Really? They did?
You have to remember, it was a several dissent priests who convinced the Kennedys that they could be personally against abortion but politically support it. JFK and RFK were not theologians or more devout Catholics than the rest of the family. So it’s easy to assume that the dissenting priests would have been able to convince Jack & Bobby too. After all, if the priests convinced their mother, I’m sure Jack & Bobby would have fallen in line, just like Ted did.I disagree. First off, I don’t think that the whole abortion debate would’ve reared it’s ugly head because the instability that Kennedy’s assassination provided would be absent.
Because Father Drinan and Cardinal Cushing were advising them.Well then why weren’t the Kennedys excommunicated?
“CHRISTIAN, n. One who believes that the New Testament is a divinely inspired book admirably suited to the spiritual needs of his neighbor. One who follows the teachings of Christ in so far as they are not inconsistent with a life of sin.” - “The Devil’s Dictionary”, Ambrose Bierce
I don’t deny the difficulty of living a true Christian life, but this is not a modern phenomenon. Saint Paul wrote about it in Corinthians:“I don’t reject your Christ. I love your Christ. It is just that so many of you Christians are so unlike your Christ.” - attributed to Ghandi (but there is no original evidence for it).
“I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought. My brothers and sisters, some from Chloe’s household have informed me that there are quarrels among you. What I mean is this: One of you says, “I follow Paul”; another, “I follow Apollos”; another, “I follow Cephas”; still another, “I follow Christ.” Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized in the name of Paul?” - 1 Corinthians 1:10-13
Depends on what part of the East you are talking about. In Russia, the Eastern Orthodox Church has grown stronger and stronger with support from President Vladimir Putin. In 1988, there were 6000 Russian Orthodox parishes in Russia, whereas today there are more than 36000, or an increase of 600%. Recently the top news item on Russian state television was the fact that President Putin was commemorating the baptism of Christ. With temperatures of minus 30 degrees Celsius, Putin made the sign of the cross and jumped into a cross shaped hole cut into the icy waters of Lake Seliger. What is wrong with the west?
Embracing the East and influenced by its culture and values.
