Where do you sit in church, and why?

(Boy, with all these responses, I can’t beleive no one has said this yet…)

Anyplace I can get a seat! :tiphat:

Depends, when my wife cantors we sit near the choir.

When we are in the pews together (rare, since my daughters are both altarservers and my wife is a choir member) we find a place midway bewteen where the girls are up on the altar and where the choir sits, makes it easier to connect at the time of the Kiss of Peace.

When for whatever reason I attend without my wife (it happens now and then), I sit way in the back (last five rows).

The reason? After fighting for them for years, our far-left-of-center parish finally installed kneelers, but only in the last 5 rows of 1 side of the aisle. Talk about begrudgingly…

I’m a cantor/choir member for the mass I go to, so I stand where the cantor stands or I sit where the choir sits (due left of the altar, when looking from the congregations point of view). Occasionally, when we don’t want to use the piano, the ensemble I’m with stands right in front of the far left pews, as opposed to back in the choir loft. We have found that this position makes us sound MUCH better and is much more inviting to the congregation to sing.

With me, depends on the situation:

Sunday Mass with my family, right side toward the front so my daughter (age three) has half a chance of paying attention to what is going on.

School Mass, right side, back row (it’s near the stack of board books she can look at). The front two-thirds of the church are reserved for school kids.

Other weekday Mass, right side for no particular reason but off in the rear section. I am friends with many who go to the weekday Mass but it bugs me when at the Lord’s prayer they actually join hands and form a circle in the main aisle to say it. This way, I am too far away to join in. (And my daughter is less distracted too.)

Well when the choir I am in have to sing (we have 3 choirs) I will sit there. Else on the left side of the aisle and the beginning of the pew. 4 rows from up front lol.

Why geesh maybe cause I am lefthanded? :rotfl:

I have discovered that if I come in right as Mass is beginning, I can escape participating in the “As a sign of our unity, please share your name and a greeting with those around you!” that our church usually does. And since the church is pretty noisy before Mass starts, it’s not like I’m missing out on meditative quiet time. So I try to do some reflection before I leave for Mass.

Since I come in right as Mass is beginning, I have to grab whatever seat I can find. But I find that’s an acceptable trade-off. And since maybe 20% of the people arrive during the first 5-10 minutes of Mass, it’s usually not bad trying to find something!

We are creatures of habit. I always sit about 6 rows from the back.

I sit in the front and sadly not for the reason of being closer to God but rather to get further from immodest women. As long as scantily dressed women are behind me, God will literally be my focus.

We never sit in the same spot that I can think of. However when I am an Eucharistic Minister I do sit toward the front but just for the ease of getting to the altar.

I try to sit in the first couple rows, left side. As my Baptist friend says, “Ain’t nothing going to get between me and the Word!!” 😃 Plus, if I sit on the left side I receive Eucharist from the priest.

We usually sit 2 pews from the front. I notice that when we sit back farther, I get distracted easier. I start noticing how pretty that little girl is or how cute and funny that toddler is or what pretty hair she has or look how crooked her pony tails are, and on and on and on. I have to keep slapping myself to pay attention!

“We must have a lot of very humble people here” I once heard a priest say (in a homily on not taking the highest seat at a banquet). 🙂

You just reminded me of something I heard when I was in High School.

People want the front of the bus the back of church and the middle of the road smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/4/4_1_4.gif

I sit 3rd row back, inside isle seat. That way I can see ALL that takes place during the Mass with no heads in my way.

i sit on the front pew so as not to disturb the children brought to church to learn how to fuss and fight while in church… 👍

We have a breaking point that cuts the church in Half into 4 sections (left front right front left back right back). I usually sit in the first pew of the right front. I like it there because its right in front of the gifts and the baptism. I also sit at the aisle so im directly facing the alter. My priest distrubtes the eucharist from to this side too.

I wear multiple hats in my small parish. When I lector I sit in the seat reserved for that office. When I am just sacristan (not lectoring) I sit on the side near the presidential chair so I can help the priest should anything come up… battery in his microphone dies etc.

😛

I sit no more than ten rows back from the front and to the right of the aisle. I can hear and see better that way; plus I don’t like looking at tall people’s backs 🙂 Plus it helps my toddler so he’s not distracted by people either.

In order to avoid distractions my family regularly sits in the front pew. We arrive 1/2 hr before mass on Sundays. During weekday mass I also sit up front although I am usually by myself. My children would prefer not sitting up front but it is not their decision to make.

Right side, on the center aisle, about 4-8 rows from the front.

Near the front for more time after Communion, but why on the right? I have no idea. :hmmm:
