Things are going okay today. I feel a bit more contentment as we progress through our first week of homeschooling for the new school year. But right now it is still very hard. I don’t feel a desire to escape so much as a wishing I could have help. My husband is still away on a long training trip and he won’t be back until this weekend. So I am across the country from all my family and old friends, and now my husband is also across the country in a different direction from us.

We have been getting out to play with neighbors everyday. And we went to Toddler Time today. And we are doing far better than I anticipated we would starting out the new year with our new curriculum. We had to do a curriculum switch because last year was just plain AWFUL, and it was totally a problem of a curriculum misfit.

So while I am cheered by our baby step successes, it is lonely and super duper hard right now. Could I please ask for your prayers to support me in the next couple days? The weekend still seems so far away…

Try to put off what you can until your husband comes back, and try to do something you will personally find fun. When my dad went elk hunting, for instance, my mom used to have breakfast for dinner. Dad didn’t happen to like that himself, but Mom did and all of us kids thought it was great, especially if we got whipped cream in there somewhere! (She’d have all sorts of stuff for meals that he was happy she served when he didn’t have to be there for it, LOL!) It is kind of fun to change the routine in small ways like that. It’s not less work, but it is different and the change of pace is enjoyable.

You may have just changed my life!

Almost the only thing I use bleach for is for the mold problems in our bathroom, which was painted with regular (non-high-moisture-tolerating) paint when the previous owners of our house put the house up for sale. Not just the wall but tub, shower tiles, floor…everything. It is…the worst. But we can’t afford to redo it (and it does need redoing, it’s the original everything from when the house was built 50+ years ago) and I get frustrated all the time that even bleach doesn’t work for long.

I keep borax handy for ants and for my homemade laundry detergent…and now I’ll have to try this and see where we get! Thank you!
I shouldn’t say bleach doesn’t kill mildew, but apparently it doesn’t inhibit future growth as well as borax does. Even all things being even, I loved not having the fumes of bleach, too. Borax does not give off any fumes.

Praying…that first week of homeschool is soooo tough! A veteran homeschool friend of mom shared with me that she learned after a lot of trial and error that her family adjusted better if she started homeschool near the first of August. She’d only do a couple of subjects the first week and then slowly add in the rest of the subjects in the subsequent weeks. It allowed her to make the necessary changes to curriculum gradually if there needed to be any and her boys balked less and things went a lot smoother getting into their “groove.”

Also, there is nothing wrong if you declare a “reading day” every now and then when you are burned out and exhausted. Get some good audiobooks to keep handy (Audible is wonderful 😉 )

I love this quote and it gives me great encouragement:

“Just as the carpenters of old built beautiful cathedrals for the glory of God, so do you. Yes, you - you work tireless day after day over a geography lesson, a math test, a laundry pile, a kitchen sink. Those are the moments wherein you build cathedrals for God.” ~From Teaching From Rest

What a beautiful quote!

I haven’t been following all along but thought I’d check in today. I’m an older person but lived by the above and I’d like to encourage the younger mothers and say that it all was worth it!

I didn’t homeschool, but did my best at all the rest and gave up a lot of my own life to do it.

I gave my own advice to the OP but later read that to others it seemed like the advice was for her to go ahead and kill herself. So it’s nice to hear that there are “modern” mothers who are willing to give their life to build a cathedral for God. I love it. Thanks so much for posting.

Someone else had a good idea too. She called it Feet Off The Ground. Everyone goes to their own room for 30 minutes (or so, can’t remember) to read and relax. Told my daugher about this - she’s in her early 40’s and has a 15 and 12 year old and also needs a break every now and then.

Yes. Let’s encourage each other to do what the Lord calls us to do.

And if it seems like we’re just going to have a nervous breakdown at any moment, well, that’s normal and He’ll help us to get over it. It shouldn’t frighten us, we’re only creatures of God, as one of my favorite priests tells me all the time.

A couple of scripture readings (although I see it is not normal for this forum):

**Mathew 12:28

Come to me all who are weary and heavy-laden and I will give you rest.
**

It’s referring to the yoke of the law the pharisees had put on the Israelites but it can refer to our own burdens as well. If we look to Jesus, He will always comfort us in the end.

**1 Corinthians 10:13

No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful, He will not allow you to be tempted beyong what you can bear, but when tempted He will also provide a way out.**

In context it’s speaking about sin and temptation, but isn’t it temptation when you feel God has called you to a certain task, as the OP said, and then you find difficulty doing it? Ole’s split hooves does like to get into every act. This very forum could have been a way for the OP to let off some steam and get some encouragement!

I think I’m carrying on…

God bless you all
