Where is the Public Out cry from all Catholics? When we keep seeing thesethings being said by the Pope.

“God sees to the fruits of our labors,” Pope Francis said during his whirlwind U.S. tour. “And if at times our efforts and works seem to fail and produce no fruit, we need to remember that we are followers of Jesus … and His life, humanly speaking, ended in failure, the failure of the cross.”

I am a little confused on this one. Charisma did a good job creating a controversial title to drag in the readers, but they were kind enough to put a quote from Catholic Answers in the center of the article.

*** Jimmy Akin said…“Pope Francis means that from a superficial, human point of view, Jesus’ death might make it look like he was a failure, but from God’s perspective, this was not so,”
“In Jesus’ day, people expected the Messiah to lead a triumphant rebellion against the Romans, restore political independence to Israel and reign in Jerusalem as a Davidic king. Jesus didn’t do any of those things. … From the perspective of most people of the day, based on their expectations of what the Messiah would do, he looked like a failed political revolutionary.”

But from God’s perspective Christ fulfilled His destiny. ***

I think Jimmy did an excellent job of clearing this up. Even Christ made some remarks that seemed very controversial to many people at that time.

John 6:51-52
I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread, he will live for ever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh.”
The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”

Matthew 19:26

Well, for starters, a lot of people don’t read NPR or MSNBC on-line.

I’m not seeing exactly what there is to complain about, other than the fact that these media outlets quote in post #1 are American liberal ones that are perhaps hoping the Church becomes more morally equivalent… and they probably won’t be publishing the Pope’s comments on right-to-life, marriage and religious freedom. That’s where the real tragedy lies.

Otherwise, outreach to non-Catholics by example has been a cornerstone of the Faith.

Isaiah 53 :
1
Who would believe what we have heard?*

To whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?

2
He grew up like a sapling before him,

like a shoot from the parched earth;

He had no majestic bearing to catch our eye,

no beauty to draw us to him.

3
He was spurned and avoided by men,

a man of suffering, knowing pain,

Like one from whom you turn your face,

spurned, and we held him in no esteem.

4
Yet it was our pain that he bore,

our sufferings he endured.

We thought of him as stricken,

struck down by God* and afflicted,

5
But he was pierced for our sins,

crushed for our iniquity.

He bore the punishment that makes us whole,

by his wounds we were healed.

6
We had all gone astray like sheep,

all following our own way;

But the LORD laid upon him

the guilt of us all.

7
Though harshly treated, he submitted

and did not open his mouth;

Like a lamb led to slaughter

or a sheep silent before shearers,

he did not open his mouth.g

8
Seized and condemned, he was taken away.

Who would have thought any more of his destiny?

For he was cut off from the land of the living,

struck for the sins of his people.

9
He was given a grave among the wicked,

a burial place with evildoers,

Though he had done no wrong,

nor was deceit found in his mouth.

10
But it was the LORD’s will to crush him with pain.

By making his life as a reparation offering,*

he shall see his offspring, shall lengthen his days,

and the LORD’s will shall be accomplished through him.

11
Because of his anguish he shall see the light;

because of his knowledge he shall be content;

My servant, the just one, shall justify the many,

their iniquity he shall bear.

12
Therefore I will give him his portion among the many,

and he shall divide the spoils with the mighty,

Because he surrendered himself to death,

was counted among the transgressors,

Bore the sins of many,

and interceded for the transgressors.

Peace

Ref point 1 I haven’t checked against a full transcript but I would say that if the context was that it was the magic wand that was supposedly able, it speaks for itself, while if God was supposedly able as if with a magic wand (and as if not without it), even though that is almost saying the same, then we ought to not be too attached to an individual personality saying it but see what Scriptures God most reminds us of at the time and follow them, and the Magisterium. Probably a large part of the lesson is for me to get more familiar with where to find full transcripts.

Didn’t St. Paul say something very similar? I’m trying to remember the citation, but my memory is coming up blank.
1 Cor 1
Paradox of the Cross.
18
The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.k
19
For it is written:
“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
and the learning of the learned I will set aside.”l
20
Where is the wise one? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made the wisdom of the world foolish?m
21
  • For since in the wisdom of God the world did not come to know God through wisdom, it was the will of God through the foolishness of the proclamation to save those who have faith.
    22
    For Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom,n
    23
    but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles,o
    24
    but to those who are called, Jews and Greeks alike, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
    25
    For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.
