I don’t get this at all. I just read the Box Office Hit and Golden Compass is the # 1 film in the nation. I was reviewing the film and the book it is based upon. The author is Philipp Pullman who is an atheist and proudly gives an Anti-Catholic and Anti-Christian theme.

Here is the summary of the trilogy. The world is ruled by God, and establish a Magisterium. They are ruthless, and I think the final series have the boy and girl kill God in the end. You can goggle it, but I think the author’s is a pathetic excuse of expressing his hatred for “organized religion” particularly Christians. I can’t believe a country like the US whose majority are indeed Christians decide to watch this wasteless film.

it won’t be #1 for long, and it didn’t make as much as they wanted it to make. I am guessing “I am Legend” will be #1 this weekend and National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets will be #1 next week. It also has the family film “Alvin and the Chipmunks” to compete with.

The next two books are more anti catholic, and the screen writer has been quoted as saying the anti catholic stuff won’t be as watered down. That’s why we must pray that they are not made. If Nichole Kidman realizes the books are anti catholic, maybe she’ll drop out of the film completely.

People, people! They are just fiction! As in not real, pretend, make believe! You act as if people will think it’s actually real. It’s a very well written book, like Harry Potter. Fiction!

It is fiction, but this book will bring into mind the doubt of their faith. The book is extremely Anti-Christian. It is no different than Dan Brown’s Book. If you done your homework of the author, he is completely Anti-Christian, and dislike C.H. Lewis books… and have taken lengths to write books that opposes his…

To be honest, I haven’t been paying much attention to news of the ‘Golden Compass’, but it is currently number 3 in Irish cinemas. It seems to me that if certain films and books really do bring people to question or doubt their faith, then they do, in fact, need to question their faith - why is their faith so easily shaken by a particular film or book? I happen to think that any logical Christian who has held the belief in Christ who died for us and then rose from the dead would not abandon that faith because a book says it’s wrong. If doubt is stirred in ones mind, they should at least have the intelligence to ‘look at both sides of the coin’ - as Catholics, we have nothing to fear if people bring certain aspects of the Faith into question; it happens all the time on this very forum, but after what is often fiery debating the doubters find that the Church provides the most credible answers… I have read 2of Mr Dan Brown’s books - ‘Angels & Demons’ and ‘The Da Vinci Code’. They are, indeed, anti-Catholic books. I thought the content was rubbish, but Brown has a very engaging writing style, in my opinion. However, not once was my faith brought into question while reading these books. Even if it had been, there have been so many documentaries made for TV which have shown Mr Brown’s claims to be utterly false. I’m sure there are many Catholics who are easily swayed by such tripe as Mr Brown presents to us, but I think we really need to give people a bit more credit - if people put any value on their faith, asking questions about it can only enrich it…

I wouldn’t feel comfortable questioning Kidman’s faith. You are of course free to do so. DOes Mel Gibson’s violent roles in movies like “Road Warrior” cause you to question his faith? Do we give “God points” to actors who starred in “The Passion”, assuming they are devout catholics?

Just another flash in the pan skeptic. It’s hard to keep up with them all.

The book will just be debunked like the Da Vinci Code was.

No, it’s not just fiction. I have read all three of the books in question. While the books themselves are just fiction (and quite well-written), the author has said that his books are about killing God and other things which make it VERY clear that he means these books to be anti-Christian. J. K. Rowling never made any such comments about her books, and if anything her books have Christian themes in them.

I do find it quite interesting that there is much less of an uproar about Golden Compass than there was about Harry Potter, considering that the Golden Compass and its sequels ARE actually anti-Christian, and Harry Potter is not.

All I can say is, if the books on which “Golden Compass” was made were anti-Jewish or anti-Muslim, a movie would never have been made. Sad.

Valke2 - I happen to know that James Cavizel, the actor that portrayed Jesus Christ in the movie “The Passion” is a very devout Catholic.

In Kidman’s case, she might be CINO, or she might be one that received very poor Catechism instruction as a child. She was quoted about the Golden Compass she wouldn’t have accepted the role had she known the book was anti-catholic, but someone pointed out, that she should have known what Magesterium is in the Catholic Church.

Well Mel Gibson hasn’t acted in a movie that is anti-Catholic and is aimed at “killing God.” Nicole Kidman can’t say that.

Lethal Weapon 1

Danny Glover: “…sometimes I get the feeling God hates me.”

Mel Gibson: “Hate him back. (It) works for me!”

…or something like that.

If it was anti-Muslim, the writer would have a price tag on his head now.

I do believe this was before he Reverted to Catholicism. Also, I do believe he has redeemed himself by directing, producing, writing and out right funding the Passion of the Christ.

Perhaps people are realising the truth behind the saying, “There is no such thing as bad publicity”, and so are being less public about voicing their opinions? Public outcry might cause other people who would not have otherwise bothered to see the movie, do so out of curiosity.

Much of what C.S. Lewis has written is fiction too, yet his works have had a profound effect on many people.
You also seem to be suggesting that if something is written eloquently, that it is worth reading regardless of how vile and anti christian the content may be? I think the devil would be more than happy to endorse your comments. He has been around long enough to know that few people are going to read something that is poorly written.

blacktiger057, blacktiger057! You act as if fiction has no effect on people. It’s a very spiritually dangerous book, like The Turner Diaries. Fiction!
