Staying with @christofirst’s musical theme 😉 , the flowers you can’t beat , the wildflowers .

Laurel on this Feast of the Triumph of the Cross because the laurel represents victory or triumph and because of the ancient practice of crowning the victor in a contest with a wreath of laurel. Because its leaves never wilt, it can may also symbolize eternity.

Mountain laurel

Here’s one that caught my eye yesterday. Again, I’m not sure of the type, but it has a tropical look.

Thanks! One of my neighbors used to sell Plumeria plants from their backyard a few times a year. I saw their for-sale sign but never inquired about the plants. Now I know what they look like.

They are lovely when the whole tree is covered in flowers, though they do tend to shed all their leaves, which can be a lot and a nuisance to rake up. They also take a while to decompose in the compost heap. How do I know? My mother grew two! They were just the plain white with the yellow centres, but my were they pretty. You have to be careful of the white sap, it is very sticky, and iirc it does stain clothing.

The violet is a symbol of humility (thus the phrase “shrinking violet”). By extension, it refers to the Incarnation of Christ.

A neighbor gifted me with a branch that broke off his tree.

I stuck that branch into the ground, it rooted, and grew into a tree.

Do you have the fragrant violets?

I think they’re called Parma violets or Persian violets.

I’m not sure.

Here it is, the scented violets

In the US, the extract of these flowers are used to flavor marshmallows…

As for Parma violet sweets, my grandmother would give some to me when I was a child.

I have just come across this photo of Llanrwst in Wales as Autumn sets in on the banks of the river Conwy

Thistles represent the curse of sin, particularly the Fall. They may also be used in depictions of Christ’s Passion.

But insects seem to be oblivious of that .

Thistles remind me of Scotland.

Isn’t it a symbol of Scotland just like the shamrock for Ireland?

Its funny seeing the horses carefully nip the scotchthistle flowers off and eat them 😃 ,they must taste OK 🙂

People eat thistles too.

The artichoke and the cardoon, a wild variety of artichoke, are members of the thistle family.
