People should find careers that are labors of love for them
“Labor of love” for me is what I do for free in my spare time.

Of course, I also love getting paid every month, so the trick is to find a career where the benefits outweigh the costs. It doesn’t have to be something one loves though. It’s going to have plenty of headaches built in and I’d just as soon not have the stuff I truly love to do get ruined by headaches.

I remember someone once making the obvious point “if going to work was fun, they wouldn’t pay you to do it.”

Obviously, you shouldn’t choose a career that’s going to make you miserable. But if someone expects every day at work to be lovely, that’s probably an unrealistic expectation.

Then the more realistic aspiration might be “find something to do that has some features you love, and other features that you dislike less, than you would some other fields”.

I found that I was phenomenally good at counting money, it brought me a certain pleasure (yes, it is possible), so that’s what I did. Not as much fun as finding causal patterns in history or chopping philosophy, theology, and logic into little pieces and putting it all back together again, but close enough.

“Finding something” can be an insurmountable task for a surprisingly substantial percent of the population. For various reasons people feel “trapped”, “cursed”, or see “no way out” from an unhappy life. Finding the right career is even a challenge for those who are among the most capable of people.

Trust me, if I hit the Powerball tonight I will be immediately going into new lines of work. I would love to be an animal rights lawyer for example. Animals do not have money to pay me, unfortunately.

Health care wasn’t my first love, although I enjoy the work of taking care of people (the “work” is not the same as the “job”) and it’s meaningful.

But like all the rest of the posters here, I need to keep the lights on.

I would encourage anyone looking for serious Catholic fellowship and discussion to give Res Publica Christiana or “The Republic” a look. It leans conservative/traditional, but it is very Christ-centered, and we value being faithful to Christ and His Church above all else.
Seems to be a pattern lol. Thanks for the suggestion, definitely gonna check it out.

I am still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up. 🙂

I have read some nice and interesting posts on Reddit but I don’t like the layout, it seems to busy for me.

I know. Sometimes it is too late, once you realize that you haven’t chosen your ideal career — and people can change throughout life, what once suited a person just fine, doesn’t work anymore.

I don’t have a Powerball ticket tonight. I just buy them sporadically, and usually as part of a total $10 lottery ticket purchase, mixing it up with various games and scratch-offs, and obviating the need for change to be returned to me. Due to the pandemic I rarely use cash, and in our state, lottery tickets are cash-only.

You have just given me an idea for a thread over in The New Kids On The 'Net.

If anyone is on St Isidore’s Lounge, please send me an invite code.

They won’t let me join without one.

That one won’t let me register. May be a glitch in the software.😭

Edit: Can’t message you because your profile is private.

Could you message me, please?
Hi friend 🙂

I haven’t tried it myself, but I’ve heard that you can PM a “profile: private” person by using the @username function within the text of your PM? So the system sort of works around and shows them that way? I’m not sure who you direct the PM itself to, though.

Or maybe I’m misunderstanding and the point is to start a new PM from scratch (in your inbox, not from clicking a profile icon), and manually address it to Tis, and she receives it that way?

Hope you get through. 🙂

Guys, with sincere concern: Please reconsider placing all your eggs in that basket, unless you know something I don’t. I read in another thread that the admin of that site hasn’t been active there since 2017 or something? And the admin is the only one who can appoint mods etc. And I imagine the admin could close the entire thing down same-day on a whim.
Suggestion: each of us can register on multiple forums, so if Catholic Common Sense doesn’t work out we can all still meet somewhere else.

And if I’m stating the obvious, well…I suppose no harm done. 🙂
