What would you do if you won the lotto

According to nbcnews,

“Six states — Delaware, Kansas, Maryland, North Dakota, Ohio and South Carolina — allow winners to remain anonymous.”

Winning one of these huge jackpots would consume your life. 😱

I would set up a philanthropic organization and put most of the money in there. The members of that organization would be as few in number as possible so that there could be transparency and efficiency.

I’d probably have to quit my job to deal with my new job as philanthropist… which to be quite honest isn’t something I’m actually trained in.

This doesn’t really sound like very much fun to me.

Better to win a few million (or even much less) than a few hundred million.

Serious question though:

Wouldn’t God offer appropriate graces to one given so much? I mean, to keep them from idolatry, gluttony, despair, etc? Wouldn’t He grant them the wisdom needed to make decisions that would help them grow in holiness?

Everyone likes to daydream about the good that would come from winning, but I think there is so much more that comes along with the money that is in the “not-good” category.

If he does, some people must ignore them. People have made lots of stupid decisions when they win big. Some have had their lives ruined by winning.

It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, et cetera et cetera.

I’d of course, give some to the Church. Then I’d pay off my mother’s bills and fix up the house. The rest of the money would go into an interest bearing account and I’d live off the interest.

My husband and I would buy a hidden gem of a place in the area he grew up. We would spend the rest of our lives making other people’s lives easier, especially our children and military families.

How in debt are you?
I was thinking the same thing. Phil, you’re “assuming it was a huge lotto win” and it still wouldn’t pull you out of debt? 😮 I mean, when speaking of lotto, I’m thinking ‘huge’ is at least a million dollars, but probably a lot more.

I know this is nosy but any specific causes you’d tithe too?

I found a more detailed list. I like Arizona’s balance between the public’s right to know, while still giving winners time to arrange their lives to protect themselves against the coming onslaught.

From What happens if you win Mega Millions’ $1 billion jackpot?

"CAN I KEEP MY NAME SECRET?

Winners can remain anonymous in six states — Delaware, Kansas, Maryland, North Dakota, Ohio and South Carolina. In Arizona, people who win more than $600 can keep their names secret for 90 days after claiming prizes, but after that names are public record. In Michigan, winners are anonymous unless they win Mega Millions or Powerball prizes."

That was my point-we’re talking almost $600M after taxes. How much debt can one person have?

My husband and I have a simple list.
  1. Pay off debts.
  2. I quit my job and be a SAHM.
  3. We move to the middle of nowhere and go off-grid.
  4. Have as many more kids as humanly possible.
  5. Spend all our free time hiking, fishing, and riding horses somewhere in the middle of no where. <3

I’m guessing he was thinking with a more personalized view when he said that: as far as impact on a person’s life goes, winning $100,000 can be a huge lotto win, whereas winning $100 is not.

But in terms of “let’s talk about what we’d do if we won the current $1 billion prize,” it sounds bizarre 😆

First of all I wish they would spread the prize around more. Who needs $1,000,000,000? Who would even know how to handle it. Instead why not have 1,000 winners of $100,000?

I’m not in a place to donate but any specific organizations and charities you’re willing to give a good word too?
