No you had it right. A cilice is a barbed metal circlet worn around the upper thigh. A hair shirt is a hair shirt.

I agree it’s probably exaggerated and used mainly by numeraries, along with other mortifications.

Thanks! I’m still waiting for evidence from alice24 to back up her assertion that the cilice was a fictional product of 19th-century fantasy.

I don’t know how “advanced” a practice flagellation is, or even that a spiritual director is always absolutely necessary (though that is the “common wisdom”). I think it depends on degree and intent, among other things. Hermits have done it for centuries, with no lasting ill effects, as have saints and popes. And they were all of exceedingly sound mind.

Catholics today are soft, in my opinion–and I certainly include myself in that assessment. We shun and avoid physical discomfort, let alone pain. Yet pain is inevitable and as a saint famously said,
“Blessed be pain. Sanctified be pain. Glorified be pain!”

Yes, and despite statements to the contrary, some members of Opus Dei do use them as part of a controlled regime of penance and mortification. Hardly a fevered dream of Romantic 19th-century aesthetes, I should think.

This is to mild flagellation what a skull fracture is to a mosquito bite.

I´m laying currently in a hospital (tonsillar op) and don´t have acces to my workplace, sorry. Again, it´s my business, I didn´t studied for nothing at a university. If you have sources, I would be interestd in them 🙂

Interestingly, the idea of painful endurance tests or pain as a gateway to spiritual experience is found across time, cultures and creeds.

But we also have to take into account that at this moment in our culture we are in a mental health crisis, with increasing rates of anxiety, depression and addictions.
Also that most people get their information from the internet and not from books.
I just don’t trust the individual not to screw themselves up greatly by doing practices on their own that they don’t understand.

In the film, ‘Novitiate’, you see how the discipline was used by young novices in the convent. This was just at the time of Vatican 2.
You won´t believe how much time it costs for history teachers at university to get out all the stuff of their students heads in the first semester after they watched 300, vikings or the latest Louis XIV film. I´ve seen interesting tests

The automobile caused the decline in the use of horses.

It just got too difficult to get a decent whip anymore.

It seems as if you are implying that Xena Warrior Princess, Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings aren’t historically accurate?

such a shame the amish people haven´t seen this great investement opportunity 😂

I’m reminded of the case of Matt Talbot, on the way to sainthood. As I recall, when he died they found that he wore one of those discipline chains on his body. No one knew. It was one factor in his cause.
I’ve never quite understood this form of penance. It does not appeal to me.

Maybe the next time I’m up in New Wilmington, or see some of our Amish friends around here when they take their kids to Children’s Hospital, I’ll mention the market for whips to them. Maybe they aren’t familiar with this- not many Amish people saw the “Davinci Code” as they don’t have TV’s.

And here we see it - it´s historical education they lack! As a person happy enough to have a solid educational fudament with Xena and Game of thrones, only Dan Brown let me understand how catholics really behave :roll_eyes:😂

I don’t think so. It may not be used by every member, but it is a common form of penance.
No it isn’t. I know Opus Dei people and they don’t do that. Plus, some of the most know Catholic lay people are Opus Dei, and they don’t do it.

I imagine it’s not just movies and television that have this impact. I love documentaries, but boy do you have to keep your brain on when watching them. So many cable networks produce shows with the look of a documentary, but what is really just entertaining historical fiction. “Ancient Aliens” anyone? 😂
