What exactly is the “Rapture”? Is it biblical? If so, where is it in the Bible?

If not, who came up with this idea, and what would I tell my Protestant friends who believe it to be true?
Seems to me this subject was thoroughly beaten to death several forums ago. The rapture or “catching up” is quite different from the 2nd coming. It was a mystery until revealed to the apostle to the Gentiles, Paul. Unfortunately, it is confused with the 2nd advent quite often. Many contrasts here -

Yes I think as you say the rapture is different from the Second Coming and the rapture will be before the Second Coming.

anglican - A simple question - do you believe that Jesus will return to the mount of olives as He promised.
Can you tell me where in the Bible that He actually said that is where He wil return??
From what I understand…it does say he will come down with the trumph blast and the dead in Christ will rise first…but down from Heaven does not mean …to earth. He will have a 1000 years reign…and peace will be the order of the day. It’s hard not reading something into a verse…but we are to take is as it is…not added to or taken from…

And when he had said this, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men [angels] stood by them in white robes, and said, ‘Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.’ Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath day’s journey away. (Acts 1:4-12).

I am not reading anything that is not quite clear - the whole Bible points to the 2nd coming of Jesus to the earth - to stay. Jesus will reign from Jerusalem after the battle of Armageddon .

Simon : And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south. Zechariah 14 : 4

The verse states simply "in that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives."We´re not told by Zechariah how He got to the Mount of Olives. Since we know that Jesus came to earth (John 1:14), and these events are described in the Old Testament, and Jesus did stand on the Mount of Olives, it´s logical to conclude that the reference to the Mount of Olives refers to Jesus´ first coming. Everyone is going to have a different take on what every verse in the Bible says. For me…I know He is coming back, the what, when and where is all in God’s timing…Jesus Himself said…only God knows the hour. I pray we all can not look so much at the things we disagree on but what we have in common…He is God…He is coming back and where He is…we will be with Him. And until that time, be at work doing His will…reaching out to what the world calls…the least of these…to me…we are all the least of these.

One day, maybe 10 or 15 years ago, I was home sick and put the TV on EWTN and dozed for a while. When I woke up, Living His Life Abundantly was on, and the program was about Apologetics, and the guests were talking about the Rapture phenomenon. I ordered the DVD of the program so that I could review it as I hadn’t caught the whole thing. One thing I have always remembered, though, was that a Catholic was primarily responsible for popularizing the idea with his writings, which were later grabbed onto by the Millennialists.

“Mather’s ideas were picked up a century later by Morgan Edwards who developed them in some of his sermons, but the real watershed moment for this heresy came from a Chilean Jesuit who published a book in 1812 entitled The Coming of the Messiah in Glory and Majesty. His name was Manuel Lacunza and he was the first to give impetus to the notion that Christians would escape the pain and suffering of the tribulation period prior to the end of the world. He wrote that Christians would be escape the last 45 days and be caught up in Christ. That was the foundation of the errant teaching about the rapture. Everything since then has been changes of smaller or greater degree.”

Zecharia is talking about an earthquake when Jesus returns to the mount of olives.
Just because it is OT does not mean it is the first coming which was in the stable.

The timing of the rapture is unknown - but there is in scripture - a rapture .

Three minutes after I posted my last post, charles allan asks whether East Anglican “not believe in the millennial reign of Jesus?” It is obvious that he did not even “look” at the contents.
My reply is: No! I do not believe in the Millenium (as claimed by non-Catholics! )

This is what Dr. Leslie Rumble, MSC wrote in his Vol. 1 RADIO REPLIES on the Millenium:
(cf. http://jloughnan.tripod.com/radrepvol1.htm and the consolidated Index to all 5 Volumes at http://jloughnan.tripod.com/indexx.htm )

The Millenium****
917. I believe that all men will get a second chance. Christ said, “Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” At some future time on earth there will be a kingdom in which God’s will must prevail.
The kingdom of Christ is already in this world, though not of it. That kingdom is two-fold, perfect in heaven, imperfect on earth. We pray that God’s kingdom of grace may be extended in the souls of men, and that they may so fulfill the will of God that they may attain that final happiness of the kingdom of heaven. But the words you quote in no way refer to another temporary state, or to any second chance.
918. When Christ comes again, will He not teach and rule us?
When Christ comes again it will be to judge mankind, not to teach and rule us in this world. He has put His Church on earth to do the teaching, and if men will not listen it is their own fault. Now is the time of our probation and we must make good use of the present life instead of relying upon future opportunities for preparation.
919. Did not Christ promise that we should reign on earth with Him for a thousand years, and that during this Millenium Satan would be bound?
That has no reference to a further probation on this earth. The thousand years are to be interpreted in the Hebrew sense of a long and indefinite period of time. Even to-day we say, “I could listen to such music for a week,” without intending precisely seven days. The thousand years refer to the long period between the advent of Christ and the end of the world. The supply of grace is more plentiful and God’s mercy more copious, so that Satan’s power is truly diminished. And those who, for the love of Christ, have learned to rise above things of earth and live for God truly reign with Christ.
920. St. John tells us, “Blessed is he that hath part in the first resurrection. In these the second death hath no power.” Rev. XX., 6.
The first resurrection is the mystical resurrection from the death of sin. We rise with Christ in Baptism, and those who die still retaining the grace of their baptismal rebirth possess a permanent title to the glorious second and actual resurrection of the body at the last day. On such as these the second death will have no effect. The first death is the dissolution of soul and body. The second death is the eternal living death of hell.

Sean - do you believe that Jesus will return to earth ?

If you believe this where does Jesus return to ?

What does Jesus do when he returns ?

The millienium in scripture is not a symbolic 1000 yrs. There are two resurrections :-

When Jesus returns at the start of the millenium to reign for 1000 yrs

The great white throne judgement at the end of the 1000 yrs.

But surely every Christian must know about this incredibly important event - the return of Jesus to the Mount of Olives. He stays in his temple in Jerusalem to reign forever.
What priest could disagree ? Satan is bound in the abyss for one thousand years.
At the end of the 1000 yrs satan is loosed for a little while to tempt those who want to reject
the Lord’s reign - they are destroyed by fire and the new heaven and earth is created for eternity.
Jesus does not return and then go away again .

If you dont think the millenial reign is true then do you think things will stay static forever ?
1 Corinthians 3:16
Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?

Ephesians 2:19-21
19 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. 21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord.

The temple that he dwells in is his church. The vial has been torn.

I hold to the view held by the majority of theologians down through the centuries, both Catholic and Protestant. It is known as amillenialism. Jesus is reigning from heaven NOW, and that is the millenium. At the end Satan is loosed to deceive the nations and then comes the Second Coming and the Last Judgement. I do believe that Jesus will rule from a renewed Earth- the New Earth. But that is the Eternal Kingdom, not the Millenium. Read the writings of Augustine, Aquinas, John Calvin, etc. and they are ALL amillenial in their view. Calvin went so far as to call premillanillism “Jewish fables”. I gave up the popular pretrib view decades ago and do not regret having seen the truth as taught by the Church since the earliest Fathers.

I don’t subscribe to the pre trib view since no one knows when the rapture will happen - but
I don’t see anything in scripture which says the 1000 yr reign is symbolic of the present age
  • it is quite clear to me anyway that it is a future event where Jesus returns to the Mt of Olives
and reigns for 1000 yrs with a rod of iron. This is a sabbath rest of 1000 yrs where the lion will lie down with the lamb.

You are entitled to believe that if you want, and there have been premillinial thinkers in the Catholic church. But the majority of the church does not accept that view. Even the majority of the early Protestants didn’t accept that view, and that shows how much closer they were to the Catholic understanding then todays “prophecy experts”.

I can only say if you believe that Jesus will return to earth - which is what Christians are all waiting for - then you have to believe that Jesus will reign on the earth from Jerusalem.

Jesus was on the Mount of Olives before the crucifixion. From there he went into Jerusalem and delivered his people by dying for them and rising again.

Jesus is reigning over all now and the church is reigning with him. (Ephesians 1:22-23)

Thr premilleniel heresy is not allowing you to see the eschatological reality that what Christ and his church shall be for eternity they are now.

Jesus is Lord of all now.

Amen and Amen. Jesus is reigning now and we are in that period between the First and Second Advents when His reign is advancing over the earth. All things are under His control and leading to the Last Day when He will return and judge the living and the dead. Amen

East Anglican - does this mean that you think Jesus does not return to earth and stays in Heaven forever ?
