Perhaps meltzerboy has already posted a thread on this, but I haven’t seen it…

On this Memorial Day (in the U.S.), let’s talk about our favorite war flicks!

Mine is Patton. Love the movie; love the character.

Glory is a great great movie. I also like saving private Ryan, and though it’s not a theatrical movie- I do like band of brothers.
 
Great movies already mentioned, except for* Patton*. (Sorry, svid2, I think, Patton was a bit looney, why else would he be nicknamed—Old Blood and Guts?)

I’d like to add: The Longest Day
 
I agree about Patton, but I also like behind-the-scenes war films. Two outstanding movies of that kind that have been on cable recently are Ike: Countdown to D-Day, with Tom Selleck, and *Into the Storm, *with Brendan Gleeson as Churchill and Iain Glen as King George VI.

The Longest Day, The Bridge Over thr River Kwai, The Great Escape, Von Ryan’s Express, The Battle of the Bulge. To name a few. The Guns of Navarrone and TORA! TORA! TORA!
 
Top of the list: #1. The Best Years of Our Lives (with its honorary Oscar to a real vet)
2. Sam Fuller’s The Steel Helmet (was just on TV earlier)
3. The Battle of Algiers - staged and scripted, but yikes, it all looks so real :eek:

There is room for religious movies that are also war movies, I really like "Maximilian, St. of Auschwitz’ , “Assisi Underground” is suppose to be good.

“Gladiator” though like “Braveheart” are not more current war movies.

I haven’t seen this Battle of Algiers but it sounds good, that war sounds much like it was France’s Vietnam and many people on both sides died.

I’m going to seek out The Steel Helmet, since you place it in the same league. Plus, it’s one of the few Sam Fuller pictures I haven’t seen. By the way, you should check out Shock Corridor, if you haven’t seen it. It’s not a war film, though.

Valkryie is one I forgot! Excellent movie.
