“South Pacific” will always have a special place in my heart, as I played Nellie in my high school production.

Another great one I saw which I had never heard of before was “The Drowsy Chaperone”. Very funny and catchy music.

“Anything Goes” has great music, as I love Cole Porter.

Yes. And “Royal Wedding” and “Top Hat”.
For you Roku users, I found “Royal Wedding” streaming for FREE on the “Premiere” app last night. (Probably ad-supported, though I haven’t checked)

(ETA: Just checked - it is indeed ad-supported, or you can watch ad-free with a 24-hour rental for 99 cents. Not a bad deal!)

If the thread is allowing musical style movies I have to admit I like Team America World Police too!
Then I suspect you might also enjoy Cannibal the Musical. It is especially ridiculous. Apologies if it has already been mentioned.

Not much of a fan of musicals but West Side Story because it reflected my experience.

Then I guess Yankee Doodle Dandy, It is my understanding that Joan Leslie was only 16 years old when she played the part of Mary, Cohan’s wife. I also like the Rita Hayworth musicals.

Let’s branch off a bit here since I mentioned soundtracks in my post above.

Have any favorites? I like a lot of soundtracks from films, but I have a tendency to have a favorite in the composer, John Barry. He did the music for Out of Africa and Dances With Wolves, just to name a couple.

My son enjoyed The Book of Mormon. I didn’t see it. I don’t think he’s a big fan of musicals, so it is probably his favorite.

The soundtrack to “The Thornbirds”.
Henry Mancini composed it.

That actually was pretty good. I love the opening credits theme.

Schindler’s List - John Williams

Jurassic Park - John Williams

The Mission - Ennio Morricone

Kiss of the Spider Woman - Nando Carneiro

Battle Royale - Masamichi Amano

There was a point in my life where I had “I feel pretty” from West Side Story stuck in my head for over 6 months.

So I guess West Side Story.

When I was a kid my faves were “West Side Story” and “My Fair Lady” (the movies). After I grew up I didn’t like musicals anymore (maybe trying to shed them off to be cooler!?).
The closest to a favorite musical would be a movie in which music is almost a main character like “Begin Again”

Not that there are any tracks in its soundtrack that are on my favorite playlist, but the movie as a whole and its relationship with music really touched me and is now my favorite movie+music.

Did anyone nominate Damn Yankees (1958)?

A - as a comedy
A- for the varied eclectic music of many genres
A - as a romantic love/triangle movie
A - subtly sexy … but a kid could watch it
A - for memorable stood the test of time, songs
A- for making elaborate choreography work
A - for being borderline sci-fi (occult thriller?)
A - for being one of the best morality tales ever
A - one of the best movies featuring a loyal wife
A - one of the best underdog movies (in 2 ways)
A - as a cult movie, my family often quotes from it.

Sometimes, but they are an art form all their own. And I don’t think that applies to Cabaret, in which the musical numbers are integrated into the storyline. It was originally a stage production although I did not see that, only the movie.

I love so many of them! I’ll have to say Mamma Mia, Rodgers and Hammersteins Cinderella, The Wiz, Wicked, Chicago, West Side Story, Sound of Music, Dreamgirls, etc.

Gypsy.

Best on live stage, but the movie versions are good. I like the one with Rosalind Russell as Mama Rose, Natalie Wood as Louise, and Karl Malden as Herbie. Wish someone had filmed Ethel Merman on Broadway doing this show–she was amazing (and loud!). I can remember watching Gypsy Rose Lee on “Hollywood Palace” when I was little.

All the songs are good, especially Little Lamb, and If Mama Was Married. The plot is compelling, and the characters are so well-developed in the book. And the ending is satisfying. The show makes me examine my life to see if I’m in balance (Mama Rose wasn’t.)

I identify with Mama Rose! 🙂 But honest, I truly did allow my children to choose their own path in life. They don’t have awful memories of me shouting, “Sing out, Louise!”
