We all know that identical twins occur when a single egg is fertilized to form one zygote which then divides into two separate bodies.
But how and when do identical twins receive their spiritual soul?
The following alternatives seem possible:
A1. The zygote receives no spiritual soul at the time of conception (i.e. fertilization). Both identical twins receive their spiritual soul after the zygote has divided into two separate bodies.
A2. The zygote receives one spiritual soul at the time of conception (i.e. fertilization). When the zygote divides into two separate bodies, an additional spiritual soul is given to one of the two bodies. The other one keeps the spiritual soul that has been received at the time of conception.
A3. The zygote receives one spiritual soul at the time of conception (i.e. fertilization). When the zygote divides into two separate bodies, the spiritual soul also divides.
A4. The zygote receives two spiritual souls at the time of conception (i.e. fertilization)… When the zygote divides, one spiritual soul is distributed to each body.
Now, let’s discuss these alternatives:
A1 is not possible, because according to catholic teaching, the spiritual soul of each human being is created by God himself immediately at the time of conception (i.e. fertilization).
A2 is not possible, because according to catholic teaching, the spiritual soul of each human being is created by God himself immediately at the time of conception (i.e. fertilization). In this alternative however, one identical twin receives its spiritual soul at a later point of time.
A3 is not possible, because according to catholic teaching, the spiritual soul of each human being is created by God himself immediately at the time of conception (i.e. fertilization). In this alternative however, the spiritual either divides or is divided by God at a later point in time. In the first case, an additional spiritual soul occurs without God’s involvement, and in the second case, God creates an additional spiritual soul after the time of conception.
A4 implies that there is one body (zygote) with two spiritual souls. According to catholic teaching, a human being is a union of one body and one spiritual soul. Strictly speaking, the zygote would not be a human being in this case.
So the question is: How does catholic teaching explain the existence of identical twins?
