What is the Gospel?

I’ve stated before, in this thread, what I believe the gospel to be. Needless to say, we both believe that the gospel is truth. So therefore, discussing the Church as the foundation and pillar of truth would be relevant to this thread, since it would directly impact the gospel.
I think your discussion of the Catholic Church being the One True Church is an essential doctrine worthy of discussion. However, it should not impact the proclamation of the gospel, unless you are making it a necessary element in the gospel. Please clarify what you mean.

It is the Church who proclaims the Gospel, is it not?

Do you disagree that this is the gospel of God as proclaimed in the Scriptures?
Adam, tell me from where and when did the Gospel of Jesus Christ come from? Don’t you think we Catholics who put it all together understand and know what it is all about. The Holy Spirit was there in the Church from the beginning. Do you some how believe that when your leader, Calvin began telling you how it was to be interpreted that it changed the truth of what Jesus handed down to us throught the Church.

I frankly don’t know what you are trying tell us through all your rhetoric.:(Carlan

The body of Christ is made up of individuals who are the privileged ones to proclaim the gospel.

“**How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” **

The Message of Salvation to All

For Moses writes about the righteousness that is based on the law, that the person who does the commandments shall live by them. But the righteousness based on faith says, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’” (that is, to bring Christ down) or “‘Who will descend into the abyss?’” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written,** “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” ** But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. - Rom 10

The gospel of God came from God. It is His good news! My leader is Jesus Christ and not John Calvin. Jesus Chrsit is our Prophet, Priest, and King! Jesus Christ is God incarnate, the 2nd person of the godhead!

How is it not the necessary element for the gospel considering that it gave us the gospel?

Did God personally come down from Heaven and hand someone the Bible, as it is today?
Actually, someone preached (proclaimed) the gospel to me before I had my own Bible. I was a Christian for months before I even owned a Bible.

Your experience is not surprising. Jesus left an authoritative Church, not a book, to make disciples of all nations.

Think deeply about this.

Please proclaim the gospel to me, and maybe I can understand where you are coming from.
And how you know that that person proclaimed it to you correctly without inserting any heresy, is that you can trace his authority in an unbroken line back to Jesus Himself, through the Apostles and their lawful Successors. 🙂

I will proclaim this, and refute me if I’m wrong. While Jesus was teaching on Earth, there was no “New Testament”. For the first 100 years or so after His death, there were no gospels (as in Matthew Mark Luke and John). There were epistles, yes, but if it is wrong to take the epistles of their own accord right now, outside of the context of the four gospels, was it also not wrong to take them out of context then, as in, by themselves, outside of the preaching of the living men who wrote them? Do you believe that it is wrong to look at a verse outside of its context?

I think this is our communication problems. Some Catholics believe that when we are discussing the gospel (good news) we are discussing the four gospel accounts (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John). However, proclaiming the good news is different than the four gospel accounts. How can to Apostles proclaim the gospel recorded in the book of Acts prior to the four gospel accounts were written?

It’s not our communication problem at all. This is exactly my point? How could they proclaim the entire truth prior to the four gospel accounts?

Because God revealed the gospel to them (Apostles). The gospel is from God. Do you understand how Paul received the gospel? What is the gospel that the Apostle Paul received directly from Jesus?

Because God revealed the gospel to them (Apostles).
The Apostles walked with Christ for three years - they lived and breathed the Gospel during that entire time. What the Apostles proclaimed in their preaching was what Christ had taught them during those three years.
The gospel is from God
.

Right, but God normally works through His people.
Do you understand how Paul received the gospel?
St. Paul received it by means of special revelation. Only St. Paul is St. Paul, though. Most of us learn it at Sunday School and at Mass.
What is the gospel that the Apostle Paul received directly from Jesus?
That to persecute the Church is to attack Christ (God) personally, and that Christ (God) is indeed the Messiah, just as the Church was preaching.

The Apostles received the gospel from Jesus Christ, and they were led into all truth by the Holy Spirit.

Were the Apostles infallible in their oral preaching?

And by the way, do you understand that Paul went to Jerusalem twice to confer with Peter concerning the gospel?

Why did Paul consider Peter to be the standard against which he should measure himself?

Let’s please bring our conversation back to the thread topic. What is the gospel? 🙂 Here’s a challege for my dear Catholics siblings. Can you please post the gospel with Scripture?

Galatians 2

Then after fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus along with me. I went up because of a revelation and set before them (though privately before those who seemed influential) the gospel that I proclaim among the Gentiles, in order to make sure I was not running or had not run in vain. But even Titus, who was with me, was not forced to be circumcised, though he was a Greek. Yet because of false brothers secretly brought in—who slipped in to spy out our freedom that we have in Christ Jesus, so that they might bring us into slavery— to them we did not yield in submission even for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might be preserved for you. And from those who seemed to be influential (what they were makes no difference to me; God shows no partiality)—those, I say, who seemed influential added nothing to me. On the contrary, when they saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been entrusted with the gospel to the circumcised (for he who worked through Peter for his apostolic ministry to the circumcised worked also through me for mine to the Gentiles), and when James and Cephas and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given to me, they gave the right hand of fellowship to Barnabas and me, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised. Only, they asked us to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do.

Did the Apostles preach the Gospel accurately (ie: infallibly) prior to writing the 27 books of the New Testament in their old age? 🙂
