What name will next Pope choose?

If a new name was chosen I would love to see Pope Alphonsus I.

Focus on returning to confession and morality are needed so taking the name of St Alphonsus would be a good move. PP Benedict XVI also proposed St Alphonsus as the model for new evangelization.

If he took a more traditional name I’d like Gregory.

The Pope can call himself whatever he wants.
But that would be kind of long

Today, Pope Whatever He Wants, issued an encyclical. Although Pope Whatever sounds like the pope the progressives in the Church would want elected.

Benedict XVII would be great, for reasons already cited. However, the very traditional names already mentioned here, but not recently used, would be great, such as Gregory XVII, Clement XV, Alexander VIII, Urban IX, along with others I don’t recall being mentioned here: Adrian VI, Stephen X, Innocent XIV and Nicholas V.

If it were Sixtus, he would be Sixtus VI–think of how that sounds aloud, Sixtus the Sixth.

Sixtus the Sixth? Would he reign for 6 years just to make the end timers freak out!?

I think its safe to say the days of Sixtus being picked are numbered…😃

Ditto for Innocent! as for JPIII - he might as well call himself Peter given the comparisons he’d have to live up to!

I think Thomas - there’s a bit of Thomas the Apostle in all of us - but also in honour of St Thomas Aquinas.

I dreamt it would be Gregory or Leo. In a small way, I hope the name Paschal III is chosen both because of the central importance of the word itself and the fact that the conclave is taking place right before Easter!

I really don’t think the Pontiff who will be knows what he would choose. Perhaps it is something that is inspired by the Holy Spirit in the few seconds after the question that the Cardinal asks the newly elected Pope by what name do you want to be known as has been posed.

It’s been exactly 1,100 years and 145 Popes since Pope Lando became the last Pope to take an original name (John Paul I was only semi-original since he took the names of his two predecessors). So all those hoping for Michael, Patrick, Joseph, Ignatius, etc. etc. etc. are pretty much guaranteed to be disappointed.

I don’t think that is how it works. Pope Benedict XVI was very forthcoming about why he chose the name. It was obviously something he had thought about. In fact he and his brother once talked about what names they liked for Pope. Benedict said when he was just a kid that he like the name benedict for the pope…
Other Popes have chosen the names because of devotions or pontificates they admired.

I’m hoping our Next New Pope takes on a respected name that will catch everyone off guard.
IMHO it’s His personal choice. Not how everyone wishes, hopes or prophesizes it will be.
