I think I have two, although they are probably not war films per se`, but take place during World War II.
One is, “Two Women”. It’s about a widow and her daughter fleeing the bombings in Rome, and going to stay in the country side. It is heart breaking.
The other is “Life is Beautiful”.
Sophia Loren starred in “Two Women”, and Roberto Benigni starred in “Life is Beautiful” and they both won the Oscar for their performances.
Both my parents lived in Italy during World War 2. My dad was a young boy, and had to stop attending school because it was too dangerous for the teachers to travel to his village.
I remember stories he would tell of Fascists arriving at the farm and helping themselves to livestock and other products with the phrase, “Serve per la patria” (It is needed for the fatherland)
He remembered having to evacuate his village and stay in caves in the mountains when their town was occupied by the Germans. He remembered the Americans arriving in town and that they needed to demolish some houses, because the tanks and trucks could not fit in the road. He remembers the American soldiers tossing candies and cigarettes to the towns people. (there is a similar scene in “Two Women”.)
He also told stories of the “Marocchinate” that happened in the area, that was also featured in the film “Two Women” It tends to be an obscured part of history.
I’ve never even heard of that film, but now I’m definitely going to seek it out!
