Thinking about seagulls, there’s certainly no shortage of them here

They’re everywhere!

They even come to church

Did you ever notice that when Jesus comes across the apostles fishing in the Gospels that they’re never catching anything either? 😁

Since we’re on the subject of gulls, here’s me trying out my new camera last spring. So much fun.

A picture of tail feathers… Seems like an apt metaphor for missed opportunities, or goodbyes.

Pardon me for getting poetic. That is a great picture of tail feathers!

A gull in Vancouver B.C. Canadian gulls are weird.(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

I wonder. At first I was distressed at the sight, but upon further review I observed a number of young gulls in the same predicament. It’s probably part of the learning process. Either that or Canada needs to learn how to feed it’s young gulls.

They do that for mating purposes. It’s only for show. Pretty hip, I think.

It’s like seagull lipstick then!
Here’s something from yesterday, the ubiquitous pigeon, readily found on pretty much any horizontal surface here:

We have another type of bird here that always gets my attention for its unusual whistles and mimicry, the Common Grackle. They are skilled urban scavengers, black, but smaller than crows, with whitish eyes. I will try to get a picture of one next time I’m at the Home Depot parking lot, where they like to hang out. Meanwhile, here is a stock photo:

Love it. The name is just cool. And it’s like a classy crow. Snap! Grackle!! Pop!!!

I think I’ll try that name out on one of the young roosters 😃 They are just beginning to crow in funny juvenile voices .

I thought I’d show the gang some of my own gang’s fancy flying…the Raptors…

My cousins, the Peregines, hold the World Speed Record at 242 mph.

(Chew on that Eagles.)

From this morning, a Mourning Dove with an ocean view

When I worked in the high-rise office buildings downtown, I remember there was a pair of red-tailed hawks that nested near the top of one of the skyscrapers, fed with a steady supply of L.A.'s choicest rats and pigeons!

Ack! I can’t believe it. It’s been two weeks since I’ve encountered a new year bird. February goes that way. It’s pretty easy to pick off most of the local/wintering birds but then there’s lull before the migrants/breeders show up.

My wife and I hit a very popular spot early yesterday morning. I was looking to take photos for class tomorrow (we’re painting waterfalls) and maybe target a few sparrow species. It’s was amazingly sparrowless out there, but then again, there’s lot’s of reports this year on the lack of sparrows, probably due to the ongoing drought. No new species for the year were observed, and there were way too many people! O’ wretched man am I!

On a lighter note, turning into our driveway after church this morning the Lord blessed me with my first county White-winged Dove. I had already seen them on New Year’s Day at the Benedictine monastery where we were staying, but that was in a neighboring county.

Here’s one of the sparrows I was hoping to see yesterday. This is from last year in the same location. You can see why I’m so eager to see this cutie again.

The White-winged Doves that just showed up around here have their own unique call. Some say it sounds like ‘who-cooks-for -you?’. I say it sounds like ‘I’ve lost control!’

What say you?
