Why is abortion wrong? Where in the scripture does it say abortion is wrong? [BIBLEDRB][/BIBLEDRB]
Exodus 20:13

Thou shalt not kill.

Oh, and if one is of the mind that life does not begin at conception, then one should take a look a Psalm 139.

13 For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
17 How precious to me are your thoughts,[a] God!
How vast is the sum of them!

Hmm - for starters there are references (not-at-all approving ones, mind) in the Old Testament to soldiers ripping unborn babes out of the wombs of pregnant women. Which is abortion. And wrong.

Secondly ‘Thou shalt not kill’. Jesus in scripture promised the Holy Spirit to guide the Church to the truth in all its teaching, which includes its interpretation of scripture. It has, under the Spirit’s guidance, interpreted that scripture to include abortion and euthanasia. C

In definitive terms, it doesn’t. But in the time of Jesus, Jewish law already precluded abortion in most cases (there was an exception for maternal health and another if a pregnant woman was sentenced to death).

From early Christian writings we can tell it was viewed as a sin since at least the end of the 1st century, and probably earlier.

The living Magisterium sees it as a natural extension of multiple Catholic doctrines (1st Commandment, inalienable rights of the human person, the Two Commandments of Love, etc.) most of which are, themselves, based in Holy Scripture.

Edit: Sorry, I missed the first part of your question. An excellent explanation of the inalienable rights of the human person can be found in Christifideles Laici (see #38):

vatican.va/holy_father/john_paul_ii/apost_exhortations/documents/hf_jp-ii_exh_30121988_christifideles-laici_en.html

Although it is a bit more challenging read, Catholics should all read Evangelium Vitae:

vatican.va/holy_father/john_paul_ii/encyclicals/documents/hf_jp-ii_enc_25031995_evangelium-vitae_en.html

The teachings weren’t new, they were already codified in the Pastoral Constitution of the Church by the Second Vatican Council, but Blessed John Paul does an excellent job of tying the teachings into a seemless, coherent, whole.

In fact, the Bible says even contraception is against God’s plans.

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.” Jeremiah 1:5

Revelation 13 talks of the “Book of Life” written before the foundation of the world, where the names of God’s people have been written (those whose names are not written will worship the First Beast).

So God has us all planned, even before we were conceived. Contraception and abortion contradicts His plans.

Yep. Perfect.

And if I may add also…

*The word of the Lord came to me saying,

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
before you were born I set you apart;”*
Jer 1:5

Quote from One More Soul:

Pharmakos and pharmakeia in the New Testament (Gal. 5: 19-26, Rev. 9:21, Rev. 21:8)

Some scholars (cf Kimberly Hahn in Life-Giving Love 5) hold that these New Testament words represent, in context, a stinging condemnation of contraception and chemical abortion. Usually translated as “sorcerer” and “sorcery,” they refer more specifically to a mixer of potions or to the potions themselves, medicines that were commonly directed at preventing fertility or at achieving abortion.

“Nor did they repent of their murders, their magic potions, their unchastity, or their robberies.” Rev 9:21
“But as for cowards, the unfaithful, the depraved, murderers, the unchaste, sorcerers, idol-worshipers, and deceivers of every sort, their lot is in the burning pool of fire and sulfur, which is the second death.” Rev. 21: 8

The Visitation (Luke 1:38-48)
38*And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
39*And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;
40*And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.
41*And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:
42*And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
43*And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44*For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.
45*And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.
46*And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,
47*And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
48*For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
Here we see that after the Annunciation, the Blessed Virgin Mary has conceived Jesus and has already been the “Mother of my Lord.” She is already considered the mother of an existing person even if she has not yet given birth to Jesus. St. John the Baptist also reacted to the arrival of Jesus and Mary, signifying personhood. The Bible already treats the unborn as persons. It would be an act of murder to kill them even if they are not yet born.

What I was going to say has already been said… so 👍👍👍 to all above posters!!!

Our Lady … Mother of the unborn, Pray for us and protect all unborn children

1867 The catechetical tradition also recalls that there are “sins that cry to heaven”: the blood of Abel,139 [139 Cf. Gen 4:10.] the sin of the Sodomites,140 the cry of the people oppressed in Egypt,141 the cry of the foreigner, the widow, and the orphan,142 injustice to the wage earner.143
1868 Sin is a personal act. Moreover, we have a responsibility for the sins committed by others when we cooperate in them:
**- by participating directly and voluntarily in them;
  • by ordering, advising, praising, or approving them;
  • by not disclosing or not hindering them when we have an obligation to do so;
  • by protecting evil-doers.**
1869 Thus** sin makes men accomplices of one another and causes concupiscence, violence, and injustice to reign among them**. Sins give rise to social situations and institutions that are contrary to the divine goodness. “Structures of sin” are the expression and effect of personal sins. They lead their victims to do evil in their turn. In an analogous sense, they constitute a "social sin."144
Psalm 94
New International Version (NIV)
20 Can a corrupt throne be allied with you—
a throne that brings on misery by its decrees?
21 The wicked band together against the righteous
and condemn the innocent to death.

22 But the Lord has become my fortress,
and my God the rock in whom I take refuge.
23 He will repay them for their sins
and destroy them for their wickedness;
the Lord our God will destroy them.
**Psalm 94
The New American Bible, Revised Edition (NABRE)
**
20
Can** unjust judges** be your allies,
those who create burdens by decree,
[think…Roe vs Wade]
21
Those who conspire against the just
and** condemn the innocent to death**?
22
No, the LORD is my secure height,
my God, my rock of refuge,
23
Who will turn back their evil upon them
and destroy them for their wickedness.

Surely the LORD our God will destroy them!

Is there a quote in the bible that specifies when it’s fine for us to kill another human being? Like when we send people to the electric chair in a very organized and planned way, for example?

Much appreciated, thank you.
Why not start another thread?

We can roll this back even a bit further:

Luke 1:31
Douay-Rheims 1899 American Edition (DRA)
31 Behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and shalt bring forth a son; and thou shalt call his name Jesus.

Conceive > Bring forth

Thus, what is begun with conception is completed upon delivery.

The clearest teaching of the early church on abortion is from the Didache - The Didache is one of the oldest patristic writings of the early church, also called the teachings of the twelve apostles.

newadvent.org/fathers/0714.htm

Chapter 2. The Second Commandment: Gross Sin Forbidden

And the second commandment of the Teaching; You shall not commit murder, you shall not commit adultery, Exodus 20:13-14 you shall not commit pederasty, you shall not commit fornication, you shall not steal, Exodus 20:15 you shall not practice magic, you shall not practice witchcraft, **you shall not murder a child by abortion nor kill that which is begotten. **You shall not covet the things of your neighbour, Exodus 20:17 you shall not forswear yourself, Matthew 5:34 you shall not bear false witness, Exodus 20:16 you shall not speak evil, you shall bear no grudge. You shall not be double-minded nor double-tongued; for to be double-tongued is a snare of death. Your speech shall not be false, nor empty, but fulfilled by deed. You shall not be covetous, nor rapacious, nor a hypocrite, nor evil disposed, nor haughty. You shall not take evil counsel against your neighbour. You shall not hate any man; but some you shall reprove, and concerning some you shall pray, and some you shall love more than your own life.

You can also look at it from a scientific standpoint:
  1. Biologically, when the egg becomes fertilized, it becomes a separate human being with 2 sets of dna from the parents that form a new unique dna sequence, an individual human being, and starts to grow. So, the growing embryo, fetus, or whatever stage it is at, is in fact human. And the fact that it is growing should mean that it is alive. Plants are considered alive without any personhood attributed to them.
  2. Murder is defined as “The killing of one human being by another.” So, if a growing child in the whom is human, and another human (a doctor or what have you) kills the child, it is murder.
Murder is wrong

First, where does the bible say that all we must believe is found in the bible? Doesn’t. Then find in the bible what books are supposed to be in the bible so that we know what to believe. Can’t.

We have the Church that defines faith and morals for us. Saint Paul could not rely on scripture to answer the question on circumcision. He had to set the scriptures aside and go to the Church for an answer (Acts 15). Once the Church decided, it was settled for all time. Done.

I love that wording! 👍👍

When you put these together it is clear abortion is wrong from a Biblical view

Murder is wrong: Gen. 9:6; Matthew 15:19;19:18; Mark 10:19; Luke 18:20; John 8:44; Acts 3:14; and Romans 1:28-29; 13:9.

Both these verses descrive the unborn using personal pronouns. Psalm 51:5 (David says,“Behold,I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me.” and Luke 1:44 (“For behold,when the sound of your greeting reached my ears,the baby leaped in my womb for joy.”

Unborn described by using personal pronouns. Jeremiah 1:5 says,“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, And before you were born I consecrated you; I have appointed you a prophet to the nations.”

Matthew 1:20-21 states, “But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream,saying, ‘Joseph,son of David,do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.’

Jesus was regarded as a child from conception. Matthew 1:20 says,“But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.’ The Angel tells Joseph: “the Child who has been conceived” is “of the Holy Spirit.’

The unborn called baby. Luke 1:41 states,“When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit (1:44).”

The same punishment was applicable to someone who kills or injures the unborn as for one who kills or injured an adult, Exodus 21:22-23 states, “If men struggle with each other and strike a woman with child so that she gives birth prematurely,yet there is no injury, he shall surely be fined as the woman’s husband may demand of him, and he shall pay as the judges decide. But if there is any further injury, then you shall appoint as a penalty life for life . . . .”

Mosaic law viewed the unborn as persons worthy of the same rights as adults.

The unborn are called by God throughout birth. Similarly to Jeremiah 1:5, Isaiah 49:1 says ,“Listen to me, O islands, And pay attention,you peoples from afar, the LORD called me from the womb; from the body of my mother He named me.”

The unborn are known by God as personally as any other person already born. Psalm 139:15-16 says, “My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth; Your eyes have seen my unformed substance; and in Your book were all written;the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there was not one of them.” Describing the prophet Jeremiah, Jeremiah 1:5 says, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,and before you were born I consecrated you; I have appointed you a prophet to the nations
