Leo XIV would represent a synthesis of Benedict XVIā€™s theological precision and Francisā€™s criticism of Western-style politico-capitalism run amuck.

YESSS

If Iā€™m ever elected Pope, that will absolutely be my name

What, Francisā€™ papacy has been filled with public doctrinal clarity? Please.
Weā€™ve discussed this on other threads.

We need a centrist for the next Pope, not a Lefty like Marx, nor some crazy far righter like Burke.

Youā€™re a bit too young to remember the last papacy. Whatever you think of him, both left and right agree that Pope Benedict was not gifted in the PR department. And that was a disaster as most news coverage of the Church at that time focused on the child abuse scandals and the coverups. Bishops were working overtime doing damage control, and Pope Benedict did not make their job any easier.

Compared to those days, Pope Francisā€™s papacy has been a much needed breather, even if he seriously screwed up on his recent visit to Chile. For Pope Francis, this was an exception. Under Pope Benedict, goof-ups like this were more the rule.

If you think Pope Francis is polarizing, he ainā€™t nuthinā€™ compared to his predecessor.

Certainly in the realm of secular, non-doctrinal PR, Francis beats Benedict.

But, then again, no one under bxvi was wondering ā€˜is Hell realā€™ or the likeā€¦

They each have their skills, I will give them that.

Talking about skills, I do hope you are working hard on your Latin skills. Good luck with that! I loved Latin so much I studied it for four years in HS and another four years in college. Once you get a handle on it, it can be a lot of fun!

Itā€™s a 2 year mandatory class at my school. I barely got through those two years haha.

I love the language, dont get me wrong. Iā€™m just not that great of a Latin scholar haha.

Pope Maximus Decimus Meridius, Commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions.

oh right. Because PR is SO important to the Christian message. Careful, your bias is definitely showing. BTW, at nearly 62 Iā€™m not too young to remember Pope Benedict, OR Pope John Paul II and I, or even Pope Paul VI, so a little less of your selective memory and slant, if you please.

I mean it certainly does helpā€¦

But both Bxvi and F have had their gaffes, whether concerning the shuffling of priests or the existence of hell.

If I ever become a cardinal Iā€™ll urge the pope that we vote to take that name šŸ˜‚

I suspect it will be a name that either hasnā€™t been used for centuries, or never used before. In our cultureā€™s need for instantly categorizing people, the choice of a papal name is fraught with the risk of unintentional (or intentional) signals: the choice of Pius would be a signal, as would John or John Paul. A new popeā€™s first decision shouldnā€™t have to be seen as a telegraphing of his agenda or entire papacy.

But, thatā€™s what it isā€¦

Francis - A new agenda, devoted to the poor and the enviornment
Benedict- No nonsense, a focua on tradition and orthodoxy
John Paul- A continuation of the mission of v2ā€¦
