Where I struggle with abortion

I used to struggle with that, but it was because I wasn’t as close to the Catholic church and had not read enough. For many who are just getting into it, curious or just haven’t read enough…it seems like a no brainer: unwanted pregnancy ='s abortion, we have modern science and medicine…why not? Especially in the case of trauma or abuse and etc. right? No, I was wrong.

You have to understand that the abortion process can be just about as painful as the rape. The abortionist sucks this life as it is forming from the uterus, through the mother’s legs. That is no easy task, they are pulling and sucking out a forming baby, the placenta and the hormones that are already being released to grow the baby need to also stop. If it’s a pill form, then a 2nd pill may be given so the mother’s uterus can be emptied and sometimes they have to do a procedure for the dilation of her certvix to make it open to abort the baby. These are just quick example and generalizations of what goes on during different types of abortions. This adds to the trauma and depression of the rape.

Personally, as a woman who has had trauma in her life, abortion is out of the question for me. The best way to fight the evil that happened in the case of rape or abuse is to have that baby and allow life to happen. When Christ was abused and beaten and then unjustly nailed to a cross He saved us. And what did our Church do? The cross became a symbol of salvation and hope rather than a symbol of death and torture.

Right… but still, not a direct abortion and that’s where I’m sure I muddled things up. Even in the case of the diseased uterus, I don’t think that would be called “abortion” would it? It’s not what lawmakers are talking about to save the life of the mother…right? They’re talking about what @AlruwhAlquds details…the intentional destruction/direct abortion of a human life to which there is no justification under church teaching.

Exactly. Never direct abortion, ever. This is why I am the crazy “no loopholes in the legislation” lady.

Nothing you say changes the fact that everyone has a right to life, from conception until natural death.

I’ll ask what I asked earlier… what medical conditions would require a direct abortion and not a cesarean to save the life of the mother?
Death of the mother is mainly a hypothetical discussion here, but yes there are cases. One that comes to mind is eclampsia which the mother of one of my godsons has. Her first pregnancy caused severe seizures it nearly killed her and killed her baby. Her second, my godson, again severely threatened the health of his mother and her son suffered strokes which resulted in some palsy. Yes, she survived both, but hope you can see these could have gone south fast.

No, I’ve never said that any human life should be worth more than another. However, and this is my point, all of us are affected by the sin of not practicing this.

Yes me too, militantly so. Obviously I need to work on my charity and delivery. This issue is so deeply ingrained in my heart as a mother and as a woman. I can’t stand justification of it in any way.

As a follower of Christ, if I ever found myself in a situation where my life was threatened I hope and pray with my whole heart that I would be willing to die to save the life of the child. I think that’s the point. To take up my cross and do what is right. Csection at viability. A pregnancy isn’t a long period of time. I can’t think of a reason why a direct abortion would ever make sense.

I was deeply troubled when a friend of mine - a practicing RC - informed me that she had an abortion in her mid 20’s because she didn’t believe that her and her fiancé (later husband) had the economic means to care for the child. She is unrepentant and believes she is entitled to that choice. She is also involved in Christian adult formation in at least 3 RC churches. She maintains that a Catholic can be pro-choice and that she is working from within to change the church. She goes to church almost daily and prays the rosary 3 times a day. It makes me sick!!!

Adoption is allowed. That’s always a choice for the mother.

The thing about your posts that troubles me is you seem to be saying you would encourage the mother to give the child up for adoption because YOU would have a problem accepting the child and having the child around.

I come from a big family so I understand how protective and how deeply people can feel when their family members were wronged. But there is a point where you have to accept the wrong happened to them, not you. So no, I don’t believe the feelings of the family rate over the good of the child. It really comes down to the issue if the mother can put aside the violent act and still act as a mother to the child or not.

I am not trying to be unkind. Part of what influences my advice is watching several young girls get railroaded by their families to make decisions they were not fully behind concerning their children.

While those families largely had the best of intentions the truth is they wanted the “problem” to go away and everything go back to “normal”. But for the pregnant girls there was no going back, what was done was done. Over the years it became very obvious those girls felt tremendous guilt over what happened and it derailed their lives.

I said, I could never accept the child as a family member. I never said the child was not a human being. My suggestion was that if this were to happen to a female in my family, that she would put the child up for adoption.
So if, for example, something like that happened to your sister or your daughter and they wanted to keep and love that child, you would not accept that child as a family member?

When sonething happens to a family member it happens to everyone. The interactions and the family dynamic are huge. If you think it is not important I beg to differ with you. I see no reason why a woman violently violated by another human being would want any part of that human being. Rape is a horrendous thing.
I do not understand why you are so bent on me accepting the rapist’s baby. If you are good with this for one of your family members good for you. But that has nothing to do with me or anyone in my family. That is all I have to say in this matter.

I believe in the power of prayer. I was a proud democrat (albeit one that didn’t support abortion, though I did by my votes) and was engaged to my husband. I don’t know why she did it but my sister in law prayed the Rosary for us every day up to the day of our wedding. I had a powerful conversion on all things and especially cooperation in evil via my voting habits. I knew in a moment I could never believe and vote the way I had, ever again for all the evil it caused. I am not a saint but her prayers had a powerful conversion effect. I’ve never been the same, though it has been and continues to be a long journey. Pray the Rosary aimed directly at her heart. She will change.

I can applaud that. But I don’t think it’s my place or even God’s to demand us to sacrifice our lives. Maybe you disagree on the God part, but certainly no human should create an enforceable requirement to kill yourself under any situation.

Yeah. You deny the cross. So you can’t be Catholic. What are you?

It is not my choice if you are killing your husband or wife, or brother or sister, or another family member either. It is still a human being you are killing.

I did not twist any of your words. Your response is a bit over the top, as you referred to “the other situation you speak of is pretty much fictional and almost never occurs”.

The Op spoke of rape and health of the mother; since you did not choose to articulate what that “other situation” is, it appeared, from your writing, that it referred to “health of the mother”.

And that is why I spoke to ectopic pregnancies. Your comment about “making someone less” is bordering on an attack on me - you were the one who wrote vaguely; if someone responds to that, you don’t need to tear into them because you were vague. And your vagueness was why the first word of my post was “If”. You could have politely said what it was you were referring to.
