When will the insanity end?

No need as you have yet to offer a valid reason that God wants confusion in Christianity.
Yep, I agree; confusion, mob-rule and religions, which arose and came from man’s own intellect and ego and not from God. This “confusion” has been the cause of much division and a belief in many myths and false teachings…

I can accept the argument if it yeilded some other fruit. For example, a person read the gospel and felt that it called us to a life exclusively of service to the poor and he then built a denomination based on that. At least I can see a benifit of that division. I cannot see how a division based on age of baptism or on music in the service is something pleasing to God.

Hello ralphinal,

There is some truth to what to have written.

Everything that is true or good in any person or denomination, represents truth and goodness because all truth and goodness originate from God. God is Truth and the truth never changes, it will always remain the truth.

Even bad people do good things from time to time, am I right?

And good people, sometimes do bad things…right?

Thank you for your post…🙂

You are correct, as you have been known to be before, it is not that new.

Does it not lead to ask why have a little when you can have it all?

Is there anything we Catholics would be willing to give up to foster Christian unity? Would we be willing to give up the rule of celibacy for example? Would we be willing to open up communion to non-Catholics? How about birth control? Or maybe we could say it is not necessary to believe in the perpetual virginity of Mary?

I’m not suggesting these things are wrong. I’m just saying it might be hard for a lot of Protestants to swallow a lot of Catholic doctrine they would be required to accept. There doesn’t seem to be much room for compromise.
That’s because that isn’t what their Church teaches or taught them. They most likely were taught against these beliefs in order to foster anti-Catholocsim. I attended Protestant Churches when I was younger and I have heard it all. They are just plain wrong. If you have been taught heresy and non-truthsto lie to justify your Church’s/denominations change(s), that won’t ever make what you have been taught true.

Because God has never intended that we be His automatons. He is quite capable and willing to work with us individually; right where we are and how we are.
Unbelievable!!! How many more excuses can non-C’s come up with. With answers like that, no wonder they can’t be open to seeing/learning the Truth as taught by the Catholic Church for 2,000 years. Jesus left his Deposit of Faith with His Church - the Early Church - The Catholic Church. Despite the 500 years of all non-C’s beliefs and attempts to diminish/contradict the Catholic Church because of negative history, not admitting that it was man/human will/choices not the Church, we have continued to stand teaching the very same Deposit of Faith as given to us by Jesus. We have NEVER changed a thing. No matter how many times you say it, or how many different ways you say it, the Catholic Church still teaches the same One Truth. NO OTHER Church founded by man can say that. Protestant Churches have changed their beliefs/traditions so much over the last 500 years, that Luther wouldn’t even recognize it anymore. Believe anything you want, but the fact remains that the Catholic Church was founded by Jesus Christ with Peter and the Apostles. EVERY SINGLE OTHER CHURCH was founded by man. MAN!!!

When will the insanity end? When will all the infighting stop? When will there be true Christian unity…unity in beliefs?

Because of the flawed doctrine of “personal interpretation”, today, there are approximately 40,000 different, Protestant, non-Catholic Christian denominations, divisions and subdivisions, each and everyone one of them, with a little different “spin” on Christianity.

I would like to hear a Protestant explain the logic or biblical bases for these divisions and sub-divisions of Christianity.

Personal interpretation has led to “mob rule” and chaos and it has weakened Christianity. It is the old, “divide and conquer” principle and we are dividing and conquering ourselves.

Imagine how much greater Christianity would be and all the great things that we could accomplish, working together as one faith, which was truly united…

The insanity needs to stop….Where living in a world today, where anyone who has a Bible can become a “minister” and start his or her own (Protestant) Christian denomination. People now can pay a small free and become “ordained ministers”, over the internet. Many people today are having non-denominational ministers perform their marriage ceremonies. What is a “non-denominational ministers” anyways…this does not even make any sense.

Some ministers make a living, just marring people. They have drive-through marriage chapels and Elvis impersonators who perform marriages in Las Vegas. There are ministers on TV who claim to heal people and ask for your money. Some ministers and preachers today wear Rolex watches, drive expensive cars and live in multi-million dollar mansions, all paid for with the monies that were given to them, with the intention that it would go to help the needy.

There is even a “drunken minister” on the Jerry Springer show.

All these so-called “Ministers of God” belong to some Protestant denomination. People today have made a mockery of Christianity and a mockery of Holy Sacraments, like marriage. The main cause of all this nonsense can be blamed on “personal interpretation” of the Bible.

I know that there are some good and decent ministers and decent denominations out there but with personal interpretation, even a “normal ministers” could error and join the ranks of all the other crazy’s.

Why don’t the “squared away” denominations, reign in the nut cases? They don’t, because they can’t…They can’t, because they too believe in the flawed doctrine of “personal interpretation” or, “to each his own”…right?.

I am sure that there exist some Protestants out their who are just as offended as I am with the breakdown of Christianity…What are your thoughts and how is anybody going to correct these problems, without central leadership, oversight and a chain of command?

I pray for true Christian Unity….

Peace

Jimmy B.
I would like to hear the “official” non-Catholic, Protestant and/or “former Catholic” response to this, if there is one, my guess is that there are many different Protestant “twists” on this subject.

I agree. I would love to see unity between all of Christianity. I am a non-Catholic who prays for unity everyday.

In all seriousness this thread is hysterical. The insanity could start to end by stopping of this posting of dozens of threads directed at “showing” Protestants they are second class Christians. There is nothing more divisive that this continual claim of Roman Catholic supremacy. We can have our opinions, and I would certainly claim that the evidence suggests that what is today the Roman Catholic church is the first viable consolidation of all the various localized churches that grew up from the apostles. But in truth, I don’t believe that there was any such thing as a Catholic Church from day one. This arose much later.

I respect the argument that some Protestants make that so called “heretical” sects which were beaten down could also claim to be on equal footing. However, for the most part I don’t think they exist today, so question is moot it seems to me. The Catholic Church of today is that one that was left standing after all the various infighting.

I have difficulty with seeing that Luther returned the Church to some original place by his Lutheranism. So I do see from Luther on down a rather serious re-ordering of theology. But that does not mean it is necessarily wrong. I disagree with it, in many respects but not in all. I believe Protestant theology has made important contributions to our total understanding.

I’m disturbed with this all or nothing kind of discourse. Ecumenism is a valuable and necessary evolvement in the world if we are to survive. We do no one, and certainly not each other any service by digging in our heels in some fundamentalist orientation. We become but another reactionary fundamental sect much like radical Islam, Protestant fundamentalism or rradical Judaism. This promotes a war. Religion should be about seeking common sense and compassion, understanding and peaceful solution to our differences.

I don’t frankly understand all this chest beating.

I agree. It saddens me. I mean, I am glad the Jimmy B. is proud of his faith, but it seems there must be a more effective manner to express it. :crying:
We can have our opinions, and I would certainly claim that the evidence suggests that what is today the Roman Catholic church is the first viable consolidation of all the various localized churches that grew up from the apostles.
I think this is not the case, and this is part of the problem. The Latin Rite became the largest over the centuries due to political and economic situations, but in the beginning, the majority of the localized churches belonged to what is now called Eastern Rite or Orthodox. None of them are Latin or “Roman” in culture, language or practice. Yet, they are all considered today by the
Roman Rite to be “viable consolidations”.
But in truth, I don’t believe that there was any such thing as a Catholic Church from day one. This arose much later.
I am curious about this. Perhaps we could explore this more? If you don’t want to do it on this insanity thread, we could go to another? I am wondering why the NT describes the faith as Catholic, and the early fathers used this term, if there was “no such thing”. I am also curious about when and how “later” it developed. I do agree with this as far as the Roman Rite, which became very powerful policically when the Imperial political power moved to the East in about the sixth century.
I respect the argument that some Protestants make that so called “heretical” sects which were beaten down could also claim to be on equal footing. How do you see that heresies were 'beaten down?"
I believe Protestant theology has made important contributions to our total understanding.
This is certainly true for me personally. I understood my faith much better after 3 years in a Protestant Seminary. I have also learned even more since joining CAF. Discussions with my learned Protestant brethren have honed me quite a bit!

I don’t understand or appreciate the chest beating either.

CAF is not a venue for Ecumenism though. I supprt the work of focusing on that which we share, but here on CAF, I focus mainly on that which we dont.

SpiritMeadow,

I can understand where you can come to that feeling that these types of discussions get rediculous. As these discussions go on, it becomes very difficult for Catholics to continue to have discussion at all in the face of closemindedness, sole belief of non-C’s in what their Church teaches and has taught them. When you have spent a lifetime learning what you believe, and against Catholic teachings, it would have to be virtually impossible to buy into/believe/be open to Catholic teaching/interpretation.

That said, the Catholic Church is the Early Church. That is historically proven. The Catholic Church still believes and teaches today what every single Early Church Father believed and taught. Every single member of a non-C Church today HAS to believe that the Catholic Church was not the Early Church. They have to believe that we apostocized, fell away, was not the Church that Christ founded, doesn’t know the Truth, never knew the Truth, Peter wasn’t given authority or the keys to the Kingdom, the authority died when Peter or the last apostle died, etc… All of these beliefs have to be true to justify every single non-C Churches founding and existence and to justify their teaching that the Catholic Church doesn’t have authority.

We are not trying to “show Protestants that they are second class Christians.” We are defending our faith against heresy. Every single non-C denomination/Church was founded on man, the idology/beliefs of man. Christ founded a Church in his lifetime, not over 1,500 - 1,900 years later. He founded One Church and taught One Truth. He left his Deposit of Faith with His Church - the Early Church that became the Catholic Church. There are writings in 107AD that used the word Catholic. By the use of the word then, it was obvious that it was well understood and had been in use for a long time. The reason the Early Church had to give herself a name it to distinguish herself from the heresy/sects that were being established at that time. So, the “Catholic Church came much later” belief just makes it easier to discount the Catholic Church and not believe in it’s authority. The Catholic Church is still the Church left standing teaching the same One Truth after all of the infighting. There was no other Church, period, that could EVER make the claim that they were even there or that could ever make the claim that they were the Church that Christ established. He did establish a Church, on a “rock” - Peter, and gave her the ability to bind and loose, gave her the keys to the Kingdom, promised that the gates of hell would never prevail against her because he would be with her to guide and protect her until the end of time. The Church did not make that up. Those were words from Jesus’ mouth! He said those words, and we believe him. Any other explaination, understanding or opinion is from man and from man’s individual/self interpretation of what he wants/thinks Scripture to mean.

Non-C Churches don’t study or teach the history of the Catholic Church because they teach their own ideology and doctrine. The Catholic Church has recorded it’s history all the way back to the apostles. It is there for every individual to read if they want to. They don’t because they believe the individual interpretations and teachings/beliefs of their Church and it’s leaders. Individual interpretation is condemned in the Bible, but yet that is the practice of non-C churches. Why is that? Now, some non-C churches are discussing the need for an “authority” as to stay true to it’s teachings. There has ALWAYS been an authority - the Catholic Church. We have always known, interpreted, taught and protected the Truth. Jesus gave His Church His Authority to teach his Truth and promised to always guide and protect His Church until the end of time. He either did or did not keep his promise. We believe that he kept his promise because he is God. Would God lie? Is it foreshadowed or recorded in Scripture that God would change his mind?

Nothing is more divisive that the hundreds/thousands of denonimations out there that think that they are the correct interpreters of Scripture and that are the Church founded by Christ. With the millions of interpretations of what the Scriptures really mean, comes the divisiveness. Opinions/individual interpretations are just that, opinions/personal interpretation/understanding on one’s own power. Jesus didn’t give ANYONE that power/authority except the apostles and their successors when he breathed on them and told them to go forth and teach. There can only be One Truth, One Church, and it is the Truth and Church that was passed on from Peter and the Apostles through their successors through every generation. Eroneous acts by fallible men in the middle ages did not constitute a Reformation. These actions were being eradicated and reform was being made before Trent and corrected before the actual Reformation. Luther was too full of himself, his ideology and his political influence to turn back.

You are right, Luther didn’t return the Church to some original place. He did seriously re-invent and twist theology and teachings to reflect what he wanted his church to teach and what he wanted his believers to believe. It most certainly IS WRONG! How could it not be? He wasn’t Jesus. He wasn’t Peter. He wasn’t given any power or authority by Jesus. He originally didn’t want to break away from Catholocism, but only to bring some reform in regards to the sale of indulgences most importantly. He didn’t have a problem with Catholic teachings, Catholic interpretation, Catholic doctrine and dogma. It was only after he became full of himself and gained political influence that he became his own pope and figured he knew better than the Church that had received the Deposit of Faith from Jesus himself, carried forth and safeguarded those teachings with the protection of the Holy Spirit, determined the canon of the Bible and penned the Bible, and had continued to teach the same teachings and interpretations that it had always taught for 1,500 years to break away from Catholocism to found his own Church. That is wrong. Man was never given the authority to go around founding their own churches because they don’t like something that the Church teaches. That is exactly what happened with Luther and has happened in the founding of every single Church since the Reformation. They have had to create stories like “Jesus took the Church away from earth only to return it to a righteous man” types of beliefs. Protestant theology is not what Jesus created. Protestant theology is changed, re-defined, personally interpreted understanding of Scripture. It is wrong. Scripture tells us it is wrong and not to do it! The best thing that Protestatism has done has been to seperate off of Christ’s One, Church on it’s own ideology and splinter into hundreds/thousands of different denominations that continue to re-define Scripture and doctrine.

I am sorry if this is hard-line. I am also not being rude. I am defending the Catholic faith against the opinions and personal beliefs of non-C’s and from the eroneous teachings of non-C Churches in regards to the Catholic Church and her teachings. No one today could possibly know better than the ECF’s and Christians from the time of the death of Jesus and forward. No man in the 1500’s or the 1,800’s had the knowledge that the ECF’s and Christians had in the first century or had any authority to teach anything different than what the Catholic Church-Christ’s Church had taught for 1500-1800 years before them.

So these discussions get rediculous over time because Catholics are continually asked to “prove” why we believe what we believe by Christians who took our Bible, altered it, self interpreted it to mean what they think it means or want it to mean, then ask us to prove our beliefs against theirs. That is what is rediculous.

You know, I have read so many of the posts that are started like this and I have to say that I can’t really figure out what is trying to be accomplished. I have seen in various threads, just in the last month alone, claims that there are 2,000, 3,000, 33,000, and 40,000 different denominations. Well, which is it?

Also, has anyone ever stopped to think that people come here to honestly see what real-life Catholics think? As a “Protestant” (what does that even really mean in 2008 A.D. anyway?) seeking to find out what Catholicism is all about, I am shocked at the lack of love and compassion for non-Catholics when I see threads like this. I guess I see The Great Commission as a way to LOVINGLY show people the ways of Christianity.

To the OP: no “Protestant” that I have ever come in contact with takes internet certification, the miracle workers that heal you on TV, the prosperity gospel, or any other group that goes off the deep end and strays from orthodox teaching seriously. Actually, most of the people I know are surprisingly in line with the CC in theology (obviously not all the way, but you’d be surprised at how much all these “non-denominational, Bible-only” churches that are truly following the Bible are in line with CC teaching.)

Bigotry can be found everywhere. Too bad it is perpetuated by Catholics on a Catholic Board. 😊

Amen to that. Defending your faith is certainly in order. But not sure how bigotry fits into that.

Well said, SpiritMeadow…well said. 👍

I am really surprised that three of the last four posts stated bigotry. I assume then that the three that agreed there was bigotry, think I was being a bigot? Three of you think it, so something must be there. What exactly came across as bigotry? I don’t think that there is one thing that I wrote in my previous post that is not true. I have either heard or read every single thing that I wrote there from some well-meaning, some not, but mis-informed Protestants in regards to the Catholic Church. I didn’t mean disrespect. I am also not narrow minded on this subject. I am just weary of all of the untruths, mis-information that keeps getting spread around. I tried to respond to a post that called all of this “hysterical” That post was nice in a lot of ways, but how easy to say this is basically rediculous and then proceed to state that the Catholics on this board are trying to show Protestants as second class citizens, prove our supremacy, and that the Catholic Church didn’t exist from day one, that the re-ordering of theology by Luther wasn’t necessarily wrong. I admit, it was strongly stated, but I don’t see bigotry. So, please explain where you see that. I give my apologies for going overboard.

I notice a lot of Catholic Arrogance…

Maybe, just maybe the Roman Catholic Church doesn’t have all of the answers?

Lots of things within the Church don’t make much sense to me…

Priests could marry, now priests can’t marry…which is it?

A bigot is Intolerance toward those of different creeds or religious affiliations.

That’s probably why they labeled you.

A bigot is Intolerance toward those of different creeds or religious affiliations.

That’s probably why they labeled you.
I know the meaning of the word. I was writing that post because it is unfair and frustrating to hear all the negativity, untruths and opinions as facts by non-C’s and to state the truth in response to mis-information, untruths and eroneous “facts.” My showing annoyance towards that, doesn’t mean that I am intollerant! Stating the truth against what has been wrongly espoused is not intollerance!!! I have many friends of different creeds and religious affiliations, and am and have always been very accepting and understanding of them and have shown them love despite our differences. So, if you could please read the post as coming from someone who is irritated with all of the negativity and untruths and see that I was addressing those, instead of from someone who is a bigot, you might be able to be a little more understanding. I don’t believe that my post showed intollerance towards different creeds or affiliations, only aversion towards the mindset against Catholics and opinions and individual interpretation as facts. I think my being called a bigot is completely unfair. As I already tried to explain my reason behind the post, understanding of the explanation or being given the benefit of the doubt, would be nice.
