What is the purpose of such a large universe?

All things are from, and by, and for Christ 🙂

There are countless things we shall never know anything of - but God knows them, in all their variety; & they give Him glory, each as the thing it is. It is Christ - not man - Whom Hebrews 1 calls “the Heir of the ages”; so all creation, bar nothing, finds its fulfilment in Him. 🙂 “In Him,” St. Paul says, “all things hold together”. 🙂
Excellent point! 👍

All the other posts were good too. But this one really stood out to me. It seems to me that the purpose of the universe is to be a kind of womb for the life, death and resurrection of Christ. All things find their fulfillment in Christ.

The universe is as big as our cells are small. Only to man does size make so much difference.

We ask questions like this because, in our minds, such a relatively large space must have some purpose when compared the relatively minuscule space of it we occupy. If we look at it from God’s perspective, where relative size is not important, it is less troubling to think of a “vast” empty universe.

I agree with previous posts saying we do not know the purpose of the expanse of the universe. However, I suspect it has more direct purpose for us than we may think.

      • What if God gave us proof? - - -
Where I’ll put the same answer.
If the Universe would be small and had a border within our reach, we’d know that behind it, is God – is Heaven. That would be so, if we could not by all means get across this border. Here would be the proof, that God exists, heaven exists. No faith would be necessary to deserve heaven after being examined here for some 10, 20, 50, 90 or even 100 years of life.

God did give proof of Himself through Jesus Christ. A small universe with its closed boundaries would be an extra proof If God kept giving us suchlike continuous proof of His existence. The earth would be needless for probation and to actually EARN the chance to live with God in eternity. We had seen God in Jesus and now we’d see the border where He is behind. Everybody would believe now, even he had not deserved it.

Well, I guess by making the universe as big as it is, God’s just showing us His glory, power and beauty. Because there are many beautiful constellations and what not. It also shows us how small we are in comparison. It’s all about us being at awe of what God’s capable of and how our human minds can’t come to grips with it lol.

You mean God is just "showing off " his Glory and Power, like some people buy Big cars and houses to show how rich they are, even if they don’t actually need them?

How about not “showing off” but “showing forth”? 🙂

Firstly, it seems to me that the main purpose of all of Creation is to give glory to God. How much glory? Infinite glory, to an Infinite Creator! Little wonder the universe keeps expanding! Who says WE need to be in all or even several physical parts of it, for it to give glory to its Creator?

However… we know that the second (and arguably even more important) purpose of Creation is to support man, the only handiwork of God (out of all created things) made in His own image and likeness. Thus, unlike the rest of Creation, we were made not just to give glory to God, but to dwell eternally (long after the physical universe has perhaps even ceased to exist?) and most intimately, in His Trinitarian love. So, while the rest of Creation merely reflects Christ’s majesty, we are ourselves Christs! The pinnacle of God’s perfect creation - with a perfectly free and Spirit-guided will included!

Indeed, and therefore, man has been appointed the steward of all Creation, for, despite its awesome characteristics (size included), it cannot, by its own inanimate self, choose for good over evil. We do that on its behalf. So when our first parents sinned, not only did our own human natures become disordered; in a sense the whole of Creation did too! Witness the increasing volatility of earth’s nature and the rapid deterioration of its environment - in direct ratio, it would certainly seem, to the growing rebellion of secular man! Could the trajectory of some currently distant asteroid(s) even now be subtly/imperceptibly changing, to an eventual, disastrous, collision course with earth, because of man’s failed sterwardship of it? While we blissfully sing and dance to all manner of false, impotent gods? Quite a possibility, at least in my personal view!

If God is way “above” His Mighty Creation, so are we - over the rest of His Mighty Creation! But then that’s just Him, sharing everything with us, again! How typical! Feel good. Feel very good! And humble! Very humble!

God bless y’all.

Once a physicist call Richard Feynman said that the universe was very amazing and very complicated, he couldnt believe that a creator could have created it with the only purpose of having a moral struggle between good and evil.

I believe he didnt see the big picture of it. I think we are still evolving and perhaps someday humanity might be more enlightenment rather than remaining the way it is right now.
There could also be all kind of enlightenment life forms out there taking part on all the creation. I dont really believe that the whole creation is all about a struggle between good and evil.
Right, this is a straw man. The “struggle between good and evil” only becomes an issue when some of God’s free creatures choose to turn away from Him. It is not the purpose for creation in the first place.

**If really such peculiar idea like “God shows off” would be created among human brains, God would much more so “show off” with a “simple” seed.
All the worlds techniques and all the worlds knowledge couldn’t create a single seed for a single living blade of grass. Or even smaller; a living unicellular organism or smaller yet, a bacterium and smallest - an atom of hydrogen (not to speak of quarks).

But yes, God will “show off” as some will bitterly have to take to acknowledge when He comes again to judge all the living and the dead as we know of many verses of the Bible such as 1.Peter 4:5 or Matt 25:31, or Revelation 18:1, and others.
The size of the Universe is nothing to match God and His kingdom.

I don’t have trouble with many philosohical questions, but this one I have a hard time with. What could God’s purpose be for creating such a massive universe? My normal answer to such a question would be that he made if for us. However, the universe is so huge that I can’t imagine humanity ever being able to make use of it all. Indeed, it is so massive that I don’t imagine people ever even being able to even know everything that is out there. So how, then, could it be for us? Or, is my premise flawed? Did God create some things for a purpose other than us. Or is there more than just us, and those other beings are what some of creation is for? Finally, maybe humanity will live for billions of years and eventually be able to appreciate or make use of all of the universe? What do you all think is the reason for such a large universe

All the planets, all the suns and all the black holes exert their
various forces on one another. Theoretically they can cause
a chaos or mutual distruction. But we know that they are there
in harmony and mutual assistance-
for billions of years.-- a fact we human have to
learn and practise. The scientists are very eager to find life
elsewhere in the universe. Finding even premitive life forms
can shake and destroy the foundations of several religions, faiths, social sciences and philosophies

well he needs a big place to put him and all the good souls who will stay with him for all eternity. Thats the simple answer!
Man, that kind of reasoning is what makes skeptics eat you alive in a debate:
  • Souls don’t take up any “space” in the physical realm, ergo all souls in the universe could be here, right now, on the same “place”. Remember that the spiritual world is different from this one, that kind of analogy will only go down some endless byzantine discussion, poetic as it may sound.

****And that’s exactly why they are so eager to find.
People (human kind) exists say 12ooo years. That’s how old language is. Before language, alleged “Humans” weren’t human, but humanoid, (looking like a human).

In spite of this scientific discovering, that language exists 12,000 years or let it be 15,000 years, there is a race going on into the past, to find the first humans.
Laughable!

Human race for another Billion years? - Definitely no as: The time when we know about God is roughly 5.000 years; but presumably as long as we have language which might be 12ooo years ago. John 1:1: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

Quite often when we speak about years, we do not imagine, how long 1,000 years are. Take the inventions of the last 200 years. But we know less about around 500 years of European history after the Romans and up to European Emperors, (the so called aeon) less than of Greek and Roman history 2,ooo and even 3.000 years ago or that of Babylon or Egypt 2,500 before Christ.

1,000 years is a huge time and yet a short time, imagining Christ had been with us only 2,000 years ago.

And Jesus Christ is the point the whole history of the world winds around.
No one should ever think, Jesus would have done that incredible deed of salvation twice - in another imagined “world” out in space.

There is but one world, however often scientists say it’s ridiculous to think we’d be unique. But then, they also think, Humanity and human spirit developed out of itself (Darwinism). This to refer to human kind, is so terribly, unbelievably ridiculous, that all the rest of speculations resulting of suchlike error, might well be taken as trash.

For one thing: Is there a single reason, that whales with a brain a lot older than ours, did not develop spirit and esprit like humans?!

The Big Bang Theory has the universe starting from “nothing” and then from there the universe at a size smaller than a proton and expanding (exploding?) up to it’s present size. btw, throw out the math text books, …here we have zero equaling 1.

The universe continues to expand and this is very interesting as Alan Guth and other cosmologist points out. The expansion rate and other variables are so precise allowing matter to to exist and life to form. :extrahappy: A tad slower and the universe would collapse back in on itself.:banghead: A tad faster and no matter could form and thereby no life.😦

It’s been compared to a needle balanced on its tip, any slight miniscule nudge would send it crashing down. Cosmologist are also amazed at the consistency of this speed throughout the eons. This stability plays a big part in the beauty and order of the universe.

Far from being a “show off God”…his glory is proclaimed by his care and love by his precise settings, parameters and forethought essential for bringing forth life! All this for his children!👍

The universe proclaims his glory because it shows his love and care for life! Also, to an infinite god, this universe he created is a drop in the bucket.:bowdown2:
The universe MUST be as large as it is in order to maintain and sustain life!

Peace::tiphat:

In the vastness of the universe we see the glory and nature of God. Trinitarian theology teaches that God is community of persons( father, son, and holy spirit) and this community lives and breathes love. It was precisely this love that expanded from the trinity to create the universe. So, as vast as the universe is so also vast is the love of the divine. Scientists also tell us that the universe is continuing to grow and expand, which is also what we know God’s love to be, ever expanding!! In a nut shell this is why heaven never gets boring, to quote Peter Kreeft, " because true love only expands, it doesnt shrink or stagnate". Hope this helps!!

God made a large universe because He knew we’d be fasicnated by it. He knew we’d enjoy exploring the vastness that He has created. That’s how great He is, he didn’t make things all boring and simple, instead He made them so we could enjoy His creations, don’t you just love Him?

Wow! I’ve just sat here, on my lunch break, and read all of these posts for this thread and I’m intimidated by the knowledge of the people posting here. Some of these answers, conclusions and theories are beyond incredible. I’ve only been around this site for a short while and this may be the best of the best that I’ve read up to this point.
I suppose I’m very simple and can’t apply thought as well as most. And so, my imagination and thinking would take me to a simple conclusion based on the few things that I’ve heard and read over the years. (I thought someone may have had the same thought about this topic as I did, but…sigh…you guys are really bright)
Well, here goes; We all know that “Gods’ time is Gods’ time”. Soooo…what’s to say that His 10 minutes is not our 10 Billion years? And…some of us remember the old movies, "Buck Rogers starring Buster Crabbe in 1936. Well, when that came out at the ‘picture show’ you know people said to one another, “Boy, that’s way out there! No way that could ever happen!” So, a little over 30 years later, our time, men were walking on the moon.
Anyway, you guys are really smart so you know where I’m going with this. Now…Let’s move ahead to 2 days from now…“Gods’ time”…It’s now 100 Billion years later…our time…and now, we know how to ‘transport ourselves’ like Mr. Scott used to transport Capt. Kirk and Mr. Spock all around the Galaxy, only; at 100 times the speed of light…Let’s say God knew we would achieve this level of technology one day soon and because of our nature, to explore the unknown, to go where no man has ever gone before…remember these words?..

You could also ask why is the earth so large?

Perhaps the answer is the same.
The would appear to be just the right size for retention of an atmosphere, stable temperature ranges, ability for species diversification etc.
Perhaps the universe is just the right size to provide an earth as we know it.
Reading through the thread again… I really like this.

Wrong-O! The most distant galaxies are millions of light years away from us.
Not so.
Riding upon a light beam, you enter the universe of the light beam, and therein, you cover infinte distance in zero time.
Riding upon the light beam, you experience the universe as a singularity, for you perceive your velocity to be finite, yet you still traverse the entire universe in zero time.
This is called the Lorentz FitzGerald contraction, and is the essence of relativity.
