What's with all the Protestant fundamentalist hatred for Catholics on YouTube?

If we’re right they’re wrong and they find that quite threatening, hence the overboard reaction.
But I think the converse is more important. They’re not afraid they’re wrong: they’re afraid (or infuriated) that we are.

Step into Protestant shoes. I think there are a few factors to consider.
(1) Catholicism seems weird and rules-laden, and probably even unloving.
(2) More importantly, it seems to sanction idol worship: even if a Protestant understands the difference between praying to saints and worshiping them, and the difference between dulia and latria, there’s still the Eucharist, who we actually DO worship. If you reject that Jesus is present there, this isn’t just wrong, it’s anti-Christian.
(3) Almost every theologically versed fundamentalist knows a “history” of the Catholic Church which includes (or perhaps, “consists of”) every abuse, real or imagined, committed in Her name. I was recently having a conversation with a friend of mine who was Pentecostal (and with no real dog in the Reformation fight, since the things she likes about her church could be practiced in Catholic charismatic services), and she had all sorts of ideas about the Crusades and the Inquisition which troubled her a lot. And she’s unusually charitable in disposition - a lot of other people, viewing this as a fight between Christianity and some strange Pagan hybrid, will believe every negative thing about their opponent.
(4) Most non-Catholics know lots of incorrect things about the Church. #1-3 can reasonably apply to even an educated, informed, non-believing Protestant. But most people don’t have this degree of knowledge. Boettner’s Roman Catholicism poisoned the waters with various lies and misstatements, and there’s been a lot of anti-Catholic folklore anyways.
(5) Lots of anti-Catholic prejudices are taught from a young age (depending on the speaker’s rearing). There are plenty of churches which spend far too much of their time assailing the “danger” of Roman Catholicism rather than edifying or evangelizing those present.
(6) We Catholics often make for bad representatives. Countless times on this forum, people overstate or misstate the Catholic position, or just act in an unloving or unchristian manner. And that’s here: Catholics as a group tend to be less committed to their faith than Catholics who spend lots of time on the web reading more about it.
(7) Some Protestants pick up works, like Ligouri’s, which end up confusing and repelling them more.

So I think there’s plenty of blame which can be spread around, I feel. While it is still obnoxious to have to deal with mis-educated anti-Catholics spouting off bigotry, I think it’s often a complicated picture. The speakers are often not evil, and can be reasoned with, or preached to.

Here’s a good example of the types of fundamentalists I’m talking about.

Look at this guy’s channel. People like him are the reason that some Catholics view Protestants as Mary-haters and the like. He has some extremely hateful anti-Catholic videos, and his responses to others’ comments are snide and inconsiderate to say the least. Some of his videos appear to be soley designed to stir up trouble, and to cause divisions within the body of Christ. People like him should be banned from the internet!
I haven’t watched random331’s videos, but I know the kind of thing your talking about.

I even wonder if such people are really Evangelicals, or if they just claim to be Evangelical in order to try and make Evangelicals look bad. (I don’t know if you saw it, but we had a discussion about the phony “Landover Baptist” website a couple months ago.)

Conversely, I also think it’s possible that some people on the internet who call themselves Catholics are secretly trying to give Catholics a black-eye.

It’s funny how a particular behavior can be regarded as repulsive going one way, but back the other way an entirely different standard is applied. Damning anyone who rejects the Catholic church is “exposing someone to the truth”, damning anyone who accepts the Catholic church is “grossly offensive”.
i have been on these forums for years… and i have NEVER heard a Catholic say that Protestants are “hell-bound”, or that they are unsaved…

I have no idea what you are talking about…

However, i HAVE heard Protestants say waht OP refers to…

so don’t try to act like all this “bashing” is “equal”… its NOT.

I’ve found few Catholics stating it directly here, but I’ve run into a fair number who don’t really believe that Protestants get to Heaven except in the sense of “well ultimately it’s in God’s hands”. That is, saying that they can be called Christians based on their Baptism, but that since they don’t have the Real Presence, confession, members in the One True Church (those are the main ones I’ve run across, but there are others), that they probably don’t have salvation, though maybe if they’re lucky God will have mercy on them anyway.

That’s not everyone, but I much prefer the people who tell me “you’re probably going to hell” to those that would say “you’re a Christian” yet believe that my eternal fate is dubious at best.

i haven’t even heard THAT… i have heard absolutely NO Catholic say or imply that Protestants aren’t going to make it. to me, to say this is the height of arrogance… It is making onself God, who alone is our judge… (Jesus Christ)…

again, i have never heard anything remotely like this… Catholics are FAR more tolerant of Protestnats… and more open-minded, etc… than vice versa… which is one reason i would be Catholic if for no other reason… If i didn’t know much about either faith community, i would choose the Catholic one for that reason alone… they just seem to be more truly Christian, generally speaking, in their actions…

Well, I can certainly believe that you personally haven’t run into or noticed people with that belief. Likewise I personally haven’t had any personal interaction with a Protestant that went around saying Catholics are going to hell. You’re far more likely to notice people disagreeing with your beliefs than people uncharitably disagreeing with beliefs that you don’t hold. My perspective on the openness and willingness of each side to embrace the other is quite different. Declaring that someone is your brother is one thing, inviting them to your table is quite another 😉

well, give it time… 😃

no, actually, i notice both… and i would definitely remembert something like that…

frankly, i have post traumatic stress disorder… and it was caused by two different events in my life… BOTH of which involved non-Catholics…

I have had numeorus problems with Catholics… but i can honestly say that none of those problems caused my ptsd or made it significantly worse…

Let me began by answering with common sense, the topic question.

Pope Benedict and the late Great Pope John Paul II, both have made similar and signififant statements on the reality of TRUTH. They have done so because of the world wide acceptance of the “doctrine of relativity… it ain’t wrong unless I say that it’s wrong” so widely accepted these day’s.

Both articulate that there cannot (an impossibility) be more than one truth on any isingle issue.

This being both fact and THE truth, it seems quite reasonable that if another "Christian- “love thy neighbor as thyself” denominations, must not only deny our Catholic Truth, but must make our claim to “the truth” to seem to be rediculious. Should they fail in there attempt (and they do fail regullarly) they would have to admit that indeed that Catholic Church is the very seat of TRUTH for matters of Faith and Morals.

Why? Read, “word by word” not by verse by verse, Mt. 16:13-19. Why;** because Jesus who is God say’s so**.:o Obvioisly, this reading, like John Chapter six, have many, many who claim that the “bible is the inspired word of God,” read GOD"S WORD’s and then pretend that “words don’t mean something specific” and invent and justify some other meaning, than the very obvious meaning of the truth, to suit their will.

This is futher complicated by Jesus Himself telling us that “The Father enlighten’s whom ever He Will’s.” So in Christian charity, we may not assume, obstinant behavior, because it may be God’s mysterious will, that their minds are darkened and they are unable to see the truth of there ways. “My way’s are not your way’s and My mind, is not like your mind.” Amen:thumbsup:

New’s flash!

God dosen’t decide who goes to Heaven! No, you and I do. That is why God gives us an intellect anf free-will… to “19 I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse; therefore choose life, that you and your descendants may live, 20 loving the LORD your God, obeying his voice, and cleaving to him; for that means life to you and length of days, that you may dwell in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.” Deutt. 30: 19-20

Reply and necessary clairifaction:

It is through the merits of the Pascal Mystery of Jesus Christ that anyone and everyone has the **opportunity to “get to Heaven.”:**thumbsup:

Jesus Life, Death and Ressurection OPENED the gates of Heaven, but did not, I repeat did not guarentee that anyone or everyone would indeed, accomplish the goal of our birth, and the Will of God. Which of course id to “get to Heaven.”

God’s continued blessings,
