Did you know that we dont have the right to “protest”? Here is article 1 of the bill of rights,
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

I disagree. When the people peacefully assemble to petition the Government for a redress of grievances that is actually a form of protesting of that which the government has done. So tell me, was it or was it not okay when some colonists threw British tea into Boston harbor as a protest against the added tax on tea?
 
It was quite controversial among the Patriots. Benjamin Franklin offered to pay for the tea.
