Birds are wonderful! Sand pipers, finches, mockingbirds, hummingbirds, and I really love cardinals - especially their beautiful songs and the way their red plumage stands out against the snow!

I have three bird stories.

a) the time a hummingbird thought the flowers on my curtains were real, and spent ten minutes pecking at my window

b) the time I startled a red tailed hawk while he was having supper in a tree. Just imagine yourself walking along, listening to your tunes, and suddenly a nearly decapitated squirrel falls out of a tree and almost hits you on the head. The hawk looked genuinely upset - like he thought I was going to take his squirrel, or something.

c) the time seagulls decided they wanted my mom’s bag of cheese doodles. When she refused, they took it by force.

I love these stories; but especially the one about the seagulls and the cheese doodles. That must have been kind of scary for your Mom, though!

They are kind of amazing to watch in a way though, when they really want something.

I have seen flocks of them go after some left-over fast food that’s on the ground in parking lots.

They’ll go for left-over fries and burger remnants, for example, that have been left on the ground.

We have them here in Wisconsin, because Wisconsin borders Lake Michigan on the East so you’ll see them come a bit inland at times.
 
We had had enough of our fries one day at McDonalds, and there were small birds hanging around. My husband balanced a fry on the side view mirror and a bird swooped down from the sky and snatched it up!

So of course, we did that one at a time with the remaining fries. 😊

Haha you’re right, I don’t think mom ever brought snacks to the boardwalk again!

Seagulls are fascinating. I see them when I go to the shore during the summer, but also when the arctic seagulls come down for the winter (I live in New York). The arctic seagulls settle themselves in a parking lot between a Dunkin’ Donuts and a ShopRite and spend almost all day sunning themselves. They become very lively when someone drops something but otherwise they’re so content to stay put, the locals know to drive around them in the parking lot! It’s as though those spaces are reserved. It always amuses me that seagulls would travel so far for a Dunkin’ Donuts parking lot, but hey, whatever floats their boat!
 
I saw an excellent sign once. It read: Today, I will be as happy as a bird with a French fry. I should have bought it, it was great…
 
Poor little humming bird ! 🤣
Driving the back roads here I notice Hawks swooping in and catching snakes as they warm up on the road sides in the Spring…funny to see them flying away with a snake in their talons twisting and turning.
 
I tried using a rubber snake trying to keep squirrels out of my garden, and a hawk swooped in and flew off with the thing.
 
I’ve recently seen my 500th US lower 48 life bird (Couch’s Kingbird) and my 300th Pima county life bird. (Northern Parula)

I’ll post the photos I took of them when I’m allowed to.
 
The last species of bird I’ve seen in 2018 was (#111) Juniper Titmouse. I didn’t get a photo. That’s a good find and a rare bird for that location.

In 2013, my so called ‘Big Year’, I destroyed the struts on my car trying to see this bird and two other specialties (Mountain Bluebird and Sage Thrasher).by travelling up a really rough dirt road at least four times. I got the thrasher on the last day of the year.

This year I’ve already got all three and I haven’t left paved roads. 😎

I like parakeets. I’ve had 2.

Scariest bird encounter I’ve had is a bald eagle flying really low right at me. I was unsettled, but not by the bird.

Also befriended a blue jay, fed the baby jay until he was okay to fly, then set him loose. He came back to me and sat on my finger and looked at me for a while, then flew away for good.

That’s it.
 
I don’t know, but I am pretty sure they hang around that McDonalds on a regular basis, so they weren’t just getting them from us.

Every one’s quality of life just went up. 😀 Here’s an American Bittern I encountered last month. I’ve never seen this bird that well, much less managed a photograph.
