Wow…now you are the ideal Catholic aren’t you? BTW, have you heard about the sin of pride?
I answered a direct question, I was taught matters to answer civil questions.

Did I ever say I was ideal? I am a sinner, I have nothing but the mercy of God.

I’m glad to see you feel free to judge others for having different views than you. I won’t ask if you’re protestant because it might be insulting to God fearing protestants.
I have judged no person. We are required by Scripture and by Tradition to judge actions and to determine what is truth and what is falsehood.

It is hysterical how the current “vogue” thing is to accuse someone of “judging me” if that person disagrees.

I disagree with you, I have posted from Scripture and Tradition to back up my beliefs. Should you have authorititive sources to back up your assertions, please, post them.

If I chose of my own free will to reject Christ by breaking His commandment, be it murdering a child or sitting on my sofa instead of going to Mass, I am choosing hell.

Why would I want to spend eternity with someone who I’d not spend an hour at Mass with?
Why would you want to spend an eternity with satan instead?

I think intentional homicide of a human being with malice (i.e. the aim to do the most evil to that person, aggravated if accompanied by hate) is probably the worst sin and most soul-destroying sin a person can do. I think intentional rape or sexual abuse of someone innocent (i.e. a child, disabled person, or vulnerable victim) is also way up there. I think there are lots of other ways a person can become corrupted, including through greed, scandal, warped upbringing (i.e. taught to accept slavery or hate minorities), etc. I think the weight attached to some sexual acts is too great (I don’t think masturbation for example is as horrible an act as the Catholic Church makes it to be) but I still think mortal sin exists in sex acts like intentional rape or sexual abuse. I also think the lust for power is extremely corrupting and people often underestimate the corrupting effects of power, whether it occurs in the secular or religious sphere.

No, you never say it outright…you don’t have to. You make a point of showing others up. You present Catholic teaching with a know-it-all attitude rather than with compassion and understanding. You jump to conclusions and refuse to apologize when you have gone over the line.

If someone dares to question Church teaching, they are branded “Protestant” or better yet a Catholic Church basher. In other words, they aren’t as good a Catholic as you are because you don’t question. Well, you know what? I was once where you are. I once thought as you thought and behaved much like you do…and now I see the error of my ways…how arrogant I was.

Could you please show me where Jesus said this?
Well…I believe that since we are human and cannot be worthy of God…He expects us to do the best that we can. If you think otherwise…I think you are giving your personal humanity more credit that it deserves.

Hmmm…seems as though you’re crossing many people in this thread. You’ve got to realize we can’t all be perfect as you. 🙂

Sigh - to identify “IDEAS” as “protestant or atheistic or relativisitic or pagan or jewish” is not branding, it is what debate sounds like.

It is different than stooping to an ad hom attack, sadly, that is where you have gone here.

Example “when you say that we are saved by sola fide, you sound like a protestant”. That is identification of the philosophy/theology behind the idea that was presented.

Contrary “you are arrogant and think you are better than everyone, you are judging me” - that is an ad hom attack and is something that usually comes from the immature or those who are uneducated.

Ad homs are not permitted on this board.

If you want to criticize the idea not the person, you would say instead:
“when you say that we are saved by sola fide, that sounds like a protestant idea

Huge difference in meaning and tone.

And there you go again! I wish I were perfect too.

What happens if he dies after repenting…but before being to the sacrament of reconciliation. Jesus was not legalistic. If he was…then you had better sell all you own and give it to the poor and follow him. That’s legalism! BTW…if you do that…we won’t be able to chat…so keep your pc! 🙂
i virtually HAVE given up “all” my possessions … and the ones i have left… well, i try 2 use them 4 the spreading of the gospel & other causes…

legalism gets a bad name… Why would someone be against legitimate authority… unless that person just wnats 2b free to do whatever… but we ARE free to do wahtever… we are free 2 do anything but sin…

not as “easy” as it sounds, but whatever… sometimes we DO have to give up certian things in order to keep sinning. If your foot causes u to stumble, cut it off… cast it from u…

anyhow… i don’t have internet @ home… so nothing to give up there…

That’s what I tried to answer in post 63 😊.

Attending Sunday Mass is very important to our salvation. Knowing this, the Church has required Catholics to attend on that day, for their own good, using the authority of binding that Christ gave her. The Church speaks with the authority of Christ the King. The bishops are His representatives on Earth.

If a man knows that the Church has authoritatively required Catholics to attend Mass each Sunday, and he knows what this authority is and means, then by refusing, he is rejecting the command of Christ. This is putting his will above the will of God in a matter of grave importance to salvation, with full knowledge of what he is doing.

Being inside the Kingdom of God is being united with God. Rebelling against God’s commands is separating oneself from God. So by putting his will above the will of God, the man separates himself from the Kingdom and places himself and his temporary desires above God and His eternal desires for the man’s good.

So the man has damned himself unless he truly, from his heart, repents.

A lifetime of good doesn’t make up for one mortal sin because of the nature of that sin. However, I will add that I suspect many Catholics who would do such a thing are probably not fully aware of how serious what they are doing is, so they may not have “full knowledge” and may not be guilty of mortal sin.

Someone who goes to a ball game instead of Mass without knowing how serious that is may very well not go to Hell. He may not have full knowledge of the Church’s teachings on the matter.

But a mortal sin is always enough to destroy a person, no matter how much good the person did before, if it really, truly is mortal. For a sin to be truly mortal, it must be concerning a very serious issue, it must be committed with full knowledge of the Church’s teachings and of how wrong is one’s action, and it must be committed freely. I think most people who would choose a ball game above obedience to the Church probably don’t have full knowledge of the Church’s teachings, but if they do, they are separating themselves from God by choosing rebellion against His authority. For when they reject the Church’s authority, they are rejecting God’s authority, and when they put themselves above the Church, they are putting themselves above God.
excellent post… 🙂

i would add this: anyone who thinks a ball game is more important than Jesus (not to mention more importnat than being w/ all the angels & saints who all participate at the Mass) is one sick puppy… but we hope he is sick out of ignorance… not because he wants to do whatever he wants… & rejects Christ…

people who miss Mass becaues thye think something else is more important… well, again, they are likely ignornat… and even tho ignorance is somewhate excusable… They are still missing out… Big time…

& they r making it easier for them to rationalize other sins until… one day they may wake up & not have much of a concience left… Again, i feel this kind of thing is more commong than people realize…

Now that is absolutely true. Missing Mass for a sporting event or secular activity that is “for fun” is sad. But hopefully it is out of ignorance. I wouldn’t want to be at the gate of heaven someday and be told…" Gee…I know you had a great time watching the Red Sox sweep the Yankees in double header on Sunday 7/26/2020…but you should have been at Mass. AND you never confessed the sin! Hmmm…join the crowd at the bar downstairs! 😊

i think it would be more like this:

God: You loved ball games more than Me? Why? Those ball players didn’t even know u were there… much less did they know you as a friend… much less did they love u enough to die for you… They were not the ones who could heal you of the awful effects of your sinfulness… & your need for true & lasting love…

so, since u have chosen to be in that same place (as u had on Earth), a place of No Real Love…

i meant to say Keep FROM sinning… 😃

I think (I hope) you are missing the point of the story. It was one missed Mass in a lifetime of following the Church. Is someone going to hell for one, unrepented missed Mass in that situation?
As I posted earlier, my priest says no way. I’ll listen to him.

Ah, the irony.
