What is your favorite bird? And every fowl encounter you've had under the sun

All these hundreds of birds have such beautiful markings. I wonder what atheists chalk all this diversity and beauty up to in the bird species.

Or even just the idea that humans perceive beauty. Maybe animals do, too? I tend to doubt that animals posses a notion of beauty. That in itself would tend to raise an eyebrow if I were an atheist.

(I’ll take a dozen of these sprinter birds of yours, how much are they?)

I cannot speak for atheists on this issue, but I share with them the belief that the diversity in nature came about through natural means. Where I differ from them is that I stand in awe of the Creator who gave nature the sure means to accomplish it.

As for animals perceiving beauty, we may speculate that animals can appreciate and desire things that enhance their survival or the survival of their kind. An individual animal might perceive a healthy and fit mate, or a good source of food, water, or shelter. Are they appreciating beauty, or only utility? Some birds and other animals collect shiny or colorful objects which are of no obvious utility to their survival. Are they appreciating beauty?

My husband raised the Macaw from an egg, and it’s about 35 yrs old. We’ve been married 5 years and I am still not used to it. It’s outside in an expensive heated shed. Screams wickedly, sounding like a giant 50 foot Crow. Is equally inclined to be nice or try to bite your face. Has an extensive vocabulary, some of it is bad swearing.
He isn’t allowed to fly, so when his wings grow out my husband clips them short. It’s pitiful, because with wings grown out the Macaw is so majestic - meant to fly miles every day. But to keep imprisoned as a domestic but not domesticated specimen, wings get clipped. No wonder the screams and lunging to bite.

Perhaps he’s more suited to a tough old pirates shoulder 🤔 I wonder would your husband ever consider donating the bird to a wildlife sanctuary,or a zoo with a huge aviary?

I have heard that they like bobbles. Probably would have a hey day at a second hand shops.

Wow, I guess your husband would be a little bit upset if you gave it a passport and safe harbor out of the country. 🙂

The beauty of creation is what kept me from being a full blown atheist. Romans 1:20 tells us that we can tell something about the creator by the creation. As an artist it’s really hard to escape.

I think birds do have the same sense of beauty that we do. That’s why we’re attracted to them and they’re attracted to each other. What’s amazing me about painting them is how their coloring follows natural color theory, Though very beautiful, they can be painted very simply with very few colors

I whistled your pattern a few times and thought your subject bird really might be a song sparrow. Another suspect would be Bewick’s Wren. They have songs with three parts with a lot of variety.

Here’s a photo of a Song Sparrow singing in the rain at Tualatin NWR in Oregon.

Marvelous place.(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

Wild Turkey with small chicks (early July in Massachusetts). They were some distance away, so the picture is not as clear as we might like.

How naughty of them. See. Another example of God having a quirky sense of humor.

Never met a bird I didn’t like.

(Well, except for the one that won’t shut up. (parakeets anyone), the one that does its business on your head, and let’s see…the one that pecks you on the head, though I doubt the latter happens very often.)

Don’t care much for cultures or crows though.
