What is Your Opinion on the Life Teen Mass?

To those that object to anything more upbeat then a pipe organ at Mass, I would recommend the following reading :

1 Chronicles 13:8
1 Chronicles 15:28
Nehemiah 12:27
1 Maccabees 13:51
Psalms 105:2 ← If you only have time for 1, make it this one…
Psalms 149:3
Sirach 39:15

God loves music. Not just your music, or my music. I’d consider long and hard before declaring that nothing with more of an edge than the Carpenters is pleasing to God.

God rocks!
:amen:

We had it in our parish for several years, including the lively Masses, and it was packed by all ages. It was the late Mass on Sundays, traditionally attended by older folks. Those old folks continued to come and enjoyed it. The new pastor stopped the LifeTeen Masses; LifeTeen activities and studies dropped off, and the LifeTeen choir moved to another parish which welcomed them and the youth. The Mass is no longer well attended, the church is nowhere near full for the 5:00 Masses and the kids are gone. Yes. LifeTeen draws the kids and presents the Liturgy to them in a way they can understand and participate in joyfully. It is very close to charismatic, but so are young people, who are ready to have a lively relationship with Jesus.
From your post it seems more than teens were drawn. And isn’t that the whole point? To draw people closer to Christ? I’m far removed from being teen. But lively upbeat music certainly nourishes my faith and moves my soul far more than traditional. So my opinion? I like the option.

Yeah…this thread is going to explode in a hurry. Orchids, it’s not rocket science; if people have issues with the charismatic movement (and with the OF as a whole) the odds are high they will not like the Life Teen Mass 🙂

Anyway, I’m 28 years of age and I’ve been involved (ie; volunteering) in the program for the past six years or so, which makes me biased. Currently I run the R.C.I.T. program as well, which is good times (we have two girls getting confirmed on Pentecost Sunday).

I’ve got zero issues with the Life Teen Mass, and that includes the music (provided that it is mixed well and the volume is at an acceptable level). Of course, I’m in the music ministry as well so that’s even more bias.

I’m ducking out of this now before the RAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGEEEEEEEEE comes in.
I offer no rage. Only 👍 and :clapping:

It’s refreshing to see someone who understands that youth need to worship with music that is relevant to THEM! Rather than what is relevant to their PARENTS who, convieniently enough, make up most of the parish population.

Just remember the outcries when gregorian chant was introduced, or when those darn satanic organs were brought in to the churches. (I am NOT making this up, take a simple music history course).

It’s good that the church is finally starting to pay attention to the spiritual needs of youth, rather than ignoring them, belittling them, and driving them away. Wanna kill a church? Drive out the youth with a misplaced sense on piety and self-righteousness in music choices. Respect people’s preferences on what constitutes “holy music” for crying out loud!!!

I’m 18 and I don’t like it. It’s nearly impossible to pray with all the noise. Funny, I went to easter mass at our cathedral this year. They had an excellent choir full brass and the organ. People participated. People sang. I feelt close to God. It sort of made me think…WHY THE HECK DID WE SWITCH TO GUITARS? And i was not raised in a uber traditional parish…we didn’t have organ music normally. I’m young. Where did this rich tradition of music go? Why no reverence?

With that said I think some parts of the Lifeteen program are just fine.

Oh and I’m going to get killed for this one. Why to Choirs like to be up front? I think it honestly gets to their egos. My mom did it for years and now she won’t go to a lifeteen mass anymore. She told me I does get to become like a “show” or “concert” Even when they pray before mass. Even when the intentions were good. It gets to you. Why no choir lofts now?

In my really staunch Traditionalist opinion, I very much dislike it.

No matter how old you are, Mass is about Jesus’ sacrifice - its an occasion where we reflect, in reverence, upon the gift he gave us and beg for his mercy upon us as sinners. It is for HIM and not for our own amusement. All thoughts should be focused on HIM.

I don’t care what the Youth programs chooses to do on their own time, but a Mass is not the place to be “cool” (or charismatic for that matter). Young people don’t NEED that kind of environment to become close to God. The last 2000 years is proof of that – how many teen Saints do we have?

Kids need to be catechized first and foremost - which is something that is severely lacking these days in Catholic Schools, and even more importantly, in the home.

No, it’s not there for anyone’s entertainment, but why do YOU go to a mass with organ music. Do you enjoy it? Are you uplifted by it? Can you imagine that some people are not? There are people out there for find a guitar far more spiritually uplifting than an organ. It’s called preference and culture. Not everyone thinks that same or feels the same as everyone else, this is the beauty of human diversity. I personally am diverse, thanks to an affinity for music. Organ music, guitar, heck even a PAN flute when played properly can show me Jesus. Can you not see Jesus in a guitar? That’s your preference. Just as some people can’t see Jesus in an organ. EVERYONE is different. It’s not about “those darn kids just wanting to be entertained!” it’s about “Those kids who can’t find relevance in a church that considers their preferences evil.”

Personally, I think it’s sick that youth have lost so much relevance to the gospel because they have been ignored so much that they are the MOST under represented demographic in the church. If that isn’t a sign that something has gone horrifically wrong, I don’t know what is. But, if our piety costs us the future through the youth, I guess it’s worth it to keep the faithful few.

  1. Organs are your preference. I love organs. I also love guitars. I have many preferences. Some people do not. Some people see guitars like you see organs. “Reverence” when we are talking about musical styles are a personal preference, and it’s really not fair to judge people as “irreverent” because they experience closeness to God through drums and guitars.
  2. Choirs are typically up front not to feed some ego, or show themselves off. We (yes, I am in a choir) have to stand in certain areas so everyone can HEAR, or because of the accoustics of the building. There are some churches built to have choirs in the back, the sides, or in a loft. It’s about accoustics, not egos. Unless someone wants to give tons of money to build new churches with the"accoustic sweet spot" in the back, it’ll just have to remain that way.

I’m 18 and I don’t know it.

But in synch with the discussion, i think this kind of Mass includes loud music? If that’s the case, I won’t like it.

Yes, God loves music but we must be responsible where to use certain kinds/genre of music. We don’t rap/rock on solemn occasions, and Holy Mass is a special and solemn occasion. You can sing your lungs out loud somewhere else but not on a Holy Mass. I believe Holy Mass demands contemplation and rock music will never make a person contemplate in the silence of a church-goer’s heart.

Yes youth, like me, would like a music known to us. That’s very true. But don’t place it during the Holy Mass. Place it somewhere else, on prayer meetings etc. etc.

In the Philippines, we use the guitar. Not the electric one, but the acoustic (whatever we call that) guitar. It’s part of our culture. During the Palm Sunday, the choir played vernacular religious songs with guitar and it is amazing. The choir was all-male, they’re quite old and they sounded like ‘kundiman’ (local and traditional love songs. So usually the song is sweet). BTW, We Filipinos have traditional religious songs called ‘dalit (traditional song of praise to God in Spanish or in vernacular)’.

I am troubled with the original meaning of the phrase ‘You rock!’

Actually instruments of any kind are very, very seldom used in our Parish’s Masses. I don’t find it lacking at all personally.

Kids CAN find relevance in the Church the way it is. What they need are good Teachers of the Faith.

The Gospel is relevant to all. Young and Old. When the Priest speaks the words, he is speaking to everyone. When the Holy See speaks, it speaks to everyone as well - all Catholics. The Youth are not ignored, they’re part of ALL that the Church is. They need to understand that.

  1. It is NOT ONLY a matter of preference IMHO They are building churches now that are just ugly on purpose. Read the book “Ugly as Sin” It’s actually really interesting. When we say it only is about tastes we border relativism. I also listen to rock music. I love rock concerts. I don’t listen to Mozart in the car driving. I’m not even a hard core “traditionalist” I’m young. I grew up on this stuff you seem to love so much. Maybe if you heard it done well you might change your opinon 🤷
Yes It is my opinion Organ music is better. People only think of it as funeral home stuff. Partly in IMHO because we drove all the choir directors that could make it sound beautiful out. My problem is not so much with guitars, but with the low quality in music that they tend to bring with them. If they could raise the standard in quality and be reverent

And at our Cathedral they have a choir loft. But guess what? The teen mass is done up front. The point is not to connect with the chior/ band but with Christ. Nearly all new churches are built (that I have seen) with the intention of having the choir up front. I really think being up front will work your ego. Sorry to be so blunt about that. I’ve done preforming arts (dance and mucic) all of high school. It is REALLY easy for it to become “a show” 😦

(whew…rant over) I don’t mean all this personally so please don’t get upset. I’m young. I’m part of the “future of the church” I’m not the only young person to feel like this. Please don’t ignore us. Please don’t brush us aside as a bunch of old people who can’t stand a change because I wasn’t even alive when this stuff was changed.

Well put

To those that object to anything more upbeat then a pipe organ at Mass, I would recommend the following reading :

1 Chronicles 13:8
1 Chronicles 15:28
Nehemiah 12:27
1 Maccabees 13:51
Psalms 105:2 ← If you only have time for 1, make it this one…
Psalms 149:3
Sirach 39:15

God loves music. Not just your music, or my music. I’d consider long and hard before declaring that nothing with more of an edge than the Carpenters is pleasing to God.

God rocks!
None of these passages are even remotely relevant. We are talking about the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. These passages are 1) OT 2) Not referring to Mass. Time and place for everything.

The music isn’t the primary issue with Life Teen Masses. It is the wrong focus. The Masses, by definition, are focused on “teens” NOT God. That is, quite obviously, wrong. The Mass speaks for itself. There have been numerous saints pre V2.

agreed. but that is no excuse for low quality music or irreverence. There was a point when they only had people receive the blessed sacrament under the species of bread because there was a heresy that you had to receive under both species to receive Jesus. Right now all of the irreverent masses (that I have been to) with funky liturgical stuff going on play guitar music. I think we need at this point in time to put restrictions on what music can be used at mass until it improves. Maybe not say “no guitars at all” but restrict what sort of music is allowed I mean…What’s with all the non catholic music at mass? “Lord of the Dance” is a Shaker song. What happed to Ave Maria?

I’m just a bummed out teen who feels like he’s missing out.

An open letter to those involved with Life Teen.
April 27, 2001
Since our article criticizing the Life Teen Mass was posted we have had a surprising amount of responses, mostly from those involved with the Life Teen Mass. While some have mentioned how much inspiration they receive by this style of liturgy, none have really addressed the fundamental reason for my criticism. I suspect this is simply because there is no defense for open rebellion against the magisterial authority of the Church. Although this letter was originally intended for one young man, due to the responses, we have decided to make this an open letter to all involved with Life Teen.
Dear Life Teens,
With heartfelt concern I would like to give you my own reasons why the “lively” Teen Mass is inappropriate. The feel good songs of praise, the tambourine shaking and the hooting and hollering is well and good in another setting outside of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. The reason is this. There is an extremely poor understanding of the Theology of the Mass, of knowing what exactly takes place at every Mass. If every Catholic understood, the Church itself would be transformed.
Every time you enter into a Catholic Church and prepare yourself for the Sacrifice, you leave the world behind and enter into Calvary. Time stands still and you are no longer in 2001 for the Mass is “other worldly”. This is a mystery that you are not meant to understand but it makes this truth no less a reality. You are present with Jesus and the Apostles in the upper room. Jesus is getting ready to spill out His blood for your sins. He is getting ready to suffer. This was not a “happy” time for Him. You are one of the apostles sitting at the table with Him. You feel Christ’s sadness, see His distress, are ready to go to the garden, to pray and to watch with Him.
After that you begin to walk the road to Calvary. And if you are one of the brave ones, as Christ’s Mother, St. John the Beloved, and St. Mary Magdalene was, you will walk the way with Christ and stand beneath the cross and see His blood spilled and His Life poured out for you alone. We’ve often heard that if we were the only one in the world, Christ would’ve died for me. This is a personal thing. At Mass these realities should be every present to everyone there. When the focus is on feeling good and having a good time we forget that Jesus is getting ready to shed His blood and our sins are what put Him on the cross.
If Jesus were to come in the clouds today or were to show up in your living room I don’t believe that you would play some “happening” music or shake your tambourine. In Revelations St. John saw the “Lamb looking as if slain” and St. John “fell down as if dead”. We too would fall down on our faces and cry, “Have mercy!” We have an extremely poor understanding of the ugliness of every sin in comparison with the beauty of God and therefore we consider ourselves somewhat “worthy” of this redemption thing so we have no true fear of the Lord or appreciation for what actually took place on Calvary. One tiny venial sin is so incompatible with the complete goodness of God that our tiny minds cannot fathom how ugly our souls must be compared to the perfection of Christ. When we make the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass a “feel good” thing we take the emphasis off Christ and put it on ourselves. One could easily say the Mass becomes a “self-worship” thing instead of true worship of the Living God. All our attention should be on God and absolutely nothing should bring attention to ourselves. I say come down off that altar where no one belongs but the Priest who represents Christ, the great High Priest, fall down on your face and make reparation for your sins. “A contrite heart, O God, you will not spurn”.
Hopefully you will better understand what takes place in every Mass. If you love to sing songs of praise and dance to the Lord that is a wonderful thing. But we must also be willing to forget ourselves, unite ourselves to Christ’s sacrifice and enter into the mysteries of our salvation. We must go to Calvary at Mass, prepare our hearts to receive him by confessing our sins to a priest often and by spending much time in quiet prayer before receiving our Lord sacramentally in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. The Mass is primarily a Sacrifice and we can never lose sight of this fact lest our celebrations become “love feasts” with ourselves. None of us would’ve been dancing in the aisles at the Last Supper. Nor should we be at Mass.
In Christ’s love Your sister in Him,
Janet Inman

"I speak from personal experience and that of friends.
The whole “come as you are” attitude tells people that Jesus is their buddy. He loves and accepts them just the way they are and they shouldn’t change a thing. This really damages the person’s understanding of how unworthy they are to be present at the Mass, let alone receive Christ Himself. It also gives them the idea that they don’t have to strive to be a better person. Teens who feel like no one understands them (especially parents) look for someone who loves and accepts them just the way they are, and Life-Teen offers them that acceptance.
They go to Mass to “feel good,” and I believe St. John of the Cross is one who warns against “spiritual gluttony.” After experiencing this “good feeling,” a normal Mass just won’t do it for them anymore. So when they grow up and are too old to attend Life-Teen (or if they are otherwise unable to attend), they just don’t “get anything” out of Mass anymore. They leave the Church for protestant churches to regain that good feeling. Why? Because they never learned the true purpose of the Mass, and they don’t believe in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist! By the way, the relaxed, fun attitude of the Life-Teen Masses encourages this because it doesn’t give the Sacrifice of the Mass the reverence and dignity of Calvary.
Life-Teen Masses seem good at first, because it brings kids into Church. However, it ends up hurting their faith and driving them away from it in the end. Ladies and gentlemen, the devil at work."

From former Life-Teen Music leader who left the Catholic Church…

Commenting on Cardinal Schonborn’s Balloon/ Disco Mass.

seizethedei.blogspot.com/2008/11/see-with-balloons-you-get-low-and-high.html
Greetings STD readers:
Presumably, I’m the former LifeTeen music leader that Patrick is referring to, so I thought I had an obligation to chime in on this one.
Obviously, I’m no longer a Catholic. But I’d like to dispense some advice to anyone who watched the video of this mass and didn’t get as miffed as Patrick. I’m not one to normally stick up for the church, but I couldn’t let this slide.
Has the church in Europe become this desperate?
Lifeteen is a well-meaning, genuinely sincere organization. But I hardly believe this is what they had in mind when they formed. I attended a mass at St. Timothy’s in Mesa, Arizona where the Lifeteen program was formed, and I can tell you that THIS is not the way things are done.
This European “mass” is absurd. A few years down the road, they’re gonna throw in some DJ’s, ecstasy, and the vague notion that a full-blown orgy will follow. My guess is that that poor Bishop was wondering how the hell he let this one slip by in his diocese.
The “Youth Movement” has to realize that there’s a point where you lose sight of the ball. These teens aren’t going to be attending mass for the “right” reasons. They’re going for the free pizza and chance to make out with the cute girl in Pew 3 after “LifeNight”. I’ve been there. I had groupies for God’s sake (pun intended), and we were not nearly this tacky. My guess is that singer in the middle is already picking out his favorite screaming girl. He looks waayyyy to happy.
Contrary to what Patrick has suggested, the Lifeteen program didn’t make me leave the church (but I can see why he would draw the conclusion). If anything, I hung around for a few more years for the pizza and, er, “friendship”. But those are terrible reasons to stand up and profess a belief each week. Is this the generation of Catholics you want to raise?
There’s nothing wrong with adapting the music so that a mass is less painful to those without an appreciation for the CBW. My former church was pretty good at that. But this “party church” is insane. You can’t lure teenagers in with the promise of free pizza, balloons, and a rock concert and expect them to hit up the confession box afterwards. They’re not there for the confessional.
This looks more to me like liturgical prostitution.
If you really believe that your transubstantiating your God, then you probably shouldn’t shouldn’t welcome him into your heart with this prelude to a orgiastic mosh-pit. Jesus is not amused.
Either way, I’m no longer a Catholic, so y’all can do what you like. I’m just suggesting embracing these kinds of cheap tactics will only put the church on the fast track to half-assed party Catholics and the extinction of any admirable traits of the church.
Quality, folks, not quantity.

Life-Teen Founder Excommunicated
Life Teen Founder Excommunicated
Fr. Dale Fushek, best known for being one of the founders of “Life Teen”, has finally been excommunicated.
From the Diocese of Phoenix website:
December 15, 2008-The Most Rev. Thomas J. Olmsted, Bishop of Phoenix, has issued a Decree of Excommunication to Reverend Monsignor Dale Fushek and Reverend Mark Dippre.
Fushek and Dippre have incurred the censure of excommunication because they have chosen to be in schism with the Catholic Church by establishing and leading an opposing ecclesial community known to the public as the Praise and Worship Center. Both priests have consistently refused to comply with explicit directions by Bishop Olmsted to discontinue engaging in public ministry. The excommunications were incurred after repeated offers of reconciliation were ignored. The decree of excommunication by Bishop Olmsted declares the censure that Fushek and Dippre, as ordained priests, have brought upon themselves. The purpose of these sanctions is to reconcile both men with the Catholic Church and to preserve the integrity and unity of the Diocese.
… Bishop Olmsted continues to express his grave concern for Catholics who may be misled or confused by the actions of Dale Fushek and Mark Dippre. The Diocese of Phoenix does not endorse the actions of these excommunicated priests and we encourage Catholics to refrain from attending or supporting the Praise and Worship Center. We remind Catholics that the ultimate form of praise and worship is and always will be the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, and we urge them to keep the Mass as the center of their lives. There is no substitution for the graces received at Mass and no prayer more edifying.
Marcel has a reaction statement from the current president of Life Teen, Randy Raus, making the point that Fr. Fushek’s involvement with Life Teen is long over:
This excommunication is not connected in any way with the ministry of Life Teen, as all of the actions that led to this occurred after Rev. Dale Fushek’s involvement with our ministry. Further, I want to make it clear that Life Teen is in no way associated with his new venture.
Even though it has been almost four years since he has been directly involved with the movement of Life Teen, the media continues to associate Rev. Dale Fushek with Life Teen. While we continue to pray for Rev. Dale Fushek, the movement of Life Teen is in full support of Bishop Olmsted and Diocese of Phoenix in this matter.
Fr. Fushek (wiki entry) has been very bad news for a long time. In 2005 he was indicted for sexually-related misdemeanor charges. The one-time vicar general of the diocese was accused of sexually abusing a teen, and costing the diocese a $100,000 settlement. I commented on this developing story briefly back in January.
Well, good riddance.

Life-Teen Founder Defrocked by Pope Benedict
Dale Fushek had been a pastor at an Arizona parish as well as vicar general of the Diocese of Phoenix.
Dale Fushek´s laicization comes in wake of his 2008 excommunication, which remains in force.
PHOENIX, AZ (CNA) - A recent ruling from Pope Benedict XVI, which was confirmed by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF), dismissed one of Life Teen´s founders from his clerical state following an investigation into charges of sexual abuse of minors.
Msgr. Dale Fushek had been a pastor at an Arizona parish as well as vicar general of the Diocese of Phoenix.
However, Fushek came under scrutiny after several accusations of sexual abuse against minors were lodged with the diocese, which were then forwarded to the Holy See.
According to a Feb. 16 statement from the diocese, "The Holy See then directed the Diocese of Phoenix to conduct an investigation into the allegations. The results of that investigation were forwarded to the CDF. Based on the CDF´s review of the findings of that investigation and on Fushek´s abandonment of his ministry and his subsequent schismatic acts, the CDF issued the ‘Decree of Dismissal’ and forwarded it to the Diocese of Phoenix.
“Fushek has been notified of the laicization, which took effect the moment the Decree was signed, and he has been informed of its consequences,” the diocese added.
The Arizona diocese also made clear that the penalties being imposed on Fushek are not connected to any civil proceedings or rulings but are purely Church-related.
Fushek´s laicization means he can no longer refer to himself as “father,” “reverend,” or “monsignor.” He is also not bound to the duties and obligations of the priesthood.
In turn, the diocese in which he resides is not obligated to provide services to him, such as lodging, pay and health insurance. Fushek is also prohibited from celebrating the sacraments, except in the case of someone who is in danger of death.
Fushek´s laicization comes in wake of his 2008 excommunication, which remains in force.
Fushek was suspended from his duties in 2004 by Phoenix Bishop Thomas Olmsted and subsequently resigned as pastor in 2005. However, he proceeded to co-found the non-denominational Praise and Worship Center with Father Mark Dippre. The Praise and Worship Center meets Sundays at the Fiesta Fountains Recreation Center in Mesa, Ariz. Dippre and Fushek have repeatedly said their services should not be considered “Catholic” in any way. However, the 10 a.m. meeting time conflicts with many Catholic Masses.
When the diocese asked Dippre and Fuschek to cease their activities at the Praise and Worship Center, the two men declined. This incurred excommunication for having disobediently established an “opposing ecclesial community.”
According to the Catholic Sun, the Diocese of Phoenix hopes Fushek will “cease all public ministries and seek to transition into a new mode of life and work.”
The faithful were also reminded by the diocese that participating in and promoting the activities of the Praise and Worship Center can be spiritually harmful and cause rupture within the Catholic communion.

Outside of The Eucharist, I abhor its format and the liberal inventions found in it
I don’t really know what to think of it. I hate the loud, raucous music they have at the Mass, and dislike the way they pray the Creed. I know the priest who started it was excommunicated, too.

What do you guys think of it?
Is it really keeping teens at church?

Catholicdude92, you are not far from the Truth.

You have been blessed with a true sensus catholicus from God telling you these things are wrong. It is a grace. Don’t let it pass.
