I had the talk with my mother this afternoon. I apologized for hurting her feelings and I explained my feelings and where I’m coming from about them. She went on with her feelings and I listened intently.

She went on to talk about the sex abuse scandals and I explained to her that yes, we’ve had men that failed and we had the cover up. I explained to her that the Church is cleaning house and that when a priest is accused, he’s pulled from his duties pending an investigation and if the accusation holds water, the Church hands the offender over to the law.

She believes that the Church wouldn’t hand an offender over to secular authorities and we’d just hand him over the the Holy Father.

That seemed to mollify her.

My Dad then stepped in mentioning the witch trials. I accepted that it happened.

I’m pretty much going to respect her feelings and beliefs and hear her out; but when her beliefs and mine, I explained to her that I’m not just parroting the Church because that’s what I believe; conflict; I’ll just say that’s what you believe.

Mmm wait… is he aware that historically Protestants burned more witches than Catholics ever did? not that it was in anyway ok but let us be clear this was not a Catholic exclusive.

I wasn’t sure historically where to stand on that. I do know that we weren’t the only people burning witches back then.

My family is drastically ignorant of what really went on back in the Early Modern period. My Dad still thinks that Protestants fled to America to escape Catholic persecution.

Now that I remember: My Dad believes the Catholic witch burnings were aimed at Protestants and that’s “ why Protestants are mad at the Catholic Church. “

In fact: I had to explain the history of the Lutheran movement to them. They’re sadly ignorant of history and their pastors don’t correct that.

This is how ill formed of Lutherans they are: When my son went through his “ I don’t want to exist “ thing; my parents offered to set up a dreamcatcher over his bed. I cringed at the thought and said no; I’d prefer a blessed crucifix. My mother gave me a disgusted look when I said that.

As for the brutal battlefields:

It’s not that they violate any rules on language or name calling or anything like that. It’s basically that they come at us with a push us against the wall, take no prisoners, concede no points, reference and quote anything they can, including our Catechism; trying to prove and read their doctrines into anything they get their hands on. Anytime one of us pins them down on something, he either evades into something else or dismisses it out of hand; even saying we’re playing semantics. One of them even quoted Saint James 2:25 backwards as an attempt to prove Sola Fide.

If a Catholic missteps, misquotes or even shows a crack in his faith; they surround him like sharks smelling blood in the water or like a knight going too far forward of friendly lines and gets surrounded by peasant infantry and then they just pound on him mercilessly.
Do you see the highlighted language
Talking to other Christians need not be conflict and war like. There need be no winners and losers.

If this kind of attitude is outwardly expressed in your mothers home, while you are a guest, disharmony is created. Work on another way of discourse. Practice it online and at home.

So, if I’m understanding you right; drop the War attitude and adopt Jesus’ attitude of loving others even as they abuse you?

If people abuse you, walk away from them. A ‘war attitude’ won’t get you anything but war in return. Having a ‘war attitude’ with your family is unproductive, especially when the situation is already so complicated.

🤔 Difficult for me. I’ve always had a rather warlike mindset. But, I do need to let it go and drop it.

Yes, and if you feel you are being abused on a thread, flag it, and get off it. We have a choice, we can turn off the computer, mute a thread, flag those offending us, walk away.
At home, IMHO don’t get into conflict with your parents. Your sons will learn to get into conflict with you and their grandparents.
IMHO I would not be discussing burning witches around young children, one of whom is scared of hell already and who are both still in the mourning the loss of their mother.

Have you ever noticed how peaceful holy people are, and how humble. It is a grace.

Peace be with you.
