What would you do if you won the lotto

I would do practical things, I would hire a good lawyer and accountant. The accountant would help me keep down tax hits then and in the long run. I also would get a financial manager, and put most of the money in mutual funds.
I would immediately go to a hotel, without publicity so swarms of people can’t come and ask for money, as handouts or supposed deals for using my money.
I have read about people who win the lottery and soon lose all the money because they give it to people who ask for it.
If I stayed home instead, I would hire people to answer the phone and the door to screen those who want to talk to me. This could be troublesome though, so one thing I would do would be to buy a new house, not giving a forwarding address and having an unlisted phone number.
I would consider giving some of the money away, but see where it would do the most good. This would take some checking. Some of should go to relatives though who really need the money.

I would:
  1. probably not tell anyone, except really close family members. and they would only know because the first thing i would do is free everyone of debt, and try and get everyone comfortable.
  2. hire an administrator to be my “front”
  3. open a soup kitchen.
  4. buy affordable housing so I can rent it out at a low price to people who need it.
  5. open some type of business so I can hire all the decent jobless people at my charity.
  6. my job is to keep volunteering in these places, incognito of course, to see who else I may be able to help.
Yep, thought long and hard about this already. Man o man….if only I could get this done.

First of all I wish they would spread the prize around more. Who needs $1,000,000,000? Who would even know how to handle it. Instead why not have 1,000 winners of $100,000?
And what of the other $900,000,000…? (Just busting on innumeracy 🔢➕➖✖️➗♾️🧮)

Also (once you get the maths worked out), such a scheme would require drawing 1,000 sets of numbers, or some other way of choosing so many winners.

Well, I didn’t win last night. But when I do, yinz’ll be the second to know. 🤑

I don’t know the name of it, but there’s a Catholic charity that you can sponsor a child in another country.
I would probably contribute to that one.

Wouldn’t God offer appropriate graces to one given so much? I mean, to keep them from idolatry, gluttony, despair, etc? Wouldn’t He grant them the wisdom needed to make decisions that would help them grow in holiness?

Everyone likes to daydream about the good that would come from winning, but I think there is so much more that comes along with the money that is in the “not-good” category.
It is sad to see the stories of people who are ruined because of a large windfall. I would hope and pray that should the odds be in my favor, I would be a good steward.

Catholic Charities in your own Diocese, Catholic Dioceses in developing nations would be able to direct you to the most need right there on the ground. Religious orders like Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity.

Asking to join Mar A Lago would be a priority, to give me a good chance to hobnob with my fellow billionaires and discuss the problems we face…

When I was a child of about twelve years old, we used to get in the mail from a magazine that you could enter into their money prize whether you subscribed to their magazine or not. (I think it was one million dollars.)

So, I said to her: “Ma, don’t you want to try to win that money?”, and her response was: “No, it would only complicate my life.”

My mother is a very wise woman! May she rest in the Lord’s peace.

I’ve thought about this waaaay too much. Daydreaming is fun!

1/3 dedicated to family
1/3 dedicated to charity
1/3 dedicated to investments

For family each would get a middle class home paid for and then encourage them to decide on what type of business they would like to have and fund or start them in it. My house would get paid off and redecorated. It is a great house and, for now, I have no desire to move. I’m not a luxury type of person.

Charities would be investigated for how well they are run and the amount going to the actual recipients vs. overhead costs. I’d decide it between local, national and international type organizations.

Investments would include a lot of low cost housing developments. Watching my children try to afford decent housing has made me acutely aware of the problems faced. Some money would go to startups for those trying to get out of poverty, especially to minorities.

All of this depends on how much I actually won but even a lottery af thousands vs. millions can be accommodated in my plans.

Mostly, I would have a ton of fun doing all this!

I’d commission an investigation into how ai ever came up with a ticket . . .

And I certainly wouldn’t donate money to ay diocese or other entity that isn’t done with legal settlements to the past; that simply adds dollar for dollar to the settlement pool . . .

Do you guys think it would be harder to find love after winning the lotto?

Bokbok

IF, I came up the lotto jackpot I think I would set up a charity and a family trust fund , pray twice as hard for discernment, then indulge in giving most all of it away to worthy and needy folks and causes. One of the first things to benefit would be my monthly DD to CAFOD, also a couple of churches in my diocese that could do with repairs and up-dates.

Likely Reader’s Digest.

During the era of the 20c stamp, economists calculated the expected value (average return) of sending it in at 10c–so you were better off keeping the stamp they included!

I think it would be harder to determine if the love was due to you, yourself or due to the money you have. I’d be very careful in my relationships after winning a great sum of money and it’s sad it would be that way but such is reality.

Build as many Adoration Chapels as I could. The world is so noisy - it’s hard to find a place to be quiet so we can hear the “still small voice”. Be still & know that I am God - but not many quiet places to do that. Adoration Chapels are perfect places to get quiet & wait upon the Lord.

Pay off my house and make some long overdue improvements. Buy a van. Have more kids. Pay off my parent’s home. Help out some of my friends and aquaintances who have gotten raw deals. I’ve always thought of opening some sort of boarding house in the city for boys to live while they finish high school, without the distractions of drug and gang culture. I don’t know if the lottery would be enough to pay for that. If not, maybe open some family shelters in my home town?

How in debt are you?
I was thinking the same thing. Phil, you’re “assuming it was a huge lotto win” and it still wouldn’t pull you out of debt? 😮 I mean, when speaking of lotto, I’m thinking ‘huge’ is at least a million dollars, but probably a lot more.
Well… I wasn’t necessarily referring to the $1.6 Billion jackpot.

But a $1 million dollar jack pot wouldn’t leave a lifetime of money after paying of mortgage, debt, etc.

What would you do if you won the lotto?

In a few days, perhaps I’ll know. 💰😁
