What is the Gospel?

Tell me more. A Jesus Christ is proclaimed by Mormons. A Jesus is in the Quran.
Well, the Jesus Christ we Babtists proclaim is the Jesus Christ in the four gospels of the New Testament of the King James Version of the Bible. He is the Son that is born to us, Who’s government lies on His shoulders, and is called in all capital letters
WONDERFUL COUNCELER MIGHTY GOD

So, yeah…

Okay, so what’s the good news about Jesus Christ for us?

That’s an incorrect interpertation and a very low view of the Word of God. :
No, actually he’s right. Look at the quote again. Jesus says, “you search the Scriptures, hoping to find in them life.” Subtext being, you’re looking in the wrong place; I’m standing right here!

Did Jesus have a low view of the Scriptures? Not at all - but He did know that the dead letter of the Law remains dead, until it comes to life in the faith and good works of human beings.

I’m not sure where all the chatter is going here. Perhaps we are a little too used to arguing about things that we disagree on that we argue about things we can otherwise agree on? :hmmm:
The “nutshell” Gospel is indeed well summarized in John 3:16. God loves us and has reconciled us to himself through the life death and resurrection of Jesus. There is certainly more to the good news, however. Christ has sent his Holy Spirit to guide us and strengthen us on the journey. Why? In the mystery of God’s plan, God allows us to cooperate with his Spirit in accomplishing the salvation of mankind. This is just as mysterious as the actuality of God becoming man to accomplish our redemption.
In addition, we still have a struggle ahead of us despite the fact that Jesus Christ has conquered sin and is seated at the Father’s right hand interceding for us. That struggle involves persevering in faith, hope and love until the end of our mortal lives. This is only possible by remaining united to Christ, apart from whom we remain doomed to eternal separation from God.
It is perhaps the details of how we remain united to Christ and the manner in which the Holy Spirit works in the Church that some of the disagreement exists. I havent seen anyone actually address this issue, however, so it remains unclear.

I’m quite familiar with the CCCs view of scripture and it agrees with me that scripture, by itself, is insufficient to convey the meaning of the gospel without the Church’s authoritative teachings, guided by the HS…
You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me,

Do you really believe that you did not abuse the Word of God with your interpertation above?

Acts 17

Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews. And Paul went in, as was his custom, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures, explaining and proving that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead, and saying, “This Jesus, whom I proclaim to you, is the Christ.” And some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, as did a great many of the devout Greeks and not a few of the leading women. But the Jews were jealous, and taking some wicked men of the rabble, they formed a mob, set the city in an uproar, and attacked the house of Jason, seeking to bring them out to the crowd. And when they could not find them, they dragged Jason and some of the brothers before the city authorities, shouting, “These men who have turned the world upside down have come here also, and Jason has received them, and they are all acting against the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus.” And the people and the city authorities were disturbed when they heard these things. And when they had taken money as security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.

Of course not! It’s very simple. OT scripture bears witness to Jesus. NT scripture obviously bears witness to Jesus, too. But people still misinterpret both. Scripture does no one any good until it’s properly understood-and believed.

Right. St. Paul shined the light of the Holy Tradition of the Apostles on to the Scriptures and interpreted them to the crowds, thus showing forth things that those people (who were familiar with those Scriptures from the time they were born, let us not forget) had never seen in them before, when they were reading them without the light of the Holy Tradition.

Okay, please proclaim your understanding of the Catholic understanding of the gospel. 😉

Oh, C’mon! Who doesn’t know the greatest story ever told? God so loved the world He gave His only begotten Son so that whosoever believes in Him, shall not perish, but have everlasting life! The word “Christ” means “promised one” or “messiah” He is the New Covenant of God’s mercy. To replace the Old Covenant (which was broken) and to bring the God of Isreal to the gentiles. (“Gentiles” means one outside the covenant of Abraham)

Im not sure what your intended point was, but if it was an argument for the sufficiency of Scripture alone, you failed IMHO.
St Paul’s “reasoning” with them and his “explaining and proving” cannot be separated from Paul, who had the charism of infallibility and who had been appointed by God for this purpose. If Scripture alone were sufficient, Paul might simply have pointed out which verses required addl reflection. It is significant that the Scriptures alone were insufficient in Pauls estimation - otherwise he would not have felt the need to “explain and reason” what the Word of God meant.
Also, you may have missed my post above on what “the Gospel” is…we were posting simultaneously.

Please look at the OP. We know the demons believe and shutter. Jesus also taught that not all who say Lord Lord will enter the kingdom of God. So, please clarify what you mean about the good news of God.

Yes, we need to get back to that. In concise form I did give my understanding of it in post #7, then backed it up, albeit somewhat sketchily, in post # 53, then even more concisely- a bit too concisely, perhaps-in post #133.

The gospel is Gods plan of reconciling Himself to man-the righteous dying for the unrighteous-demonstrating and proving a love beyond anything we can imagine. Through this gospel the prophesied New Covenant is implemented, where God promised to write His laws on our hearts and in our minds-helping us to realize our direct dependency on Him to be able to fulfill His commandments and become transformed into the beings He’s always had in mind to live eternally with Him.
Oh… okay, now I remember your postings. When I followed them, it sure seemed that you posted a works righteousness gospel. I think there is a thread on that topic. I believe the gospel is a work righteousness gospel based on the perfect righteousness of another. However, I don’t believe our views will come out the same.

No, they won’t. It will come back to the fact that, while we both believe in sanctification-and can agree on it’s definition, Catholics still believe sanctification and justification are inseparable-that God’s in the business of erasing past sins, then molding people into beings who are authentically righteous.

I appreciate your presence here Philthy, the merry-go-round of one liners don’t seem to be making things clear. I’ve never been very good at mind reading. Just simple old plain talk the way I was taught the WHOLE truth of the Gospel. Thanks for showing up. Carlan
