Ps.4

[0] To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments. A Psalm of David.
[1] Answer me when I call, O God of my right!
Thou hast given me room when I was in distress.
Be gracious to me, and hear my prayer.
[2] O men, how long shall my honor suffer shame?
How long will you love vain words, and seek after lies? [Selah]
[3] But know that the LORD has set apart the godly for himself;
the LORD hears when I call to him.
[4] Be angry, but sin not;
commune with your own hearts on your beds, and be silent. [Selah]
[5] Offer right sacrifices,
and put your trust in the LORD.
[6] There are many who say, “O that we might see some good!
Lift up the light of thy countenance upon us, O LORD!”
[7] Thou hast put more joy in my heart
than they have when their grain and wine abound.
[8]** In peace I will both lie down and sleep;
for thou alone, O LORD, makest me dwell in safety.
**

If your doctor has said you’re fine, and the panic attacks continue (which would indicate their origin is unnatural), then have a priest perform an exorcism on you. You don’t need to be possessed to be exorcised. The rite of exorcism will drive away any demonic influence over or in you. If you have not spoken to a doctor, then I highly advise you to do so, because the panic attacks might just be a medical condition.

Many saints had to undergo exorcism, and some because they were actually possessed. Demons possess and obsess over those holy people they hate the most. (This is not to be confused with those people who have given themselves over to Satan’s power - and so, become possessed by him - by committing such sins as occultism, desiring private revelations, and giving to Satan what only belongs to God)

Please pray for me, I am so afraid, I don’t know what’s wrong! 😦

I keep having panic attacks lately, and for no apparent reason. I’m having one right now. I tried going to sleep, my wife and I, she was reading her prayer book and I my St. Anthony’s Magazine, then she fell asleep, and I tried, but EVERY time I would doze off I was afraid I would stop breathing, my heart would race, and I would feel frightened. I hate our bedroom, it’s where I keep having them. She’s asleep so I won’t bother her, but I’m going to sleep in our living room, or at least lie on the couch and put on a DVD to comfort me. I’m going to put on a movie about St. Francis of Assisi, it’s comforting and hopefully may soothe me.

But why is this happening? Am I being plauged by demons for my past sins? I haven’t slept well in weeks because of it. I’m so tired, but can’t fall alseep at night, ESPECIALLY in that room and I want cry right now from frustration? Why do I get scared? There’s nothing for me to worry about? What is wrong with me? Please please help. 😦
I suggest you consult with a sleep specialist. You have the classic symptoms of sleep apnea, a common and vastly under-diagnosed condition. (I have it myself, and have been through *exactly *what you’re experiencing.)

If I’m right, it’s not demons; it’s not guilt; it’s not unconscious self-punishment. When you fall asleep, your throat muscles relax, blocking your airway. Your brain gets starved of oxygen and wakes you up with the message that something is very, very wrong. And yes, it can trigger panic attacks. This is what happened to me; I was convinced I was having a heart attack and went to the emergency room; luckily the doc there knew enough about sleep apnea to give me a preliminary diagnosis.

I strongly advise you to get this checked out. You’ll feel better, sleep better, and if indeed it turns out that you are chronically sleep-deprived, maybe a lot of things in life will get better.

Good luck!

Did you have problems before you dwelt into other deities and other things? What kind of other things?

Most people are not aware of the spiritual realm where both demons and angels inhabit. This is real and seemingly innocent curiosity can get you into serious trouble. I have had first hand experience with evil entities and it is not pleasant. You might need to have a good general confession and also do research on spiritual warfare if your problems persist. You might need deliverance. It appears that going to confession has not healed the problem.

Have you seen the Exorcism of Emily Rose? It is based on a true story.

My advice is to stay away from the fantasy fascination or any other occultic, false religion practices, New Age teachings. Stay close to Jesus and the Church where there is safety.

St. Michael defend us in battle…
The Exorcism of Emily Rose is one of my favorite movies, but Emily had nothing to do with the occult or was involved into fantasy book/games (which I do not think is wrong, depending on certain instances, niether does the Church, but thanks you dear sister for the concern) Emily, in the movie, was chosen to be inflicted by the demonic to bring about more people to God, opening up their closed hearts to the spirit world.

You need to look at this from two angles and then see how they might be connected.
Obviously, the first is spiritual and many of the previous postings have given fine suggestions of what you might need to do. Secondly, I encourage you to speak with your family MD or internist about having a “sleep study” done. This can determine if you have sleep apnea or night terrors.

Now, should the medical testing show that you have a sleep disorder, by all means follow through with the treatment, but also follow through with the spiritual part, as well. If you have some demons pestering you, they are going to “get you where they can” and untreated medical conditions are a fine one for them to attack.
It happens mainly whenever I stay up past 8:30 P.M. and *know *I have to wake up early. And ESPECIALLY if I’ve been debating or thinking and thinking of sometime that past day. My mind races. Then, just as I’m falling into a sleep, my heart races a tad, my breathing “feels” or I just “think” it does, feels contricted for a brief moment and I get up, then I feel frightened, sometimes REALLY frightened for no apparent reason.

I read up and discovered having severe cases of OCD can trigger panic attacks. I have OCD to the extreme and am wondering if this is the prime cause.

I do not take medicine for my condition. I used to, but stopped. I don’t want to be dependent on meds all my life which may not be doing anything to help except damage my liver. Also, what if I were to get better? What if I were to be free of OCD? The thought brings tears, but would I be humble any longer toward Him? By giving me this “condition” I have become humble, have entered into deep conversations with Him, and have grown more relaxed and slow to anger. I think I needed this “disorder” to get me there. I have been through severe horrific emotional wars, and if anyone else has OCD in the extreme case, you know what I mean, don’t you?

I don’t want to run away from God, I don’t want my past attitude of haughtyness and easy to anger and overwhelming selfish pride to return, so I am comdemned to having OCD for the rest of my life in order to keep me on my knees bfore our Lord, and I perfer it that way.

But the sleep condition is another thing. I finally got to sleep and slept like a babe so thank you all for your prayers. Before I woke up I was dreaming I was walking beside an Amish man having long conversations but can not remember what those conversations were.

I will take all thewords of wisdom from everyone and put them into consideration.

God bless you all and thanks. hugs everybody 🙂

Oh no! I desire private revelations DAILY! I really enjoy reading about them, and wonder how I would have feel having one. I want one for ONE reason: to feel immensely close to God, feel His fire of love, and be engulfed by it, and to do whatever He commands.

Is this wrong???😦

Here is a Catholic website that deals with spiritual warfare:

There is power in the name of Jesus!
Thank you Kathy for all you have offered. one of the most beautiful things is the love we Christians share! :o

Regarding fantasy, I found a link and this is how I take it: catholic.com/thisrock/2001/0107fea1.asp

In my story there is a scene where Darshun is having a conversation with the Lord of Ashhaven (Ashhaven being an elvish city) Lord Athanasius. Darshun is amazed at the “magic” of the Elves, and is reproached by Athanasius for having such superstitious thoughts, rather, the “magic” is not some hocus-pocus mumbo jumbo, but a natural complex bodily make-up system in every creature of my world, except those who practice sorcery, which is forbidden for those belonging to the Light.

The only TRUE magic having no explanation in my story is the God of the Light, Abidan.

You may want to try some relaxation exercises and maybe look into self hypnosis. You may have developed a phobia vs sleep, associating sleep with dying or other fears.

I happen to have sleep apnea but a moderate case of it. I have never had problems falling asleep, my problem is I don’t get enough sleep or the sleep I do get, is not quality or enough deep REM sleep to give me enough rest.

People who have sleep apnea actually stop breahing for short periods of time. It is usually accompanied by very loud snoring. The back of the tongue or some other part blocks the breathing passage and vibrates, sometimes blocking the breathing completely.

There are clinics to properly diagnose the severity of the problem. Usually people who have sleep apnea have no problem falling asleep becuase they are always tired. Most times they have problems staying awake, making it dangerous for them on long drives. People who have sever cases will fall asleep without them knowing it or with very little warning, this can easily cause accidents, and they need treatment or maybe an operation (the operation doesn’t always work. Treatment with a C-PAP machine or dental device is usually recommended)

It sounds like your sleep problem is more psychosomatic. Your fear of falling asleep is causing more anxiety and this causes you to focus more on your problem in a vicious cycle. Anyone who associates sleep with dying will of course try to stay awake as long as possible.

One good way to dispell this fear, is to say a few simple prayers just as you lay down. A good sincere act of contrition, is what I say to start. No one should fear death, if they know they are right with God. If I know I’m tired one Our Father, one Hail May and a glory be is more than enough. IF I’m not particularly tired I start a Rosary.

On days I am particularly anxious or I have had a rough day and my mind is cluttered, I do a relaxation exercise before or as I am praying.

I focus on relaxing, and either think of some thing pleasant or try to clear my mind completely. A good techniques is to focus on each muscle group (neck, each arm and hand, each leg and feet) in turn, tighten them for a few seconds, and release, feeling the release of tension. Feel yourself sinking into the bed, feeling more relaxed with each tightening and release. IF at the end, any area still feels tense, tighten and relax that area again. Try to breath slowly and deeply as you do this. Don’t hold a breath too long or force anything.

I only do this when I have trouble sleeping because of anxiety at work or something is bothering me. Normally I am so tired I am out like a rock after a short prayer or two. .

One thing that we should be aware of is, that sleep and bed time is a time for review and renewal. We have such busy lives that often times we forget all about God until we stop to relax. Before we go to sleep, we need to says thanks Lord for the blessings that we have, forgive me Lord for what I failed to do and the sins I’ve commited, protect me and my family Lord from evil and keep us safe, and don’t forget to let me win the lottery tomorrow. 😃

We know that sleep in necessary for our bodies to function properly. But if we focus on our problems and our fears, then sleep will become a problem rather than a help. I love sleep, I love to take naps and I look forward to night time every day. There is no fear or problem that can keep me up at night. IF I were to die in my sleep, I know I am right with God. I leave my problems up to God. Whatever happens will happen. I will do my best and whatever the outcome, I am happy with that.

IF God leads your life, what do you care what the outcome will be. Let God worry about the future. The day has already taken care of itself, whatever happened is over and there is nothing you can do about it anyway. Night time is the time to relax and to me there is nothing easier than relaxing. Sleep is God’s greatest gift to mankind, enjoy it. Sleep is wonderful, sleep is FREE, sleep is super EZZZZZZZZZZZZZ…someone turn off the lights zzzzz.😛

I only mentioned The Exorcism of Emily Rose because it deals with the reality of the demonic. Many people do not understand or believe in the possibility of being possessed or oppressed by demons. Jesus and his disciples dealt with it all the time and it still goes on. I know someone who played Quija board and levitation games innocently as a child. This person was possessed by the devil. I saw it, I heard them and saw many manifestations of them. Obsessive thoughts and fear of germs were one of the manifestations. Medication did not help. Ativan worked temporarily but it is a very expensive medication, is highly addictive and requires larger doses after continual use.

There are many different ways evil spirits can enter our lives, such as trauma, life wounds, inheritance, spells, curses, etc. In the RCC, a prayer of exorcism is said at Baptism and the Church use to perform more exorcisms that it does now.

Our culture is so lenient, permissive and infiltrated with demonic influences that have become acceptable. Many Christians participate with evil by watching inappropriate TV, movies, music, novels, magazines and ungodly relationships. We are to live a holy life but unfortunately, this is not spoken enough of. Even at Mass, we see people dressed horribly while partaking the Holy Eucharist. We are to come out of the world and its practices.

I do think that cognitive therapy is helpful if it is just a case of incorrect thinking patterns. Controlling our thoughts is a battle because the battle is in the mind. This takes self discipline. I pray to Jesus to help me control my thoughts. I ask for the mind of Christ. I listen to Christian music and give praise to the Lord. I practice the opposite of what negative thoughts suggest. If I have trouble sleeping, I quote scriptures that have to do with sleep. It works most of the time.

I do not think your condition is from God. I sensed from reading your first post that it is caused by your curiosity with fantasy and occult practices.

You are in my prayers. May the Lord Jesus Christ wrap His loving arms around you and heal you.

Jesus is the answer.

I agree that you should see your doctor, but in the meantime you might try taking B-complex supplements. I take them for slight depression and for anxiety issues. The company I go through is called Shaklee, you can look it up online. You might still need to take meds too but I have found the supplements to be a massive help to me. Good luck!

Dearist sister in the Lord, thank you for your prayers and concerns, I appriciate them greatly. But I have to say I still disagree with you on a few aspects, fantasy for one.

I understand your concern with fantasy and used to hold the same view when I was Protestant, but interestingly enough, my OCD was already in effect, even before i read any fantasy. In fact, coming to God INCREASED much of the condition, giving me a scruples way of thinking. So I can say, had I never came to God, I wouldn’t have had or have such a severe case of OCD. I can tell you first hand that MANY heavenly spiritual things enhanced it.

I do not approve of certain fantasy, I agree there are many that are extremely and PURPOSELY anti-Christian, but not all. For the positive side I am speaking of Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings,” C.S. Lewis’ “Chronicles of Narnia” and his “Space Trilogy,” along with Susan Cooper’s “The Dark is Rising” and Madeline Howard’s “Rune of Unmaking” and many more. There are many moral issues and spiritual parallels in these novels that we can see and become influenced by—for the better! They’re not stories thought up by demons, such ideas for me seem so absurd, no pun intended dearist sister.

My novel is similar, in fact, the entire story is symbolic to the walk of a Christian’s life and what he/she faces, the battles and struggles, hopes and failings, etc. In fact, there is a scene strikingly similar to what took place in the early church days upon becoming a Christian and seeing and taking in the Eucharist the very first time.

You can use that “Satan is the author” saying on everything non-Christian, but is he the author of every single non-Christian story? I do not believe such a thing at all. Niether is there any harm in learning about another faith such as Islam, Judaism or even Buddhistism. If we didn’t know what they taught, how could we defend against them when they come knocking at our door demanding us to convert? I even hold respect for other faiths. I do not believe them, but I can respect *some *of them.

So my point is, just because something is not about the greatest story ever told, Jesus the Christ, or any other event and character in the Bible, does not make it satanic. Quija boards, tarot cards, and actual real life magic spell are a definite no! no! because those who use such things believe they can bring in power from the spiritual world, and those who use them for “fun” not really believing in it, well, that’s like a child playing with a loaded gun not meaning to fire it. It might go off, it might not. Point is, such things like that I agree are dangerous. But I trust the Church when she says there are certain stories and myths and fantasy which the laymen can read and it is not sin.

My OCD, i also believe, is from God. If it’s from Satan, then I have Satan to thank, because it has made me EXTREMELY more humble to God, it has eradicated SO MUCH of my haughty past pride and brought me further on my knees before the Lord, and I am slower to anger than I used to be. Mostly though, it has weakened my pride, and pride is the center of all sins. It hurts, at times really REALLY REALLY hurts! But so does Purgatory, or so WILL Purgatory. Suffering is something we must go through to be purified so that we stand before our Bridegroom unspoiled and completely clean, ready for Him to take us into His “bed.” 🙂

I admit, if I were not married, i’d probably give up ALL earthly attachments and become a fransician, and live in a monestary. St. Francis has attracted me more than any other saint, and there was a time I really REALLY wanted to imitate the way he lived because it is so much easier to cling to God that way. But, I am married, and cannot do the things my spirit sometimes desires because I have a bride to care for and love, and I do love her.

God bless you Kathy dearist sister in the Lord. 🙂

Dear Catholic, Its not good for you to be sleep-deprived. What you’re experiencing could be either medical or spiritual or both. When I have trouble sleeping I try to take a brisk walk every day . It can be a great aid in helping you to sleep. Another thing you can do if under spiritual attack is slowly repeat the name of Jesus. As the song says " Theres Power in the Name of Jesus " Thirdly, you can go to the Cross of Jesus and take the panic attacks and lay them at the foot of the Cross. Remind Jesus that the Bible [Isaiah 53:5] states that by His bruises we have been healed " Thank Jesus for what He has done for us and for setting you free . Leave the panic attacks there at the Cross where they have been dealt with. And get a good night’s sleep. PS Is there some problem with that particular room ?

Hi, I just wanted to let you know that it is not some form of punishment. It is anxiety and panic attacks. There is an issue of TRUST to a certain degree that if you don’t have any and are taking the reins in something that is completely out of your ability to control, even if you are’t consciously aware of anything getting to you in that way, you can and will become anxious, fearful and uncertain and it will or can just escalate to what you are experiencing.
Like the other post said, also OCD, Scrupulosity, Pride are all related and usually in some degree larger at times than others to lack of Trust. Anxiety and Panic are medical.
The Jesus Prayer is a definately proven prayer that helps to settle and relax…and as mentioned earlier, THE MOST POWERFUL NAME.
I breath in…Jesus Christ Son of the Living God…then blow out Have Mercy on me a sinner. In with the good and out with the bad…
In focusing on the words and the intake and blowing out…you soon, will be slowing down your breathing, heart etc. without trying. When I try to breath slow by thinking about breathing slow, it becomes very labored. I also know that even though I often don’t get off my rear and practice what I preach, WALKING, and doing the Jesus Prayer help alot. Hot bath too, and you can pray in the tub. Pray ceaslesly.
I also reccomend you go ahead and get some blessed salt and Holy Water, going through the house, marking all the doors with Holy Water sign of cross, praying In the name of F. S. H.S. and you can do the same with Blessed Salt and if you need to look up a prayer to say…(I would just do a shorter one) but you know how to pray and ask for protection and claim the blood of Christ for yourself and your family.
I find if I’m having some wierd experience with ickky people or ? saying and from the heart (it really improves my faith too) I CLAIM THE BLOOD OF JESUS WHO DIED FOR ME…HIS BLOOD IS FOR ME, HIS BLOOD WAS SHED FOR ME, I AM HIS AND HE IS MINE. Something like that.
We had at one parish for the Epiphany time of year hand outs, of holy water, and incense and a prayer card and you got your own branch and blessed your home with the whole family following in prayer or responding Amen .
This too shall pass, but I totally understand and know how scary, frustrating and just irritating to have it happen… I sleep with my rosary all the time, out of habit now, but I had a time when everytime I layed down the room would spin, and only if I held the rosary could I get to sleep and the spining stop. Turned out to be an inner ear infection diagnosed about 2 years later. Pick up your weapon…THE ROSARY
Mary wrap your mantle of love and protection and peace around him and hold him as you do Jesus and let him move on past this issue as soon as possible. Amen

Thanks. The room is fine, there are spiritual books, rosaries, and a huge crucifix on the wall. The reason I don’t like the room, probably, is because I just don’t like the night. The only time I like night is when with my friends around fires chatting. Other than that, night ha salways felt lonely to me for the last 7 or 8 years. And it’s quiet, still, even though my wife is next to me. Actually, it wasn’t was bad when our dogs used to sleep in there, it didn’t feel so lonely cause the “family” was all together 😃 but melissa wants them out and I don’t blame her, we need at least one room without fur. Though it still feels lonely at times. Then I begin thinking about all the suffering that goes on in the world, because of sin, then I think of those not knowing the Lord, then about my family who have problems right now, and I get sad.

I’m a pessimist, I know, and I’m sorry. I try to focus on the good, but it’s hard. Last night I said part of a rosary, then feel fast alseep, nice and calm.

So thanks for the advice, thank all of you very much my dear brothers and sisters in the Lord. 🙂

Well first off, I suggest you see a doctor. Even if you would assume this is a manifestation of the demonic and go see a priest, he’ll say the same thing. It’s always best to seek a rational explanation before delving into the supernatural. Secondly, perhaps it might have also something to do with where you’re living since you seem to experience this with more intensity in this room you’re talking about. I don’t want to make crazy assumptions but let’s just say the older a house is, it’ll tend to have… a history.

Oh no! I desire private revelations DAILY! I really enjoy reading about them, and wonder how I would have feel having one. I want one for ONE reason: to feel immensely close to God, feel His fire of love, and be engulfed by it, and to do whatever He commands.

Is this wrong???😦
Yes. Confess what you’ve been doing each day in Confession.

If you wish to be close to God, love Him, be loved by Him, and do whatever He commands, I recommend you visit Jesus in the Tabernacle each day. Spend as much time with You as you can - if only five minutes, than five minutes; if only a few seconds, than only a few seconds. Tell Jesus EVERYTHING: Your life, your worries, your hopes, your wants, your needs, your fears, your sins, your virtues, your family and friends, your struggles, your victories, etc. Though He is God and knows everything, nevertheless He wishes to hear everything from your lips, because you are, to Him, His Lover, since God is Love; so speak to Him as a lover to a lover. Trust in Jesus, and ask Him for every redemptive and sanctifying grace, including the graces which no one else will accept from Him. He is willing to give all of them to you, for His Heart literally burns with love for souls, and the more His Mercy can penetrate into souls, the more His Heart is comforted as It aches for souls.
