What was the best song you heard at mass this weekend

Yep, it’s another one of my opinion polls…
What was the most liturgically appropriate song you heard played at mass this weekend, for the feast of the Nativity of John the Baptist?
If you don’t mind, also tell me why you chose it.
 
The best song I heard this morning at Mass was “O Holy Name.” It was played automatically on the church’s 53-year old electronic carillon. The music inside was the same old OCP junk, and not a word was mentioned about St. John the Baptist at the homily.
 
I liked “For All The Saints.”

Very appropriate for the Feast Day of St. John the Baptist’s B-day.

I’ve always loved that song. I love the instrumental downbeat, followed by the congregation joining in on beat 2! And the Alleluias are very majestic at the end.

We also did a song about John the Baptist that was set to the melody of “All Creatures of our God and King.” Another good melody. The words were straight biography of John the Baptist, so again, very appropriate.

I usually attend the 6 P.M. vigil Mass in our parish because that is the one that my husband ushes. It is a “traditional” music mass, with mainly traditional hymns and folk hymns from the Gather Hymnal and the Missal. Usually they use “Mass of Creation,” which I believe is Haugen’s.

This Mass is also called the “Smelly Mass” because so many elderly people attend. Very few families and young children, although there are several who always come.

I occasionally play the piano in my Protestant Gospel style! The people are very appreciative. They seem pretty laid back, though. At times we’ve had no cantor, and everyone just rolls with it. No fuss.

It’s a very friendly Mass and a great way to spend a Saturday evening.

I have always loved that downbeat, and when I play it on the organ, I use heavy reed pedal stops especially for that song.
 
We sang “Comfort, Comfort O My People”. While it is technically an Advent hymn, it was fitting for the solemnity.
 
The High TLM this morning we sang Salve Regina. Excellent !!

I attended Liturgy at the Saturday Vigil. The Maronite Bishops opted to celebrate the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul this weekend.

The best music???:

You have united, O Lord,
Your divinity with our humanity
and our humanity with Your divinity
Your life with our mortality
and our mortality with Your life.
You have assumed what is ours,
and you have given us what is Yours,
for the life and salvation of our souls.
To You, O Lord, be glory for ever.

It was chanted in Arabic or Syriac (I’m not positive which one) by the Antonine Sisters here. Very beautiful.

I went to my old church today and they played that same song!!! I love it!
 
I believe the song was called “Refiner’s Fire.”

I’m not sure if I heard it before, but I really enjoyed it.

I love that song! I used to sing occasionally with a LifeTeen band, and we did that fairly frequently, with the refrain in parts unaccompanied - it was so moving and so beautiful. This is one of the few exceptions to my personal “classical music only” rule!

This week I played (guitar) Blest Be the Lord, Christ Be Our Light, The Cry of the Poor, and City of God. I considered For All the Saints, but eventually went with my other selections. Why? The songs seemed to fit liturgically and they are some of the 100+ songs in my repetoire. In addition, the congregation knows these songs.

I and a young piano player are the only musicians my parish has. He plays the late Sunday morning Mass, I play the early Sunday Mass and, when I can, the vigil Mass. I play that OCP stuff because that is what I know (my repetoire is approximately 125 hymns). Please think about this and your musicians before you complain about the music selections. If you don’t like them, find a way to suggest what you would like to hear. If it’s within your musician’s ability he/she will likely try to oblige you. If not, then sing the songs that are selected as well as you can to the glory and praise of our Lord.
 
Last week and today the choir sang a Filipino song called, “Kordero Ng Diyos” which translates “Lamb of God”, after we held hands. The Church is mostly Filipino populated. I was so happy when they started singing it because it’s a non-Filipinos there got to hear a new language coming from the only Catholic country in Asia. Almost brought a tear to my eye because I love the song.

edit: This song has nothing to do with the Nativity of John the Baptist. Sorry I thought you were asking for any favorite song sung today. I don’t know what we sang.
 
“Here I Am to Worship”, sung by a great group of kids from Youth who formed their own music group, and Father let them perform their music for Mass. (Excellent job Gabriella, Kate, Nick, and David, & ‘others’ BTW). It was also the song my youngest’s class sang for 1st Communion. :dancing:

Personally, I like a little tradition or even Latin in my Hymn/Him…
 
“Now Thank We All Our God”. Love it, love it, love it. Always makes me cry.

I think it was chosen so we could thank God for St. John The Baptist!
 
Faith of our Fathers - it’s a personal favorite. When I was a little girl I had a children’s record with hymn’s on it and Faith of Our Fathers was on it. It’s still one of my favorites.
 
“Jesus, My Lord, My God, My All” as a Communion meditation. An exquisitely gentle solo sung by our organist. Singing usually distracts me during my thanksgiving after Communion, but this didn’t — it became my prayer.
 
Canticle of Zachary was great. I usually do not like Joncas’ music, but this one was perfect for the Feast of St. John the Baptist. We also sang “Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones” which was beautiful as well.

I liked the chance to use Canticle of Zachary on a Sunday…it’s consigned to nothing but a morning prayer hymn normally.
