I am a bit late, but our menu was this:

Appetizers- Twice baked potato halves
Stuffed mushrooms
Hot crab dip with crackers
Code:
  Entree- Lasagne
              Meatballs
              Chicken Parmigiana
              Bread or rolls

Dessert- Cookies and candy we received as a gift
(no one was really hungry for anything else anyway ;))
The great thing about cooking a big Fish thing on Christmas Eve (–7 kinds of fish and some Linguine) is that between the leftovers from then and Christmas, I won’t have to cook for a few days! 👍

I hope everyone had a wonderful and warm Christmas with their family or those they love. 🙂

I remember spending a Christmas eve dinner with some Italian friends. They had seven kinds of seafood dishes. They called it the Feast of the Seven Fishes. Is this the same thing? I remember they called it the Feast of the Seven Fishes and it was a tradition in Sicily.

Yep! That’s it. I am half Italian despite my Irishmom name! Seven fish, one for each of the sacraments I was always told. And this was the first year that I could actually make 7 different fish and not use fishsticks as one of the 7, lol! My children’s tastes are finally growing up!

Turkey with cornbread/pecan/mushroom stuffing and gravy
Roasted mashed squash
Red cabbage (DH loves this, his mother makes it, I’m not as big a fan)
Roasted potatoes with garlic
Assorted herring (again, a DH thing)
Homemade bread

Then for dessert:
“Lumberjack” cake (contains dates, pears, and coconut)
Mince pie (another DH only thing)
Assorted cheeses
Apricot struesel

We had prime rib, hash brown potato casserole with cheese, french green bean casserole with sour cream and garlic croutons and pumpkin crunch.

We had turkey, stir fried green beans, baked potatoes, corn, curry vegetables and raspberry mousse cake. 🙂

i really SERIOUSLY go all out for thanksgiving, cooking for days, have an entire page-long menu.

after that, i can’t stand to think of really going all out AGAIN a month later. we mix it up ever year. some years lasagna. some years we go and buy really good looking steaks and grill (even in knee deep snow). some years i do a big polish meal, some years we go to my moms.

this year we went to moms and had lots of appetizers, ham, baked beans, loaded mashed potatoes, baked chicken and rolls. not too jazzy, but very good and filling…it’s more about the time we spend together than anything.

when my polish-immigrant grandparents were still alive, my bucia made a HUGE Christmas spread full of polish foods. it was really about family and our immediate family (my grandparents, their kids and their kids) totaled about 50 people. since they’re gone, we all barely see each other anymore.

next year we’re talking about doing something totally different, maybe traveling somewhere for the holidays…

Now that’s a true Texas holiday meal. (I love me some brisket!)
It’s one of the reasons I can never leave here.

👍

HEB has some really good, pre-cooked and LEAN brisket. I would love to have a smoker and learn how to do my own - nothing beats that - but that won’t happen for a few years and by then, it will just be hubby and me so hardly worth the trouble.
