What name will next Pope choose?

It would be no different than 1903-1958. Pius, Benedict, Pius, Pius. 47 years of Pius and 8 of Benedict.
Except Benedict, we’ve had 47 years of Johns and Pauls and John Pauls. =p

Pope Pius XIII would be good. Popes Pii tend to be best at crushing heresy.

I say the next Pope will pick something brand new…

I’m guessing Pope Joseph (being the patron of the universal Church and a shout-out to the last one’s baptismal first name-and his predecessor’s baptismal middle name).

Bravo, seeing as how the last original Pope name was Lando in the 700s!

I would like to see our pope take in 3 names, and when he does take up this name that he asks for them to intercede for the church, does of us whom are in it, and his pontificate. I would go pope Michael Gabriel Rafael

Wouldn’t it be cool if Fred, Bob or Ralph was chosen?!? Lol

Seriously though I think its been a while since we had Andrew

A lot of people are throwing out new names and such (many are tongue in cheek, I know), but I think its important to remember where we are right now as a Church. The main cause of the previous Pope’s pontificate was to attempt to get people to understand the “hermeneutic of continuity”.

One of our greatest challenges today in the Church is getting to the heart of what Vatican II was actually about, and “re-establishing” if you will that sense of continuity rather than rupture, division, and innovation.

I believe Pope’s regnal names are important, and this one especially. Nothing would strengthen the idea of the next Pope’s solidarity with the Pope Emeritus’ pontificate more than to choose either Benedict XVII or another traditional Pope name (minus John simply because the previous John is the one who convened Vatican II and that would send those who want further “liberal reform” into a frenzy expecting Vatican III).

On the other hand, nothing would fly in the face of that idea more than a Pope innovating a new name and becoming Pope George Ringo… 😃 (or anything in the “new”, “never done before”, or “hip” vein.)

Just my thoughts and opinion. Of course, I could be way off. But our words mean something, and names mean something…and I expect this to be no different.

God bless.

-Paul

Zachary II. Of course, I’m biased because that’s my name, but it would be unique and traditional.

Like others here, I’m hoping for Gregory. My reasons a bit more superficial as I just like the sound of the name. 😛
I’ve thought about if he chooses an original name, and the two that come to mind are, as others have stated, Ignatius or Francis.

How about Benedict John?

Or John Paul Benedict. (Can three names be used?)
