What should I do with a Chick tract?

Am I allowed to throw it away, even though it has Scripture verses and pictures of the Eucharist and Pope?

I generally find them in the stalls in public restrooms. I find them very useful.

Of course you are allowed to throw it away.

Perhaps you are confusing any old book with religious content (fine to throw away) with blessed objects (not fine to throw away).

Items that are blessed by a Catholic priest or deacon become sacramentals and should be disposed of by burying or burning.

A Chick tract or other religiously oriented pamphlet or book can be disposed of in the garbage, shredder, fire place, etc.

I would read it all and find out why it is wrong. When I taught RCIA we examined “The Death Cookie” page by page, and refuted every bit of it. It is a good learning opportunity for adult Catholics.

That’s a good idea. You can use Jack Chick’s own tracts to teach and at the same time defend the Catholic faith. It that isn’t irony, I don’t know what is.

After it has served its purpose you can toss it into the recycling bin.

Burn it with fire!

In fact, use it on a barbecue as a firelighter or something… might as well get some practical benefit out of it, provided you don’t think it’ll spoil the food…

Just throw it away, or recycle it. “Burning” or destroying it because of its content would be superstitious and callous toward the martyrs who died by fire.

It would merely make sure no one else could possibly read it. A shredder, as someone suggested, would work just as well. None of the martyrs would object either way.

Most importantly is that no one else takes possession of it. So, when you dispose of it make sure that it is either shredded or burned as was previously suggested.

This is what I would do. I have any number of questionable books, etc. (like a New World bible translation) for research purposes. And internet links to the worst Jack Chick tract ever “Lisa”.

ETA: It’s about sexual abuse. Even if the subject isn’t a trigger for someone it is a heartbreaking and infuriating tract.

Here is a winning strategy for just this situation
  1. write catholic refutations in the margins
  2. place in envelope
  3. place Jack Chick’s mailing address on envelope
  4. place stamp on envelope
  5. Place in mail
  6. ???
  7. PROFIT!
I use something similar when I get the junkmail credit card applications… I pull out all the loose advertisements from any other junkmail I get, stuff it into their “postage paid” envelope, add a note that says “take me off your mailing list” and mail it back to them at a weight that will require at least four stamps… which they will have to pay for. Passive aggressive win! (and I’m not sure, but I do think I receive fewer of these applications now…).
