Where is the out cry of Christians for success of Golden Compass?

Looks like GC took a nosedive this weekend:

The previous No. 1 movie, New Line Cinema’s fantasy “The Golden Compass,” nose-dived in its second weekend, coming in third with $9 million, down a dismal 65 percent from its less-than-expected $25.8 million debut a week earlier.

“The Golden Compass,” which cost $180 million to produce, has done $90 million so far overseas but has proven a dud domestically with just $41 million.

All I can say is, if the books on which “Golden Compass” was made were anti-Jewish or anti-Muslim, a movie would never have been made. Sad.

you could look at that as reflecting well on us. it means we’re too rational to riot every time a movie or book (or cartoon) comes along that we percieve as slighting our faith.

isn’t that what everyone in the west finds so repulsive about islam, the irrationally disproportionate reaction whenever a controversial remark about the prophet muhammad is made? i’m glad we (including all the people on this forum who are calling for the head of the USCCB reviewer who gave it a generally positive review) don’t exercize that kind of power over secular society. it would make us, and therefore our faith, look irrational.

Do not read the books and do not see the movie. The movie is especially dangerous to adolecents who will be tempted to read the (less watered down) books.

Perhaps people are realising the truth behind the saying, “There is no such thing as bad publicity”, and so are being less public about voicing their opinions? Public outcry might cause other people who would not have otherwise bothered to see the movie, do so out of curiosity.

you can defend this movie as freedom of speech all you want. but i remember “passion of Christ” starting riots all over the world because it portrayed Jews in a bad light. and you cant even name a teddy bear the name mohammed because muslims find it insulting towards their fake prophet. so there are double standards. when you insult Christians and Catholics its not too bad, but dont insult Jews or muslims, you’ll start a war. as seen on the news…especially these days. methinks this “golden compass” episode will seem equivalent to the teddy bear fiasco to anyone who’s not a devout catholic. why do you want to be compared to rioting muslims and those jews who called foul on “the passion”? why do you think that would be good for catholicism?

i’m saying the more outrage we express over this film which is not (as far as i can tell) blatantly anti-catholic like “the da vinci code” the more we would appear to the outside observer like the irrational muslims who called for the caning and/or death of the english grade school teacher in the sudan who named the class teddy bear “muhammad”. that is, acting disproportionately angry about a fairly innocuous fantasy movie.

if we’re perceived to be overreacting in this way, it will confirm to secularists their own belief that all religion, including christianity, is a source of irrationality in the modern world. and that in turn would do a disservice to catholicism by making it harder to convince secularists that believing in christ is a rational, reasonable thing to do.

There is no need to be violent. Every Christian parent should just quietly tell their children why the movie should not be seen.

i disagree. the “da vinci code” took direct aim at jesus, claiming he and mary magdalen had a family and that their descendents were at the center of an evil conspiracy to control the world by whatever means necessary (at least i think that’s what it’s about).

“the golden compass” is a fantasy movie, and like many it has talking animal companions. i don’t think many people in the audience will think through the theological implications of that. more problematically, it also has an evil church running the alternate universe it depicts, but the magisterium barely makes an appearance in the first installment.

Fluff it off if you will. You have the choice. The animal companions are demons–and God dies in the end. The first movie sets up the others to come. My Church (Orthodox) has come out very strong against this demonic film and its books.

Yes. And that is the danger. Too many people are not aware (or do not care) about the worldly poison that is fed to us through media and books. It saddens me to the core.

Your personal opinion is that the Da Vinci Code is more of a travesty. In my opinion it is not. The more we let the media run all over us, the more they will effect the faith of Catholics. There is a reason that Jews and Muslims don’t get barraged by the media on a regular basis, and that is because they won’t put up with it. Therefore, the media effect on the faith of Jews and Muslims is much smaller. Christians for some reason are too insecure to defend their faith. It is sad really. The effect the media has on the average American is substantial. Even if one person loses their faith due to this movie or these books, it’s a travesty. And I’m willing to bet someone has. We should do so much as to at least defend our Faith from the absurd.

it boils down to this:

1. a man says he decided to write some books for the purpose of convincing children there is no God.
2. He writes them.
3. a movie is made of them.

I don’t care if it’s fiction. I don’t care how good the writing is. I don’t even care if he did a poor job of reaching his purpose. If the purpose is to convince kids there is no God WHY would any Christian allow their kids to see it?

And I have not seen less outcry against this than the Harry Potter series. I got just as many emails and phone calls etc about it as harry potter. the difference here is less people SUPPORTING it in my circle.

I saw a new report where they asked if the movies bad sales was because of Christian out cry and the woman answered they thought iut was jsut a lousy movie. ROFL.
