We have huge numbers of these residents in our town. I would like them more if they didn’t make such a mess.

Canada Geese used to be strictly migratory but now if they get comfortable enough in our parks or on our golf courses, they don’t feel the need to go anywhere.
 
Yes, I think I can relate to that. I think they might do that here. Anyways, they are here for a longgg time. We have lots and lots of nice grassy lawns for them.

We have lots of hummingbirds here, year round. Inspired by this thread, I put a hummingbird feeder out on my balcony this morning, and here is the first visitor. I had a feeder out years ago when my son was young, but it was a different style and attracted as many house wrens as it did hummingbirds. This style, I’m told, is supposed to discourage other birds.

And in other birding news, while going into the cathedral for mass just before sunrise, I spied a Peregrine Falcon harassing a flock of Rock Pigeons.

A few weeks ago my wife and I were going to mass at one of our sister parish’s. It had been a while since we had been there and getting out of the car I had a funny feeling. A chorus of Lesser Goldfinches were twittering away, hidden in the tree tops. A hawk appeared over the hospital to the west. It lazily hovered towards us and then soared past the church bell tower and out of sight.

And finally, it’s been a while since the Benedictine sisters have left us. Their convent is now shuttered and off-limits, but a very rare Streak-backed Oriole has shown up on the grounds in their absence. I haven’t seen it yet.

Here’s a picture of the convent’s bell tower from the oriole stake-out spot. The real estate developer who bought it might tear it down.

I did see it but I heard its’ call “Bob White” it has been a while since I heard one. 😀

@christofirst, your hummingbird photos came out just fine. 🙂

I can see the little hummingbird very well. I love to see them.

We have the Ruby-throated hummingbirds up here during the warmer months. They like to hang around the Evergreen trees in the back.

I’d love to put up a feeder off of our balcony but I’m afraid it would also draw wasps up here.

We get those paper wasps, and they are prone to trying to nest up here. It gets really hot up here in the Summer, and they like the heat.
 
Wild turkeys are rather shy, so we do not often see them charge or even stand their ground. They usually fly away. On one occasion, we saw that mother turkeys can be defensive when their small chicks are about.

I think it is too early in the season for turkey chicks to be roaming. In any case, this picture was taken through an open window (hence the blurred icicles you can see) at a range of about 30 feet (9 meters).

Hi all,
Does anyone know of a duck that frequents the northwest that has a rich coppery head with a mohawk down the back of it, a brilliant silver back and a lovely silvery white chest?
I’ve been on ducks unlimited and I can’t find it, but I saw two this afternoon in a shallow lake/oversize pond near my home.
