For the same reason that the Devil went to Hell - because they want things their own way, rather than God’s way - and they are continually building up the habit of self-satisfaction, rather than the habit of self-sacrifice.It seems to me that anybody who chooses eternal torment over eternal bliss must be at least a few sandwiches short of a picnic. Indeed, it’s more likely that such a person would be completely insane. However, assuming it is a reasoned choice, why do you think people would choose to go to hell?
Good answer. I agree.SSTeacher;4996040:

Every time we sleep in instead of going to Mass on a Sunday morning, we turn our faces towards the darkness of Hell. Every time we fail to tithe and decide keep the money for ourselves, it’s one more step towards Hell; every time a lonely person phones and we say to the person, “Sorry, I don’t have time for you tonight,” and hang up on them because we want to watch our TV show; every time we put off going to Confession because “Well, I wasn’t so bad” - C. S. Lewis once wrote, the surest road to Hell is easy, gradual, and unmarked - there is no sudden epiphany of “I hate God” - it’s more a matter of “I haven’t got time for God, today - maybe tomorrow” - and then tomorrow never actually comes - and then in the end, “God, who? I think I used to know someone by that name - it was a long time ago. Never mind that, though. What’s for supper?”
I could not choose any of those answers as being correct. Here are some opinions:
a) No such place actually exists
b) It’s just a figurative idea without any reality attached to it
c) It’s total separation from God forever
d) Hell is present in the here and now
e) Only the very wicked people will go to hell
g) It doesn’t matter because there’s no such thing as an afterlife
g) It doesn’t matter because all people will end up in heaven anyway

hi mick…isnt it possible that some would bear such malice towards the light that they would happily choose the dark?(not me, mind you, im just speculating)…of course it assumes the rationality of holding god/religion in such spite that you would see hell/eternal damnation as a viable option…personally…im still undecided as to the existance of salvation…frederick…:juggle:It seems to me that anybody who chooses eternal torment over eternal bliss must be at least a few sandwiches short of a picnic. well…i dont know, mick…you would have to ask what turned them away from the light…are they wrapped up in themselves or have they been enfolded against their will and pushed from the light?..i KNOW there are people who are evil just to be evil…serial killers, violent rapists, etc…if u say that god (absolute good),and satan (absolute evil), are in competition for the souls of humankind, then doesnt it make sense that people are converted to one side or the other?..frederickHi Frederick,
Yes, I guess it’s possible but it seems to me that for people to have reached the hypothetical point about which you’re speculating, they would have gotten so completely wrapped up in themselves that there would be no room whatsoever for any light to penetrate into their lives. They’d be completely focused on themselves – almost, I suppose, to the point of choosing bad for bad’s sake, were such a thing possible for a human being. It makes me shudder just to think about it.
Tremblingly,
Mick

i think we are a blank page, initially…mind you, i dont quite mean nuetral and free will plays too big a part for us to just be pawns…but i dont think that anyone is born either good or evil…lol…i think i just managed to talk in a circle and say nothing…frederick…Frederick,
Hmmm. Engaging thought process, which leads me to ask about your view of human nature. Do you think we’re basically, good, basically bad, or neutral i.e. just pawns in the game?
Curiously,
Mick

Well, give a bit of thought and find a reason for choosing one of the three as a definite and then we can dialogue about the implications of your choice in relation to the idea of hell.SSTeacher;5003962:

OK, so let’s go back to starting question (I have to go to a birthday party in few minutes). Do you think human beings are basically good, basically bad, or neutral? Pick one for definite and once you’ve taken your position we’ll explore the possibilities in connection with the idea of hell.fantastic!!..i enjoy the discussions…:extrahappy:…fd
