What would the world be like if Jesus was never here?

I’m not sure what any of this has to do with the original question or my response to it.

Are you suggesting that I have somehow denied the church’s role in the building of our civilization or that I am ignorant of medieval history?

I give the Catholic Church due credit for it’s role in building our civilization. Without the Catholic Church, the world today would certainly be a very different place. But that has nothing to do with the original question of what the world would be like if Jesus never existed. As I see things it is entirely possible that the Catholic religion was built on a myth, which makes the existence of an actual historical “Christ” figure irrelevant to the world we see today.

Sorry Gm, I was in a real hurry responding and I was only able to take a glance at your post. I had to quote someone quick and seeing that you were an atheist sealed my decision. However, I am glad that you acknowledge the Church for its importance in History. Atheists on this site are in my experience, one of the more respectable, knowledgeable and intellectually honest on the net. On other sites, they come across as insulting, condescending, emotional and ignorant when it comes to religion and church history. Like yesterday, I have other things I need to attend to. I’ll check back on the thread later tonight.

Thanks for responding. Just to clarify, I am not an atheist. I am an agnostic. The difference is that my worldview allows for the possibility of a god. However, I do not know what a “god” is and I have never heard a definition of the word that I actually believe in. That being said, I do not mind that religious folk think of me as an atheist because chances are I do not believe in the god you believe in anyway. With regard to the Christian god, I am an atheist.

I hope we can chat sometime. Thanks again for responding.

But I think that somewhere, the anti-religion politicals are about to print out a lot of “WWTWBLIJWH” bracelets (with “happy faces” at the end) to counter the “What Would Jesus Do?” (WWJD) bracelets.

A Jesus-less America would greatly please some people - until they HAD it.

It’s nice to know that even before “Jesus was here” in the incarnation, he WAS here as the word. God is everywhere and we are not alone. Or unloved at any time.

This week we ponder the mystery of the Ascension … and the apostles must have asked themselves a question like this … NOW What?! He’s gone! Again.

Pentecost is not far off … and the coming of the Holy Spirit with boldness, truth and charity is ANOTHER thing the world would be destitute without.

We are made to love God and one another. It is so beautiful the way God chose to come to us. Small like the baby in Bethlehem, meek as a poor person, common as a carpenter, and sacrificing as the best friend one could ever have.

I love that God is smaller than me too. And lets me humble myself before children - as much as to the powerful ones. As He did.

We are the body of Christ, and the salt of the earth. We keep things from getting rotten.
Without the Church what would the world be like? Same answer. Worse.

But in a spirit of ecumenism I will now attempt to write a soaring, spirit lifting, hopeful and
inspired Triumphal Atheistic masterpiece of music - to the big, old, accidental, random, nothingness that bumbled into creating us without knowing it.

Why? What has not been said by other non Catholic Saints and Sages, that has been said by Jesus? Did not the world proceed, and does it not still do so, without most of the population “on board?” Even a lot of Christians and even clergy, ours and others?
