What's so special about being human?

We are so lowly that I often think of ourselves as “meatbots.” And, what’s so great about the world we live in? Sure, it has an element of “good,” but basically it’s miserable and corrupt from “evil.” Looking at technology could make a person proud, but look more closely and you will see that it all comes from on High. (As great as I believe technology to be, why is it that nothing seems to work? With all the wit necessary to create these things, one would think that with just a little more effort they would work flawlessly!)

Humans are special because we are created in the image and likeness of God. We are given the grace necessary to acheive perfection as our Lord, Jesus Christ has called us to.

"So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them… And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good". Gen 1:27-31

Humans are special because we are created in the image and likeness of God. We are given the grace necessary to acheive perfection as our Lord, Jesus Christ has called us to.

Only our soul is formed in the image and likeness of God, and not our lowly bodies.

Also, note that the term “very good” in Gen 1:27-31 that you quoted refers to the evil inclination in Judaism. In Judaism, there’s a big qualitative difference between “good” and “very good.”

The “soul” Scripturally is the whole being, and not a ghost in the biological machine.

And the lowly body will one day be upgraded or converted to the “glorified body,” pneumatikon soma (1Co 15). Our human bodies are amazing, not for their strength of construction but because they do so much with so little. Yet, if we achieve so much with a body that is no more than a glorified animal, what can we even imagine about the body of a glorified human being???

Our LORD valued being human, because HE reclaimed his humanness from death. It is worthwhile being human , if for no other reason than to have a solid body that HE can embrace and hold!!!

We are God’s children! Did you see the butterflies, the dragonflies, and the lady bugs today? Did you notice the sunset last night? How about the sunrise this morning? How about when a baby laughs a great big belly laugh? Or when a preschooler makes a big discovery about the world? Wasn’t the rose blossom gorgeous? And the tomatoes! Those from the garden are THE best! Then did you hear the students singing? How about when a violin is played, or a piano played? Wonderful! Did you notice the soft green grass under your toes? How about the sand? And the trees! Don’t forget the mountains! How about the millions of teens singing God’s praises at WYD? And don’t forget the little 6th grade girl who is collecting 1 million books for kids who have no books! (Donate extras if you can!). What about all the fresh faced, excited kids at college, eager to learn and contribute? School started today for me, and the elementary students are EXCITED and eager!

Are you looking for the good, or focusing on the bad? If you look for the bad, you will see it. Likewise, if you look for the good, you will see it! Which do you think God wants us to focus on? I know for me, I will always look for the GOOD in people, in situations, and in life. It makes me happy!

The Lord has a loving relationship with everyone he has created.

Ps.139:13 reads “For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mothers womb.
14. I praise you because I am wonderfully
made.
your works are wonderful, I know them fullwell.
15. My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place.
when I was woven together in the dephs of the earth.
16. Your eyes saw my Unformed body.
All the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.”

God is with you when you awake and when you retire. He see’s everything you do and knows everything you think. And He loves you still

Nope. I am seeing the BEAUTY of all of God’s creation. God created the animals and flowers and trees and mountains and valleys and streams and lakes and oceans and fish and all the wonderful things in it! He created the fabulous children and the confusing adults and my loyal dog, cuddly cat, and entertaining guinea pigs. He created people with great intelligence to invent technology, discover medical cures and treatments, and be great leaders. He created people with challenges to teach others compassion, empathy, and patience. He created a great world! Do you see the beauty?

As hard as I sometimes try, it’s hard for me to extract pleasure from nature. OTOH, I often find myself on the verge of spiritual ecstasy. Given a choice between the two, I’ll take the spiritual ecstasy over nature.

Ok. I just enjoy LIFE! Life is so short and fleeting, so I choose to always try to see the GOOD and the BEAUTY in everything. The rest all falls into place. To me, enjoying God’s creation and appreciating the beauty is a form of prayer to God. No words are necessary.

I don’t deny what you say. I look at the Heavens everyday too. Can’t wait to get there. But my original question remains: What so special about these lowly bodies? (Other than they serve the means of gaining a glorified body.)

Why do you call them “lowly bodies”?

They are wondously complex examples of biology.
