Yes, but then in the very end it is grace that got them there and I think they understand that. Don’t they?
Yeah, that’s one of those things you could argue all day long about (along w/ works not being “necessary” for salvation, only faith, but if you don’t produce good works, that’s “proof” you’re not saved. But you don’t need works, only faith. But if you don’t have them, you’re probably not saved. But you only need faith. But… 🤷 :whacky: ). It’s hard to totally deny the need for grace, as it’s ALL OVER the bible (St. Paul, especially talks a lot about it), but Sola Fides like to emphasis that it’s a free gift, we can do nothing to get it. But you have to have faith (and only faith). But, if you have to have faith, isn’t that a work? If grace was truly a free gift wouldn’t everybody be saved? I think you can get around this if you believe in predestination (double predestination works even better), but not all nonCatholics do 🤷 .

In Christ,

Ellen

Yes it can get confusing trying to understand some Protestant denominations. We can go in circles with some issues on faith & morals.

I guess there aren’t many Protestants that want to respond in this thread. What’s the matter, you don’t like to see similarities in our beliefs? I would think if we can discuss similarities in some of our beliefs that you would jump at the chance. 🤷 It’s better than arguing. I see at least one Protestant in here (could’ve missed others, don’t know) Where are the rest? 😦

That’s so true!

I just notices that!

They reamed me for causing debates,
but when a thread about likenesses is posted,
their nowhere to be found!

LOL!

Even the person who posted this was pretty nasty to me!

If you read the initial posts here, she asked for likenesses,
I posted some, then she goes off on me and puts me down.

If we were in a room, I could imagine her making a big scene
and turning around and making a grand exit out of the room slamming the door behind her.

And for what?

Because I posted ‘exactly’ what she asked for.

Similarities.

I guess she didn’t like my answer(s).

Oh well.

🤷

By the way, the “anti-Mary” threads are lit up like a Christmas tree.

😦

And they blame “us”?

🤷

Hey you know my thoughts on this…😛

It’s just so much easier to argue about Mary than some other things.

But can I blame “you” just a little bit? Puuuuh-leeeease?

I’ll ask “Mother May I?” :rotfl:

Don’t be talkin’ bout my momma!

LOL!

Yeah, you can blame me (more than) a little!

LOL!

Hmmm…after verbally raping me,
I wonder where the author of this thread is.

This post is the perfect example of projection.

2ndGen, you will be a better apologist if you spend more energy disseminating Catholic teaching rather than decimating other people.

Okay there are many threads outside of this one that can debate theology.

HOW about a thread that focuses on LEARNING from Catholics to Protestants how the live out their faith. NOT debate whether the fact that works get you salvation or the Church or it doesn’t.

How about the details…Christ intended us to follow his example…to follow him.

What are some ways that you feel that you personal follow the teaching of Christ?

What are some ways that you fall short of following the example set forth by Christ?

If we are honest, we have answers for both.

I’d like to see more discussion about actions in our faith instead of hogging more threads debating what generations have debated that really don’t matter…because God will judge us all one day to see who is correct…how about we LEARN maybe from one another ways to do a better job of living out the example and our salvation.
The Sacraments
My prayer life in particular the Divine Office
My devotion to Mary
and by following the Commandments

I am a sinner of course I will fall short.

Elizabeth!

You magnificent Christian you!

You just pointed out something sooooo beautiful!

The question included how we feel that we fall short of following the example of Christ, right?

Now, what example did Jesus set for His blessed mother?

He loved her!

So if a Christian doesn’t love Mary, they aren’t following the example set by Christ!

I guess that’s one example you can say you follow and “don’t” fall short on!

👍

Well I apologize for that. They are wrong in using it that way if indeed that is what they implied in their statements.

Well then that is you reading into people’s statements here. I’m sure that there are some Catholics out there that use that word in a bad way but I say that only if they imply it that way by actually saying it.

I cannot accuse someone of using a word in a certain way that they are not if they don’t specify in their post. I certainly would not like for someone to say that I’m saying one thing when I’m saying something else just because they want to read something into my comment when it is not there. I believe in do unto others so I try not to read something into a statement if it’s not there written out and specified.

So by saying that you don’t like when people use the word Protestant, you are generalizing and you think that all Catholics use that word in a derogatory way. Believe me, I think most Catholics do not use that in a bad way, and if they do, they are wrong and I am sorry for that. Please forgive us? http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i85/Alegre-Fe/Emoticons/Flowers.gif ❤️
I was just saying it’s not hard to see why people start taking it negatively. I could start listing out ways Catholics on this forum used it that were very rude, but I don’t keep lists of things like that. I’d have to go compile one and frankly it’s not that important to me. I didn’t say all catholics use it that way (In fact, I’m fairly certain I said I’m glad they don’t!)

  • The Trinity - One God: Three persons; Father, Son & Holy Spirit
  • The Holy Spirit is the Third person of the Trinity
  • Gifts of the Holy Spirit
I have to disagree w/ the 3 bolded statements. Not all nonCatholic Christians believe in the Trinity-Oneness Pentacostals don’t. They believe that Jesus is God, and ONLY Jesus is God. I think that falls under the heresy of Modalism (Jesus only being God, just assuming different roles at different times?), but their belief in the Divinity of Christ would qualify them as Christians, no? Due to that, the Holy Spirit, for them, obviously wouldn’t be the 3rd Person of the Trinity, simply Jesus’ spirit.

Not all Christians believe in the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Baptists (the more fundamental stripes, anyway), do not. At least, they don’t believe the gifts “are for today”, they think they ended w/ the Apostles (kinda like Apostolic succession and oral tradition 😃 ).

As for the 1st one, I think Sola Fida Protestants believe in grace, they just believe that the only way to get grace is by having faith (alone).

As for the things we could learn from each other: Most Catholics could definately learn to read the bible more (then they’d realize that they hear it every day at mass 👍 ). NonCatholics could learn that “tradition” isn’t a bad word and IS Scriptural, as well as the value of redemptive suffering (and that it doesn’t mean Jesus’ sacrifice “wasn’t enough”).

In Christ,

Ellen
I’m afraid I’d argue that people who don’t believe in the Trinity are no t Christians. Therefore they can’t be non-Catholic Christians either.

What definition of “Christian” are you using?

I don’t think defining Christian as “People who believe Jesus is God” is very clear or accurate.

Really? Could you point how I put you down or was nasty to you? Disagreement does not equal an attack or being “nasty”. Accusing someone of verballing raping you when they defend themselves, as you did, is…sad. Your assertion is far worse, IMO.
Even the person who posted this was pretty nasty to me!

I don’t see where she went off on you or put you down. She seemed to disagree that you were on topic. Her thread; she decides.
If we were in a room, I could imagine her making a big scene and turning around and making a grand exit out of the room slamming the door behind her.
This is where a got a significant hint of projection. And you know what? Making an exit, grand or not, is often the only option when one is being provoked or insulted, especially by a bully.
And for what?
Because I posted ‘exactly’ what she asked for.
Similarities.
Not in her opinion.

Your “Oh, well” isn’t as sanguine as you would like us to believe. All your other posts in reference to the OP would seem to indicate otherwise.

Please don’t take offense but I have to agree with Bruised Reed on this one.

I also feel that you did not stay on track with the topic. I saw that even before the OP stated that you did not quite answer her question. I also think you have been a bit harsh in some of your posts.

I hope that this post coming from a fellow Hispanic will enlighten you just a wee bit. I have to admit that sometimes I am embarrassed by the behavior of some Hispanics. I don’t mean to get racial here but this is so true. It seems that the so-called “hot blooded latin” goes overboard sometimes and it embarrasses me and I find myself needing to apologize for our race.

I’m not perfect and you kind of remind me of me on how I used to be 15-20 years ago, even sometimes as recently as 10 years ago. I pray every day to have peace in my heart and not lash out at people just because they do not agree with me. I used to be prideful and I admit I still am sometimes, but I am far from what I used to be and that is only by the Grace of God. I am much older than you 2nd Gen so I hope you will also learn just as I did, and still am.

My signature is there for a reason. I do not like confrontation. I prefer Peace, the Peace of God.

You are in my prayers.

As a cradle Catholic I owe much of my Love for the Lord to my father. He is a devout Catholic, he participates in our parish, he prays the rosary when we are on vacation. He demonstrates a love that I see very few people ever show to anyone. He works for himself as an accountant. He sacarfices everyday not blood or material goods but his time to provide for our family. He not only provides the money to pay the morgage, but for most of my life he has cooked for us, cleaned up after us, and helped us when we needed help. This love he has shown to our family I can tell is not of any man but the Love of Christ inside of him.

I have lived a less then perfect life so far compaired to what I have seen in my father. I hope that as I continue to grow in my faith that I too can display the unconditional love of Christ to everyone I meet just as my Father does not just to our family but to all of his clients and friends (Protestant, Gnostic, Islamic, homosexual, poor, rich) you name it I’m sure he has a client that fits in with that trait. Just because he doesn’t accept someone choices or their life style does not alienate them from the Love of Christ that radiates from him.

Faith in Christ to me is rejecting the world and Loving all those around you. It’s not about making 6 figured income or having a big house or a new car. Its about trusting in Christ and his love for all of us that we may share it with all we meet. I truely believe words are cheap and that only Love can convert the hardest hearts to Christ.

Back from Purgatory!

😃

Ok, now that I can speak on my behalf, in the interest of “not” kicking a sleeping dog, I will only say this…you have no idea what was said to me to have made me speak as I did and I was only reponding to what was said to me.

Because the posts “mysteriously” dissappeared, I cannot quote anybody, but let me say this…God knows that I did not engage anybody with ill intent…I responded to what was addressed to me and to my faith. And I will defend my faith. There was never any reason for my personal faith to be attacked.

Having said that, allow me to suggest that before anybody goes about the business of cyberly correcting anybody else or passing judgement (outside of the forum’s moderators), you should actually know what you’re commenting on. One only sees what they see on the board, but not neccessarily “everything” that’s transpired. Making an uninformed correction only brings about more disharmony.

But, I’ve been paroled and I am happy to be back!

Thank you CAF!

(I’ll be good from now on…:o …and I won’t allow others to manipulate my behaviour.)

👍

There is much confusion on this forum of what a Protestant is.
Protestants are the group of believers in Christ that protested to the RC CLERGY HIERARCHY, and the many extra-biblical practices such as penances, purgatory, prayers to the saints, etc.
They followed in agreement with men like Martin Luther.
Then, there are groups who were never in the RC church and continued to follow the Scriptures only like the Anabaptists, Puritans and others.

What are some ways that you feel that you personal follow the teaching of Christ?

I** participate in InterFaith groups, particularly those Christians who have “difficulty” with one another. I have volunteered as an associate member for the Sisters of Mercy, a Catholic group of sisters who work with the poor, and their AIDS house for women and children, I was pleased they welcomed a Friend into their area of ministry.**

I seek to work toward the cause of peace. I support peace organizations such as American Friends Service Committee and Friends Committee on National Legislation.

I** seek to answer “that of God” in each person I meet, I seek to value the “worth of persons” and try…sometimes failingly to minister to “the least of these”.**

What are some ways that you fall short of following the example set forth by Christ?

I find myself lax in following Friend’s disipline by not attending First Day Meeting as I often as I should/could.

I** have “sluffed off” from volunteering at some of our local food banks and food kitchens…so much time these days are required at work to “make ends meet”. I find if I would “simplify” my life instead of indulge myself, I would probably be more faithful. While I don’t typically make New Years resolutions, I have decided to find ways to live more simply this year and see if I can free up some “time” for things that minister to the spirit instead of gratify the body.**

If we are honest, we have answers for both.
