. I learned some things, but was on again off again, so to speak and had no regard for it in any way.

Believe me, the Catholic church is not where I thought God would lead me. I even fought it, questioned it, denied that it was his truth. In the end…Truth won over…to be without it causes way too much internal conflict. To reject the Catholic church would be to deny God’s Truth.

Awesome Post!

What a mess.

“No Salvation outside the Church” is a solemn teaching of the Church, all Catholics are obliged to believe it, and it can never change.

What has been going on for some time (see above thread for arguments about how long) is that the Church has been speculating farther and farther about which people might be able to be seen as “within the Church”.

Some of the speculation has gotten pretty wild. Ultimately, though, speculation is all that it is.

Everyone should keep in mind that a teaching of the Church remains a teaching of the Church, even if certain Cardinals are so embarassed about it that they will only put it in the Catechism by “restating it positively”.

I know many MORAL Protestants and their Pastors who do not practice birth control, are in a committed marriage for life, and do not support abortion. They believe in the Holy Trinity, the necessity for Baptism, and accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
As a convert to Catholicism my Baptism in the Baptist Church was just as valid as if I had it done in the Catholic Church. My marriage is just as valid as if it was performed in a Catholic Church. So I find it very hard to believe that if salvation is exclusive to the CC that these two Sacraments are as valid as if they were performed in the CC. For if all other religions are doomed then how can the have valid Sacraments?
There are many good moral Christians out there that participate in these two Sacraments and hold on to Christ the Lord as their savior that forgave their sins with all their hearts. They live and breathe Jesus Christ 24/7, lead moral lives, so I find it very hard to believe there is no salvation for them. I am not going to judge them on who is and who is not going to be saved. God is the only Judge and He is the only one who knows who has salvation. They pray to the same God as we do, does not God hear their prayers also? Does not the Holy Spirit work through them in their daily lives? Yes.

There is salvation outside of the Roman Church, but not outside of Christ.

What is the difference between Catholic Salvation and non-Catholic Christian Salvation? Is there Salvation outside the Roman Catholic Church?

Yes!

Remember the teaching said that “outside the catholic church there is no salvation”.

I don’t see where in that statement is uses “Roman Catholic Church”. I only see “outside the catholic church there is no salvation”.

Remember that all Christian Church could call themselves Catholic; the Latin Church is not the only one that use the term catholic. My O.C.A. Church uses catholic in it prayers and I’m Eastern Orthodox Christian.

Latins are not the only ones that can use that term. You have no more right to use term then we do.

It is not so much that there is “no moral guide”. Most of their morals are influenced by Catholicism (though they may not recognize it). It is a case of " In those days there was no king in Israel; every man did what was right in his own eyes." Judg 17:6
since they read the Scripture and determine for themselves how it should be applied.

If Catholics did this, they were out of order. The Catholic Church does not condemn, nor should any members of her do so. Only God knows. I can understand that experiences with people behaving badly is a huge turn off, but please do not confuse your experience with the Catholic faith. Their actions were not representative of Catholic teaching.
I must say too, that I have been condemned to hell by a Baptist (once saved, always saved). Sorry, but I just cannot swallow that one.
Well, you either need to swallow it, or death will swallow you! We are all under a death sentence because of original sin. Unless you get a pardon for this, the consequence is separation from God. That is not a Baptist condemnation, either.😉

This is true. He can be saved by grace, through faith, just as you have been.
After all, did not Jesus save the guy hanging on the cross next to him, because Truth was revealed to him? I think God reveals his truth at some point in our lives. What we do with that Truth is our choice.
I think he saved the guy because he repented of his sin, and accepted Jesus as Lord. He recognized that His punishment was just, that he deserved it for his crime, and that Christ was innocent. Yes, truth was revealed to him, and he responded to the grace.

There is salvation outside of the Roman Church, but not outside of Christ.
The OP is very proud and centered on his Romanism, and sometimes forgets that there are even other Catholics that are not Roman, let alone those who are members of Christ’s Body that cannot be recognized outwardly as Catholic at all.😊

If the Catholic Church (lay people and clergy) is the Body and Jesus is the Head and together Christ Himself (Infallible)manifesting Himself through the Holy Spirit in the Eucharist then how can there be salvation outside the Catholic Church when all others reject the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Christ Himself.?

For surely the only way to the Father is through the Son.
