i can understand the personal sacrifice that is involved

this is not a “USA” thing

that doesn’t mean it is “right or wrong”

all i can say is that “whipping your own back” is not going to help the Problem of the secularism of the usa

all i am saying, colonel

is that this practice probably does more harm than good, as far as evangelicanism

i’d go ahead & recommend these “back-whippers” pray the Rosary in the same group that witrnessed them mutilate themselves

Nobody beats Catholic Philippinos!

Watch “Filipino man nailed to cross every Good Friday” on YouTube

what is the point of “hurting yourself” for essentialy no reason?

no one (trust me) no one is paying attention to the “self-whippers” ; all 12 of them

basically anybody who “does this” in public is gaining negative attention for RC

you want to do this in private?; i’d’ve recommended you discuss w/ a qualified priest

😦

Jesus didn’t do it nor did He ask the Apostles to do it so I won’t do it either. He only asked that we stay awake and pray with Him in the Garden. He knew that life was tuff enough with all the pain, suffering and penance of just surviving in an unkind world. We are to stay awake and pray.

Self flagellation is quite well known within portions of the Church (and in other faith traditions too), especially in religious Orders and of course Opus Dei. I believe that Vatican 2 was a turning point in discontinuing ‘the discipline’ (or what they call the whips), but not all convents and monasteries put them away. I understand that mostly enclosed communities still use them. It’s all about sexual urges and subduing them. Of course we know from those who practice certain bondage-type sexual behaviors that the whipping only heightens sexual pleasure. Anyway, Martin Luther was quite involved with his spiritual flagellation and we also know John Paul 2 used the discipline regularly.

Read some of the medieval saints, especially the women, and you’ll get a glimpse into the spiritual dynamics of self harm.

It seems like the only to mortify the rebellious senses is to either fast every now and than or take a cold shower.

In the film, ‘Novitiate’, you see how the discipline was used by young novices in the convent. This was just at the time of Vatican 2.

a sort of metal belt with spikes round the inside that cut into your flesh.
19th century fantasy, sorry - this image wanders through mediaval films like a ghost and never occured before the overboarding fantasy of the 19th century men, just like chastity belts 🙂

@SacredHeartBassist , you ask , " Whatever happened to self whipping?"

I don’t know , and it’s not really a subject I have ever been interested in .

But regarding your question , the practice may be around , but rightfully those who pracitise it keep it between themseves , God and their spiritual advisers .

Believe me, I’m very familiar with Opus Dei, it is pretty exaggerated.

The most severe form of penance I’ve heard of is the cilice, which is a narrow band around the upper thigh. It’s not painful, just a slight discomfort. Only celibate members are even allowed to use it, and most Opus Dei members are lay.

Please provide sources to back up your assertion. Thanks in advance.
