So, what happens if you mis-spell their name or leave out their middle initial? Also, where is the secret list of allowable write-ins kept?
Your County (or city) Board of Elections has an official list. You have to ask them for it.

I asked at the polling place yesterday where to obtain such a list, and they thought that they had such a list and looked for it, but gave up and made an official phone call. The person on the phone knew who was on the list, but said that the voter is responsible to know who is on the official list. I was told to talk to the write-in candidates themselves to obtain info. I was definitely not told to ask the Board of Elections. The info is not on their election website, btw, which is how I started the conversation.

I found that odd, which is why I asked here. Anyway, so perhaps I need to mail them an official letter or something to receive this info?

I always seem to get in trouble at my precinct. I’m sure they draw straws when I show up.

Well, this isn’t a legal opinion, but I would agree that the people at the polling place are not responsible for providing you with that list. However, if you went in and asked if someone specifically were on the list to ensure that your vote for that person would count, then they ought to be able to confirm/deny it. Further, they truly ought to have been provided with a list of names of the official write-in candidates. Failure to do that is a potential legal problem for the BOE. Unfortunately, these things probably are considered a minor concern (and one would legitimately ask how many of the write-in votes are even being formally tabulated, or by what process/when - do we have ANY count on Stufflebeam yet, for example?) so not on the top of the priority list. The list is closed as of one week previous to the election. You need to call the Board of Elections after that time and request the list. It would also be wise for you to request (in the aftermath of this election) that the list be made available on the web site in future elections. If they fail to provide the list to you upon request, sue them for it! You’re entitled to that public information.

Thanks, Chicago. I’ll try to do that in a few weeks.

Well there is a list of write-in votes for Cook County at voterinfonet.com/sub/election_results.asp
just select write-in votes there. You can see just how many votes Randy got in Cook County. I’m not sure exactly how many mutations of his name they counted Stuffelbeam? Stuffelbaum? Shackelbeam? There’s a few dozen variations.

By the way, the rest of the list is pretty entertaining too. Yes, these votes (except for the few valid write-ins) don’t count but they had to list them in order to catch all the variations anyway. And it was nice to know that my write-in in the 3rd US CD made it all the way there.

I can’t find the write in totals. Could you please send Tony Peraica over to help me find them?

I couldn’t find them either. So now the Democratic machine is stealing vote totals off the internet too???

Well, I’ll be, they had them there yesterday. It was a downloadable pdf. Wonder what happened?
