Definitely spiritual reading. The spiritual masters know what they are talking about. I also like to go Adoration and I have a good devotional book that really helps me make the push and has beautiful sentiments, so I am very indebted to it.

The Imitation of Christ by Tomas a Kempis. It was a turning point to grow spiritually.

I was really suffering with backsliding every day, almost every hour. I simply couldn’t raise myself up to holiness no matter what I tried. I spent 40 years in the desert this way. Then something happened. I received a mailing from one of the religious orders I give to, and it had a card with a novena on it. A very simple paragraph to the sacred heart, very short and simple. So I gave it a try, the first novena I completed successfully. And, what do you know - it worked! I was cured. It completely changed my head around, and the desire to sin left me. I still feel the urge to sin from time to time, but it is under control and swamped by a day begun with prayer, fortified with prayer throughout the day, and ended with prayer at bed time. A kind of a miracle, really.

  1. Good spiritual directors/priests
  2. Various books, websites, CCC to study the Faith more deeply.

Deciding to submit to whatever the Holy Spirit had in store for me and receiving the baptism in the Holy Spirit (NOT a sacrament) at a life in the Spirit Seminar.

Everything changed after that. Slowly at first, then it accelerated. No looking back.

I would say fasting. When I fast, I have to depend on God to get me through the day-- effort alone is not enough. The more I trust Him, the closer I get to Him. 😀

Marian Consecration. I read a book that prepares a person for Marian Consecration. I encourage everyone to buy and read that book.

Wow! That’s amazing! We’re you familiar with the devotion to the sacred heart before? Afterward did you read more about it or increase your devotion to it in some way?

These are all such great answers! It’s amazing to see all the things God can use 🙂

God’s grace.
It hard to say just one thing. I’d highly recommend Adoration, as often and for as long as possible. Daily mass (although this is a sacrament), it is not always adhered to on a daily basis. The devotion of the Sacred Heart, which requires Adoration in part - maybe I should have put that first, it’s rewards are along the lines of the rosary, massive and gigantic leaps and bounds. Oh yes the rosary, say that daily. Oh and the Divine Office (liturgy of the hours). Oh sorry this is not just one thing - though the first sentence is.

Fasting (of a sort). Giving up activities that I enjoy a lot and using that new free time to read Scripture or spiritual books helps me to grow in holiness.
